They harassed Oppen and Olson both for support for communism while USSR was allied with the US during WWII. In Olson’s case, while he was working for the OWI. The FBI continued to monitor him into the 50s and “visited” him at Black Mountain College to let him know that.

(c. 1:24:00) As alluded to by Rockhill earlier in this talk, the UK publisher of the Frances Stonor Saunders book had given it the title 'Who Paid the Piper?,' while its eventual US publisher gave it the simpler but still accurate title, 'The Cultural Cold War.' Btw, there was an earlier book I think would also be of interest, as it is a memoir by a participant in the Australian affiliate of the Congress for Cultural Freedom. His name is Peter Coleman, and the book is called, 'The Liberal Conspiracy' (1985).

(3:39) Here he's referring to the Congress for Cultural Freedom* -- which targeted intellectuals and the arts overseas -- and Operation Mockingbird -- which targeted the media within the U.S. -- both launched in 1952. *(Edit:) As Rockhill goes into at 15:47 -- my understanding is that it was exposed in 'Ramparts' magazine in February 1967 (though here he gives the date as '66).
