Radio doesn't work after battery disconnect

After changing your car battery the radio will not work. You did it the wrong way. So now you need to reprogram the radio, and you don't want to break your bank doing it. Here's how to get those tunes going again for free.

Just sat for an hour watching video's on how to get the code back into my Nissan X trail 2008 after changing the battery. logged onto your video went outside and stuck the key into the ignition and hey presto it all worked. I normally have the key in my pocket and if you switch the radio on it won't work. It does now. You are truly a down to earth guy.Hope you enjoy life into your nineties you deserve a long life. @oldman4595 There might be a fuse inside the radio too. And if the radio is asking for a code you should look for that also. If it's an after market radio you might end up having to check everything. But you're on the right track...check the wires real good.

Great video! Thank you for taking the time to pass your knowledge on to us! I have a 2008 Chrysler 300c and had to replace the battery in my car. I ADDED a Coastal MyGig LockPick to my radio a few years ago (it lets you add cameras to your 8" radio screen, and also lets you view video on the console screen while driving, etc).After battery replacement, the radio would not work, and I had to disconnect the wiring harness from the LockPick in order to reset the radio. Once the harness was reconnected to the LockPick the radio started working again. Hopefully, this might help someone else out who has the same setup as I do. :( a 2009 Kia Sportage does not have an auxiliary setting in the ignition. The key does not turn backwards but if you just move it forward 1 notch it's the same thing I think. The bad news is that did not work for me I'm glad it did for others though. I also tried the eject button on the radio and that was no go either. back to the drawing board

I was asked to write this technique down....so here it is. Put the ignition key in. Turn it backwords. Not forward like you would to start the car. While it's turned backwards towards you, which is the accessory mode, turn on your radio. The radio should come on. You have reset the radio. Do the same thing for your CD player. Once all that is done you are good to go. You won't have to do this again unless you disconnect your battery again. Good luck.

You should be able to check your fuses without disconnecting the battery. Did you end up talking to the parts store about this?

You don't have to disconnect the battery to check the fuses. And difinetly don't pay $2k for a new radio. Explain the "thump" thing to me. Are you saying it makes a thump sound from the speakers? I have more questions, but let's start with the fuses first.

Save yourself time and a lot of money…try unhooking negative (Black) battery cable for a couple minutes. Read on. I’ve got a 2009 and a 2010 Fusion I installed dash cams in about 2 months ago. I’ve learned that if they are not started in 3 days, it will drain battery. I have since installed hardwire kits to eliminate this issue but, both of them exhibited no radio after jump start. I checked fuses. The audio fuse showed bad with test light but when I removed it, fuse was good to the sight. So I tested continuity with a meter and it was good. Both cars have over 240,000 miles and I didn’t see spending big bucks for a radio as that was all it appears to be affecting. I read where a couple people removed and unhooked radio and it started working again. Also read where the three audio fuses were removed and reinstalled and radio started working again. So, I figured both scenarios eliminated power to system again and the easiest way to do it was unhook battery.

Sounds crazy. You lost the radio by disconnecting it's power and then got it working again by disconnecting the power again? Maybe one of the things you checked out while trying to find the problem didn't have or lost it's contact when you first disconnected power, then regained it's continuity when you tested it.

It’s a common problem. Several videos on the problem and quite a few threads with same issues. I have 2 fusions both had same issues. Unhooking the battery remedied the problem with both of them.

Just tried this on my Mazda B3000 with a Pioneer FH-S501BT system.. It didnt work but I did manage to fix it, turned the truck off, then press and held the power button, then turned the truck on while holding the power button and boom it worked.. Hope this helps someone down the line.

This method used to work on my 2004 Nissan quest, but it doesn’t now. For the past year, the radio would go in and out and make a really loud noise on the speakers, and restarting the car and letting it sit for sometimes up to a couple minutes would fix the issue. Starting with putting it in the accessory position. Now that doesn’t work at all, and my car has been in the shop three times in the past six months, and lastly having the battery replaced altogether. I was told by the garage I am missing a tie down, knowing I had one before I’m sure it was stolen as the shop has now become some shady folks, however I’m not sure that has anything to do with it. The radio/CD didn’t go out FOR GOOD for probably a couple months after the battery was replaced, so I guess my question is if it was the battery connection, or not being hooked up to a power source upon changing the battery, is it possible that it could still be the battery connection even though the radio didn’t stop working immediately after changing the battery? Is it possible maybe just a connection got loose after sometime? I don’t really know what to look for when I look at the battery. By the way, the radio/CD player was about five years old, I bought a brand new one when I got my van. Brand new, not refurbished from the factory. Not under warranty anymore, and I don’t have $500 to replace it. With 7 kids, and being a single mom, I practically live in my van, and my kids and I are going crazy with nothing to listen to in the car! Please help!! 😫🙏

Wow 7 kids! Yeah it sounds like a bad connection somewhere and that might have caused a fuse to finally blow. The connection could be right at the radio itself. Whoever installed your new one might have left a connection loose. It could also be at the battery. Ask someone to help you. If all the connections are good check the fuses also. Keep in mind that some radios have fuses on the power line to the radio, not just in the fuse box. A lot of after market equipment is like that. Good luck.

