Personally, I think they should have stuck with the initial "something happened irl while I was recording" idea, instead of this. Maybe they could've even used Gmod chat to communicate, like typing "Hello youtube, my grandson showed me this game" etc to talk to the audience, since there's no way he'd know how to use camera and pose tools. Then, as the videos progress, you could have him start to forget things like what key opens chat, accidentally opening team chat instead, or maybe even console, and just resorting to typing in that instead, with the constant "unknown command" responding back to everything he says, only further adding to the sense of confusion being implied irl, until he's forgotten how to even launch the game, and decides to just communicate via notepad instead. Still wouldn't explain how he'd manage to record and upload the videos, but it'd sure as hell make more sense than randomly inserting split-second creepy images every now and then.

i had an idea for an ARG once that was more about the meta real life happenings of a brother uploading his older brothers old youtube videos post mortem and slowly uncovering his declining mental state and the reasons behind it, but its honestly really hard to make a story like that thats both immersive and engaging. like, theres a lot that goes into it and a lot will get missed before people start realizing its an ARG. like for example, there was supposed to be a part where the older brother makes a gmod video to celebrate his 21st birthday, then laments in the description about being unable to drink due to medication(sorta as a way to subtly narrow down what problems this guy has that need medicating), but all of that would be wasted effort if someone doesnt even bother to read the description. tho with my idea i was kinda backed into a corner where the videos at the start had to be completely normal gmod videos with a believable level of polish for some depressed 20 year old to have made back in roughly 2010 or 2011.

I've not been a fan of the recent trend of these "horror" things about dementia set to the sound of everywhere at the end of time. It's not horror, not even a kind of psychological horror based in the reality of dementia, it's just turning a very real illness into a trend. It's like if one were to make a "horror" series about someone with cancer just getting cancer and getting worse over time. It's all representational, not allegorical. The game "Perfect Vermin" is a good example of an allegorical story based on cancer, but things like these seem much more like just "ooooooh look at this guy forgetting stuuuuuuff ooooOOoooh!" Personally, I find these things to be more disrespectful than anything. Not to imply that something like this is as disrespectful as, say, those Friday Night Funkin folks who made a "dementia AU" or anything, but I feel like, in general, attempting to base one's horror point in reality to the extent that these are is a bit insensitive. Anyway, that's not to say that Gaming Gramps is only that, it looks like there actually IS more stuff going on than what meets the eye. While I was watching this, I thought of something interesting to note: We see Tommy die, definitively. By comparison, we never actually see the same fate happen to the wife. Even moreso, we see that the identity of Tommy keeps getting confused. Usually, he's Male_07. Sometimes, he's male_09. Once, he transformed from male_01, specifically after his drowning scene. The wife, however, hasn't changed once. You'd think that if Tommy is suffering from dementia/memory loss, and even mentions that he's struggling to remember her name, it would be the wife who's face would be getting mixed up. What if "Gaming Gramps" isn't a "gramps" at all? What if the entire channel is being run by the wife as a way to try to preserve her memory of her husband? What if the name of the channel and the main character and the grandpa in the profile photo are all there so that she can try to force herself to remember her husband's name and face after her husband passed away? It's not incredibly likely, sure, but I think it's something to think about. Anyway, an excellent video like always, radhaz! Keep up the good work!
@RadiationHazardYT3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Wolfcl0ck. And great points too. Most interesting one is looking at it from the perspective of the wife. I never thought about that. It just might be like that. Seeing how the profile has Gramps' pfp might allude to the point that the wife has it up in remembrance.
@brookestarr75713 жыл бұрын
I have mental health issues myself, but too be honest. I never find these to be disrespectful. Maybe it’s just me, I just don’t let it affect me, because it doesn’t it. It’s just a horror series based around an old man with dementia. I have OCD, so when ever I saw someone makes jokes or based around a story about the disorder, I really don’t care. I just see that it’s not worth my time. I guess that just me, but if you disagree otherwise, that’s okay! Your opinions are yours.

