1:23 As a developer I instantly recognized this one! shadertest is the basis of the default fallback cubemap for reflective/specular materials in basically every Source game. It's found in "materials/ENGINE/defaultcubemap.vtf" Kinda surreal seeing it as an actual skybox.

That wasteland02 skybox is used in almost every HL:Source outdoors level, like in the surface tension cliff

this is why i hate half-life source. not because the bugs, not because the chrome textures, not because of the nuclear explosion in residue processing conveyor belts, the skyboxes just ruin the aesthetic

The only time they didnt use it outdoors, was the level where you launch the rocket, it used sky_day01_09 Update: Its the exact same sky_day01_09, but in game files, its called "night"

FUN FACT!!!!!!! most of beta maps has fog digits in map properties, in c17_01_17 it looks great and fits yellow-ish sky_urb01 Airex has 1 too So yeah, in new megapatch Vitoy will add almost all of them

Skyboxes and the sky in general has always been such a fascination for me, glad to see someone else shares that. Ambience and atmosphere are very important. Great video! 05_older and Spire does feel reminiscent of GoldSource. Minor nitpick of mine but compression or a lack of colour depth really detracts from my enjoyment of skyboxes to be honest. 10/10 texturing on the showcase map.

KZbin's compression really did a number on the darker skyboxes with all the banding and artifacts what a shame, but this was a really interesting video, it's crazy how much info we can infer from just skyboxes and how desperate the HL2 community is for any crumb of HL2 history or trivia that we can even spend all day looking at skyboxes lol I love it.

Hunt down the Skyboxman. On a serious note tho Skyboxes are very good at setting tones for the maps. Not just in HL2 but in many third party mods people add custom skyboxes to the maps and some can be really beautiful while some can just be some shades of grey.

I think I should include that you forgot to mention the recently leaked "wastelands001" texture, which was used sparingly in the WC mappack but prevalent in a number of concept arts (like that well-known depiction of the Wastelands with the Airex in the background.)

Apparently, one guy Chief Smokey managed to recreate some of the missing beta skyboxes, sky_urb01 included. A package with those can be downloaded from HL2 Beta forums (Chief Smokey's lost skyboxes remakes). Sky_urb01 looks very climatic and reminds me of "city" skybox from GoldSrc, with similiar brownish palette of colors.

I think I've seen the shadertest skybox texture in Portal 2, like when after restarting the game, you test play one of your custom levels without rebuilding it, and textures with cubemaps revert to a default cubemap that uses the shadertest skybox texture.

One thing that was never finished in HL2 Beta were the randomly generated rocks/tuft grasses, just like the 2D grass you would get on displacements. All of them are either errors or missing textures, I make maps for GMod so I was really disappointed when I learned that. I pitched a fix for it on Github in hopes that it may be fixed someday, rip Edit: The dev on GMod completely fixed everything wrong with it!