There's a cell phone transceiver in your trunk sitting next to your suspension unit...check the wiring. Try disconnecting it and see what happens. See it your radio works after that. If it does you can leave that disconnected if you don't use the phone that came with the car. Look for lose and shorted out wires to it also.

I found out how to do it... Just push the two buttons at the same time for 12 seconds... And the radio will reboot..... Push the volume knob and radio Turner knob at the same time 10-12 sec...

Ok...push the start button one time with your foot off the brake. Make sure your foot is not on the brake. This will put your car in accessory mode. Then turn on your radio like you normally would. It should come on. If your battery dies again or you disconnect it you'll have to do this again.

It should work the same way, except you put the car into accesory by pushing the starter button without having your foot on the brake peddle. That should put your car into accesory, then try turning on your radio like you normally would. Good luck. And please let me know if this works for you!

Good video. My problem is I have an older Kenwood the kind that the little display pops off when you need to bring it in the house or whatever, but when my battery is disconnected it takes 2 to 3 days sometimes a whole week before my stereo will start working again. It depends on the car you have. Just put whatever you got into accessory mode. With old cars it's usually one click backwards (counter clockwise). Newer cars can be one click backwards or one click forward. Depends on the car. Brand new push button ignition...push the start button one time with your foot off the brake. That will put you into accessory mode.

For those cars there's another way of doing it. You turn the key forward one click without having your foot on the brake. That will turn on the accessory mode. Then turn on the radio. Try that.

If it's going to work it should work in the accessory mode. Have you checked the radio fuse? Your car might have an amplifier connected to your sound system also... look for that fuse and check it.

Check your fuses. Some cars use amplifiers with the radio. They're separate units and use separate fuses.

Are you able to control the fan speeds? If not it might be the temperature card. Does the AC only run on high and not shut off? It could be a shuck relay. Or if you can't find the problem you could remove the AC fuse. It wouldn't work at all then but you would have the battery good for you until you get someone to look at out.

@@floydstreet162 you have a lot of things going on there. Some of it requires testing with testing equipment and knowing how to do that. I'm not sure I can explain to you how to do all of it. If I were there I would pull the AC fuse then pull the relay and test the relay with a volt meter. That would be my first step. And because you said there's no clock, that's another problem. Is the clock part of the radio or just part of the dash?

The problem with me is that I have a push button start car...the remote key only opens front door if the key fab battery dies..it doesnt start the car...so im shit out of luck....dealership here i come..money i will spend.

I had to do some work to my car and the battery died as I waited for the new part; long story short I got my new part in there and needed a jump. I called the Buildings and grounds and they had a guy come with a battery jumper. As I filling out the paperwork he hooked up to the battery, says it's ready so I go turn the key and we got Sparks from the battery; this fuckin idiot had the black on red and red on black?!?! That coulve destroyed countless other things. Before then even when my battery couldn't start the car it had enough juice for lights and the radio.

Yup...he probably fried a lot of circuits. Lucky he didn't blow the top of the battery off! I seen that happen. Good luck.

My radio is Panasonic strada, so when I put he keys in the ignition on Acc the radio turned on automatically , it has no off or on button it rely on the ignition , so it's abit tough , The screen of the radio is just keeping on turning on and off, after I removed the battery

@@keneliokamyata9373 I found this: Hold the track button to the right for 10 sec. and it will auto enter it self, get the code. Then go to the ID code menu and enter a new one. I think there's a video also. I'll look for it then send you the link.

You could try to turn it off by pushing the 0 button. Also there's a site called FIXYA where you can ask how to fix your issue. Let me know if you still need me after trying those things. I'll try to help.

Did they disconnect the battery for that? Anyway give it a try. If they disconnected the battery this should work for you. Try it.

Put the ignition key on accessory then turn the radio on. Don't start the car. Do this first, then you can start the car afterwards. You should only have to do this once unless you battery is disconected again.

This just happened to me as I left my car to go into Taco Bell to get food once I came out and turned my car back on the radio and navigation worked but there was absolutely no sound or anything. ... do the same thing you would if you were going to start the engine except you don't put your foot on the brake peddle. You push the start button with your foot off the brake. This will put your car into accessory mode. Then turn on your radio. It should come on. You're all set after that...just do the same thing you always did after that. No special sequence.

You can try doing what I said to in my post. But it sounds like you need to find out what's going on with your battery. Could be a bad battery, or alternator. Marybe a few other things too. If you keep on getting jumps cause your battery keeps dying you'll keep on having the radio problem.

Check your fuses. You may have a blown fuse. If you didn't lose power to the car or disconect the battery, and your radio stopped working, it could be just a blown fuse.

You probably got something else going on. Check your fuses. You might have a blown amp fuse. Also if it's an after market radio it might actually need a code, but it should be asking you for that if that's the case.