I actually like this ARG and see a lot of people ragging on it for the Al Bowlly music. I consider that to just be a shaky first step into the type of media this person wants to make and am fully willing to give it a chance since it's different than the other GMod ARGs by virtue of not strictly being gameplay-based. And also not including the dark room from gm_construct (or gm_construct at all). Even gunslingerpro2009 included the dark room. There seems to be more mystery than the whole "dementia lol" angle suggests. I noticed that when Dave (the black guy) talks, he's the only one with balloons that fade in and out smoothly while everyone else's cuts in. There's really something up with him in particular that screams "this isn't just some dementia story".
@alexanderchippel2 жыл бұрын
And you instantly know what this whole thing is about by including Heartbreaks/Burning Memory. What I wouldn't done was include a bunch of music from the late 60's early 70's. these videos have a sort of charm to them, even if they're fake, kinda like showing your grandparent something modern, has the same feeling as watching a child play with something for the first time before falling in love with it.

Things rad failed to mention (in no particular order) : 1) at 2:14 the gman balloon is the first prop Tommy spawns 2) at 5:11 the guy did jump off the building but you can see him in the foreground. Also the characters models constantly change everytime the scene switches maybe hinting that Tommy doesn't remember the faces of the people around him or himself 3) at 7:40 a black version of the gman balloon appears for a split second behind the wife and at 7:48 you can see the same black balloon in the window for a single frame. At the end the wife is replaced by the mossman balloon but coloured black. So this could mean that the gman balloon represents Tommy and the mossman balloon represents his wife 4) at 7:53 if you couldn't tell the text says "I can't remember where I put my keys" 5) at 8:01 Tommy's wife disappears as the scene changes 6) at 12:04 the wife's text is coloured gray instead of being black (not really a big deal but just something to point out) 7) 12:19 isn't it a bit odd that the "friend" just happened to have a bit of meat to pacify the tiger after Tommy fell into the water?

everytime i see a Radiation Hazard notification my day gets 100% better
@@RadiationHazardYT also, i have played a 2 mods called lamda wars, and entropy 0, the frist one is a real time strategy game like civilazitions, but half life themed, the other you play as a metrocop that was got stuck on city 10, a city infested with zombies, nice mods you should give them a try

So, yeah yeah, the Heartaches shit is overused. But I feel like when he says "this sounds different" is because he accidentally picks the Caretaker version than the original

7:50 most people at the early stages of Alzheimer's forget small things like keys and codes this is another detail for him suffering from memory loss Edit: most people with Alzheimer's are there favorite song before they die that's why he says the only song that plays is his favorite

i dont know if its the video quality but in the first part when he is walking just before he stops I can see some weird thing swinging around for 2 seconds before disapearing behind the building

the song that was used in the "tommy's beer adventure" video and the rest after that was a remix of the original heartaches song, combining it with the "its just a burning memory" remix by the caretaker. Not sure if I said it right so here is the video that created it kzbin.info/www/bejne/mIHdYoyhbpZ0aM0

Something you might not of heard is the music having more reverb, at some points, and there are some weird audio effects also.

I was thinking on doing a documentary on Gaming Gramps. Gave up before I even finished the script. I was hoping that someone else would cover this whole channel, and to my surprise..

Theres another good arg in my opinion Gunslinger pro 2009 It's a Garry's mod arg that's all I'm saying

At about 7:50 in the video, in the background for like a split second a black figure appears in the background out of the window.
@anotherhoppou61283 жыл бұрын
Also at 12:26 to 12:27 roughly there's a spit second of an image not sure if that's the skeleton already mentioned because I couldn't pause it at all at the right time

The concept seems nice but the execution is quite strange. Why the hell would a grandpa listen to the song about dementia? Why would there be any dark/mysterious figures in the background? Le epique video btw

Man, this is real ironic, I just watched 2 videos on Gmod ARG's this week like this one the best tho :)

plot twist: he just likes caretaker music and is just trying too make a cute and wholesome story but putting scary things too throw the players off also i personally thing the black figure is either "woaa scary" or just one of the npcs for another shot soon

but there's so many more obscure 1920s/30s songs used in EATEOT that are so much more terrifying for example, George Olsen's "Lullaby of the Leaves" (or on Apple Music "Lullaby of The"), even in the original version, strikes me as unsettling

other than “oooo spooky shadow figure” and the overusage of the split second imagery, its pretty interesting ngl
@thepeeker6933 жыл бұрын
oh boy what a nice and interesting ARG! i wonder what song they will use :) :) :) :)
@P_ckneck3 жыл бұрын
This one was pretty cliche as well, I feel like the creator could've expanded more on that bit when he stopped playing for a few minutes as if something was happening in the background, that could be interesting.
