Your model, your rules. Peace of mind and safety when operating the model is paramount and I think even the haters of the keel would agree that this beauty sinking would be even worse. Hi Rob. I am sure that I have read somewhere that the removable steps were usually removed when in port. This gave better access to the ships holds when cranes were bringing in baggage nets and stores. Crashing one of those into the steps rails would have been pretty severe. The single set of steps in front of the bridge (well deck) would also be removed and the gate closed to discourage passengers entering a potentially dangerous working area. However, the Olympic promotional film shows these in place whilst stores are being brought aboard but it is a posed shot allowing ladies in huge hats to descend rather awkwardly to the well deck, which would not have normally been allowed! The keel ballast is very effective, so good job! Seeing the model disappearing in the boating lake may look authentic but not really what you want to happen! Perhaps a little colour camouflage if it is still too visible on a sunny day but either way the keel is fairly mandatory for your health!! Aaaaah maybe this is why I’m finding pictures that show steps installed during crossings. The steps are in now so we are progressing. I have taken your thought and painted the keel too now, in a fairly dull matt green, I think it should be relatively hard to see unless the model is right in the shallows! The more a boat is stable to the roll, the more the rolling movements will be rapid and brutal. This is not always desirable in certain conditions as it can sometimes cause induced roll From a comfort point of view... a slow roll is desirable and as a sailor I have always preferred to sail boats with a slow roll frequency Of course for those who are not used to sailing .. they always wonder if the boat will right itself 😀 BTW your patience and sense of detail given to this model makes it a magnificent model Kudos

Yes I can see that actually, it’s essentially a pendulum isn’t it. As my main concern here is capsize prevention, rather than passenger comfort etc I think I’m good! As you say a slow roll is good for a ship with comfort in mind, though didn’t this become a bit too much of a problem on the Queen Mary?

Not to polish the brass too much here, but she looks absolutely beautiful. Superb work. Considering this model will likely be operated at very low speed (not only for accuracy but also for the safety of the vessel) the aquadynamics of the keel shouldn't create much in the way of resistance. The only thing I've found is that the keel must be positioned as near perfectly as possible, or it can make the ship list heavy to one side, or cause it to cruise in a slight curve (due to the keel creating a forward rudder effect). Two of the Titanic's 3 screws ran in the same direction, while one turned opposing, in heavier RC vessels this doesn't pose much of a problem, but it may be necessary to program the board to increase power/speed to the single screw (that runs opposite the other two) by .10 to .15 percent. I'm sure you have all of that figured and calculated, but I'm an engineer. She is going to be so spectacular cruising along, such incredible effort and attention to detail.

Hi there, thank you for the comment! As you say the resistance through the water shouldn’t be too bad. I’ve added the keel at the centre of mass (or as close as I could get it). There’s a little more weight to add so I will pop little bits of lead about the hull until we get a good level! WRT to the rudder effect this is something I’d vaguely thought of, but I haven’t got round to testing, I think this may well be something I learn from practical tests.

The false keel is a great idea for stabilising the boat, just might want to think of the aquadynamics of it, I had a model boat when I was little which had a false keel, but the weighted bit was shaped like a bullet, but it worked fine as a counter weight for stability. Good work btw, looking forward to the next video as always

Good video once again, as for the keel it's your choice as you said with the amount of time and money you've but into the model it's your duty to protect it the best way you can, remember ban anyone putting ice cubes in water next time you float the model.

Keel and ballast are splendid and practical additions. Is keel removable for display? If not, no problem, a little cribbing will hide it nicely.

Hi there, yes the keel is removable. I should have shown this in the episode so will do next time, but there is a M8 bar that runs through it which connects to a nut in the ship. The top of the keel has a soft rubber section so it can make a waterproof seal onto the hull

Could the Keel be doable in the length and the hight cut in have. My thoughts are the longer the keel the more water needs to be moved around(more drag for listing). It also brings the weight closer to the hall of the ship. Idk if that makes a difference bit worth a try.

Hi there, I’m certainly going to be redesigning the keel slightly to make it a touch more elegant and generally just do a bit more maths around it. It should be a little bit shorter, but I’m not too worried about the drag it causes. It won’t be insignificant for sure, but it’s a good trade off. A far bigger concern is if it snags on something!

