You could call him a vigilante. He has a moral compass, even if it's a bit off kilter. The people he killed were a "waste of skin". Considering the time and place there may have been some that even thought of him as a hero. He was in Louisiana in the 20s and 30s during the Depression and the time of Jim Crow laws. I could see him going after lynch mobs, the KKK, etc.
