God, how I miss sitting in the dark, listening to those humungous old reel-to-reel tape recorders with the dials that glowed like the lights on the bridge of the Enterprise ... the quality of the sound and the motion of the reels was positively hypnotic ... relaxing on the sofa with a drink and a smoke, feet up on the coffee table, watching a lava lamp ... those WERE the days!

I remember sitting up till near midnight with wire coat hangers and all sorts of stuff trying to get a decent reception here in Northern Ireland 69-74, wouldn't have changed it for the world, especially remember the "penpal" section even wrote for a few years to a girl from Suomi or as most people know it Finland, we are spoiled now, great memories.

Radio Luxemburg had a such a strong signal that you could pick it up far behind the Iron Curtain but sometimes it was jammed. It has always baffled me why. I used to hate the wavy signal but now I like it. It sounds so real.
@ketrin-fz8be Жыл бұрын
I seem to recall reading that the jamming was actually a harmonic from the Russians' attempt to jam Radio Liberty, which was on half of Luxembourg's frequency... so, 416 metres, I guess?

My god, how I love to hear this. Started listening to RadioLux in late '66- early '67. I was four years old...never been the same again. Thank god my parents thought it was a great way to put their son 'to sleep with this on the transistor radio...few years later, they may have regretted it, as I'd become a young music maniac and later turning into a freaked out record collector, blowing the walls out all evening long after school with rockin' vinyl on the stereo! They were brave and kind folks.

I remember the Tony Prince, Benny Brown, Bob Stewart and the others dj's voices. The advertising of " Aqua Manda, Cinzano Bianco, Peter Stuyvesant, Sunsilk " and the fabulous jingles. RTL used 208m/1439 kHz for multilingual broadcasts, notably German and English. Flemish programs where heard here on 6090 kHz/ 49 mb SW, French programs on 234 kHz LW and 15350 kHz SW. English px relayed night time on 6090 kHz. RTL used directional antenna on 208m, which made reception a tricky in Finland. Sankt Peterburg (Leningrad) used this frequency more or less sporadically. A strong Arabic station appeared in the 1980´s. I started listening in 1959, Johansson vs Patterson champion boxing.

In 1976, Radio Luxembourg retrofitted three triangular passive reflector masts to the two 1/4 wave 1440 kHz MW omnidirectional antennæ to focus the night-time signal of 1200 kW over the UK and focus the daytime signal of 600 kW over Germany. The single reflector for the UK aerial was slightly angled to give a vertical take off skip angle 324 degrees West North West towards the UK effectively skipping Luxembourg City aiming all of the signal at the United Kingdom with attenuation in other directions. The two reflectors for the German aerial were arranged at the back of the second omnidirectional antennæ to form an isoceles triangle 45 degrees East South East towards Germany utilizing 600 kW for the daytime programmes in German. Around 18.00h UK / 19.00h CET, 1440 kHz would be switched to the UK night antennæ and power increased for the Radio Luxembourg International programme with Mike Verdrengh, Qui Italia! for 15 minutes of Italian news and current affairs, the German religious programmes at 18.45 UK / 19.45 CET and the English Service at 19.00 UK / 20.00 CET.

208! Fucking Great! I listened to this when i was a child alone in my room when i should be asleep. What i remember most was the kinda "singing" sound of the radio, like a sinus wave, up and down. Gave a special feel to it. Side effect was i learned English at a young age just by listening to the great lowwwww voices of the dj`s. Great time!

That "singing sound " was probably static caused by another radio station far away broadcasting on the same frequency or adjacent to it, sorry to say that the original 208 transmister in Luxembourg is no more, I heard on the Internet that has been demolished to make way for a refugee camp

3 X 10**8/208 would be about 1443 Khz on the USA dials I'm used to. I've noticed that radios from Europe are sometimes marked in meters, sometimes in Khz and sometimes both; it must have been confusing. Anyway, thanks for this glimpse into the past; I was a little surprised to have recognized every song.

Even the commercials seemed really listenable-to then with these gentlemen of the air - compared to 'in the face' stuff these days . Luxy WAS the station then - now we have quantity but no quality - we have now wallpaper radio , but a lousy pattern! Biggest mistake Radio Luxembourg made was ending English on 208 meters.
@anthonyperkins75566 жыл бұрын
Problem is, trying to sell advertising airtime to advertisers on a poor fading medium wave signal was a problem that dogged Radio Luxembourg's image. In August 1990 RTL launched Radio Luxembourg on the Astra 1A satellite via channel 13 7.38 / 7.56 Mhz Wegener 🐼 1 in stereo initially to Scandinavia CATV systems as RTL International but royalties and cable carriage fees made the whole thing unviable so they turned it into a 24h Radio Luxembourg to serve the whole of Europe and the United Kingdom, it was broadcast all day on satellite and would hook up with 1440 kHz nightly from 7pm UK / 8pm CET, and from midnight UK / 1am CET to closedown at 3am UK / 4am CET on 1440 kHz it would be joined by 49.26 metres Shortwave at 500 kW omnidirectional power giving worldwide reception plus 89.0 93.3 and 97.0 FM Stereo to the Grand Duchy and surrounding areas At the end of 1991 they closed down 1440 kHz MW at 3am UK / 4am CET on 30th December 1991 and switched SW frequency to 15350 kHz beamed to North America at 50 kW directional power and carried on via Astra 1A channel 13 to Europe and the UK in stereo 7 38/7.56 MHz. In September of 1992 CLT announced it would closedown the English Service on 30th December 1992 because nobody knew how many people were listening via Astra 1A on their satellite systems and the take-up via CATV systems and FM rebroadcasters through a broadcast trade magazine was miniscule to make it worthwhile. 30th December 1992 the English Service closed for the final time at midnight UK / 1am CET on Astra Satelite / 15350 kHz and 1440 kHz leaving nothing but memories. A sad end to a brilliant radio station RIP Radio Luxembourg 1933-1992.

One thing thats always turned me off about British pop/rock radio is the obsession with the inane `personality` DJ, who loves his own voice, talks incessantly about nothing, constantly interrupts songs and plays constant stupid jingles. Even as a kid the only thing that was important to me was the music. Still is. Lucky I was a rock, not a pop kid! Unfortunately records used to cost more than radio batteries!