Looking great Robbie. This might be a crazy, crazy idea and of course budget and time considerations to be thought of, but given the delicate nature and extra weight of the superstructure have you given any thought to building a stock version of the kit superstructure to plonk on when out on the lake? The good thing about your modular connections is that it should be easy enough to swap them out. This way if the worst came to the worst and the keel failed or an inappropriately thrown stone or a raft of aggressive ducks decide to attack you have far less to worry about. 🙂 As you would be building more functional than aesthetic it shouldn't take anywhere near as long to build, but no getting around even an unbuilt ebay kit is going to be a couple of hundred pounds. I also know you'll want it out on the lake in it's full glory too - just a balancing act of risk vs reward and how long it might take to sort out the interiors/electrics and breakables if something happened.

Funnily enough, I had considered that very early on in the build. And that would certainly solve the issue of the heavy superstructure. As you say it’s a balancing act of risk and reward. I think on balance as I’m not going to sail this all that much I should be ok without. I am tempted to make another Titanic (or possibly Olympic / Britannic) with far less detail, as a more practical RC model in the future but we shall see! These things always take longer than you plan 😅

I may be wrong but I don't think there were ladders up to the poop deck from the aft well deck. There were stairs by the steering gear that led up and out by the docking bridge, so they had this route up in case the stairs were out of action.

I confess this was the area I was least sure about. I have used Vasilije Ristovic’s renderings (which show a ladder under the stairs) as a guide for now. But I’m still 50/50 as to whether a ladder was there or not. I’ll have a look on titanic H&G too and see if I can find anything there. Could you do me a favour and if you find conclusive evidence either way let me know?

I can see the advantage of the keel, but my only concern is when it's in the boating pond. Most boating ponds I've seen you can only see what's under the water for the first few feet. I would worry it could snag on something hidden under surface of the water. I hope you don't think I am being negative, it's just something to bear in mind.

I don’t think you’re being negative, it’s a fair point and worth considering! For the most part the pond I sail in is relatively deep (deep enough for rowing boats to go around), and they have a greater draft than my model. But it’s certainly worth being mindful of this, especially nearer the banks. I will be sailing at a low speed so any collision will be relatively low impact. I will probs use my sub to scout the area first!

I have a big list of things that need doing at the end, finishing touches sort of things. So this is on the list.

When you do set sail on the open water if the worst case scenario happens and she sinks on her maiden voyage than at least you will still have a better chance of recovering the ship to sail it again. 😉 It would be really devastating to put the same amount of time and detailing into a radio control aircraft only to watch it crash and burn on its maiden flight!🤦🏼‍♂️

Here's me thinking for approx 77 videos now that your glue spreader was an antique modelers tool 😄 I don't think the keel detracts from the model, I do have little to no knowledge of such things so this may sound obvious; couldn't you place the weight of the keel inside the hull, or is the distance between the hull and keel weight a factor in its stability? Also, how did you attach the keel? Is it permanent or removable? I suppose strong enough magnets to attach/detach the keel would throw the whole weight/balance off?

Ah yes it occurs to me I didn’t actually go into the workings of the keel. I’ll do that in the next episode, but essentially it’s a M8 threaded bar with a nut inlaid into the hill above! The distance between the keel and weight does make a difference to stability so the lower down the better. The keel shown here is the first I made, and there was very little science involved. It’s just a big weight on a stick. I’ve done a few more calcs now and think I can reduce the height a bit, and slightly improve the design in other areas too!

Re salt vs. fresh: I have heard of overloaded fishing boats sinking when entering the Fraser River from The Strait of Georgia here in British Columbia because of this effect.

Hey Robbie, I'm building an RC Titanic like yourself and some time ago I remember in a video you said that you were having concerns about superstructure weight. Because of this I decided I was not going to sacrifice stability for the sake of detail given that I describe it as a '20ft model'. I am only adding critical KA parts (for example, I've omitted the brass plating for the bulwarks on the boat deck and detail in a number of rooms like the 1st class smoking room, no grand staircase detail etc). With that in mind, had you not added as much detail in the superstructure, would you still be concerned enough to make the keel? Secondly, do you have any concerns with the keel and lead weight catching on underwater obstructions?

Hi there, I think I’d have been far less worried had I added less weight up top, for a few reasons. Firstly the model is just a lot more delicate so I’m more concerned about how long it would take me to replace it if something went wrong! But yes with a little less weight I’d be far less worried about needing a keel. WRT it snagging, yeah I think this is certainly the biggest new risk I’ve introduced. The lake i sail in is quite deep and relatively free from underwater obstructions, (rowing boats with a bigger draft than my model sail there), but a bit of common sense will go a long way too.
