Holy shit this explains so much of how that specific effect is made! It doesn't even have to be radio, can be another track/song you like or made, mixes you prepare for it! This is so good!

One of the best tools that I found for getting strange sounds to use this method on is internet shortwave radio. You'd be amazed at some of the strange sounds that you can dial in. There's dial up-modem type sounds, strange bursts of static, numbers stations, people talking about random stuff, as well as music stations from other countries. And the internet shortwave radios that are out there that you can access through your browser also 99% of the time have a "Record" button somewhere in there so you can just record what you want and download the file.

Wow! Super neat trick! Another fun one is to use things like Radio/noise as the gate trigger for pads/drones to give the 'broken/glitchy signal wire' effect. Super addicted to your channel now, keep the content coming!! Been SP junkie since 88 and love to hear your take on things!

Cool idea! I recently got an Akai MPC One, and I'm trying to figure out how to do this on there, but the gate settings are not obvious. I'll keep plucking away at it, and hope it's possible! If not, that's fine. I am really enjoying this little box as it is, and trying to take in little bits of your advice while I work on some songs. It's really nice to be making electronic music again, and the workflow and capabilities of this thing blow my previous gear out of the water!

That's cool I recorded a bunch of radio stations on my phone. But I would record the station frequency that was right before or right after. So the radio recording would have an overlay of static noise dubbed into the music. But I never thought of triggering the recording with drums... That really cool. I don't use protools though, I use propeller heads reason. So I'm not sure if I can do something similar, I'd have to check... But they're all single recordings just me switching from one radio frequency to another and recording the noise. I might try it out... See what I can do.

Hey Ken, this is by far one of my favorite production technique videos on youtube. Would you consider doing more videos on sound design and experimenting in the studio? "Weird stuff that sounds unexpectedly cool" is a big theme around my studio, especially when working with old hardware, so I'd be curious to hear more of your experiences along those lines. Listening to the albums you worked on in the 90s is actually what inspired me to choose sound design and engineering as a main career, so these little gems of wisdom are a real treat.

This is great Ken, I'm a long time SP fan. To be honest they were the reason I started writing music. I studied the credits and always remembered who was producing and mixing so when I saw you had a channel I was elated. CBC and LG73 radio samples never sounded to good in the 90's Thank you for sharing this technique as I always kinda wondered what was up with that randomness Also surprised you didn't just use an old 4track multi tracker to drive loops into the gate but this is great info right here

That’s a great idea, imagine the random results from playing old demos, etc. Plus you’d have pitch control...and you could even play the tapes backwards haha, I’m ALL IN!!! Oh boy, I'm not a hoarder BUT I do have a couple boxes full of old cassettes and VHS tapes that I recorded from radio and TV in the 80's and 90's that would be PERFECT for this technique. Question: is it worth going to the trouble to "tune" any of it so it's in key with the song?
