Having been retired for many, many years I was reminded just how long by your reference to "old-fashioned" flying. My commercial flying career ended just as the modern FMC was entering (reliable) service. ADF and VOR navigation could be a tiring but wonderful way to fly.

I actually prefer using VOR stations, because it gives you something to do - versus "doing what the computer tells you" :)

Thanks for this! I believe this is the same plane used for the adventures segment. NOTE: those four holes in the leading edge of the wing are vents for front and rear air intake for the occupants. If you look VERY closely, you will see a panel (4 rivets) which is rather washed out between the taxi / landing lights and the vent. The stall horn is there.

This is a great refresher course for me. It is not always easy to use all the terminology that a ppl course would use. Various fs tutors say for example 'Runway twenty one' when designators are stated as eg 'Runway two one' I'm sure there are many future pilots using the online video tutorials so where possible I think trying to get this stuff right will save them re-learning later. I think you do a great job and I enjoy the ride! Just one thing more, you refer to the compass o the instrument panel. The compass is fitted on the top centre all on its own. What you describe as the compass is a gyroscopic direction indicator which must be realigned with the magnetic compass regularly as precession alters the accuracy giving rise to nav errors. Just sayin'😎 Blue side up!👍

As Usual another excellent tutorial. An expensive flight though as the 172 appears to have been on full rich for the duration of the flight.

Great job, as usual, Jonathan, and I'm learning so much from your beginner series. I have a question though about the ILS frequency. It is the same frequency for landing either direction on the runway. You changed to runway 5 but how did the VOR instrument know that? It's responding to the frequency you set, but that would be the same frequency if you were approaching from your original direction.
@tomjanzen92782 жыл бұрын
Never mind. Just watched it again. Stupid question - sorry. You changed the direction on the CDI to fly to the ILS for runway 5.

How does the plane know to head to or from the VOR? You put 85 on the OBS and the autopilot flies TO BPK @ 85, then you dial in 123 and it flies FROM BPK @ 123? How does it decide TO or FROM?
@jonbeckett2 жыл бұрын
The aircraft knows the direction it is pointing, versus the direction of the VOR.

If you can't hear the Morse code in Xplane, how do you know you are within range of the chosen VOR station?
@jonbeckett6 ай бұрын
The needles and "from/to" indicator won't wake up without a signal.
@pfv34626 ай бұрын
@@jonbeckett Yes, I now realize that I need to be within range of these channels. So now I use the (from indicator) of the runway where I'm taking off, and the (to indicator) of the runway when I'm near the beacon! I often practice the same flight to get familiar with the environment and how it improves! Since I cannot install MSFS 2020 due to our slow internet, I have to do everything in X plane. thanks 👍

It’s a gorgeous sim isn’t it? Although I’ve had a number of iterations of MSFS over the years, I switched to X-Plane at X-Plane 10. I’ve just had to choose again and after much soul searching, I ended up upgrading to X-Plane 12. Pretty sure I made a good choice, but vids like this one torture my inner graphics whore, that’s for sure. :)

Well, I must be the worst pilot ever. Because I’ve tried this two or three times now in XP12 and I get to the vicinity of Southend ok, but then the auto pilot “seems” to think about the ils approach, but then takes me out to sea. :(
