I purchased the Sangean version of this radio back in the late 1990’s. ATS-818. It was my first shortwave radio. Thanks for the band scan, especially with the loop.

There are lots of articles on the internet about replacing certain parts on these that are subject to damage from static..not a difficult repair.

Hej Todderbert thanks for the bandscan and the video RadioShack DX-390 very nice radio and would love to have a RadioShack radio in my radio collection so will look around a bit for RadioShack radios.I also like a lot Vintage 1960's General Electric AM/FM portable radios a GE radio model I am very fond of is P977E a very stylish radio and with silver look love it. Todderbert it would be nice to see a bandscan with your GE radio again take care and have nice weekend.

I purchased this model new at Radio Shack back in the early 90s. Mine is branded “Realistic”, and where yours has the model “DX-390” printed, mine has “Voice of the World”, they are otherwise identical. I did experience a problem with the clock and memory being lost, even though the memory batteries 3 AAA cells were good. I discovered that an internal wire from the battery compartment had broken loose. I resoldered it back and the radio operates fine. If you connect a pair of speakers or headphones you will receive FM Stereo. There was also a DX 392; it had a cassette recorder located in the top half of where the speaker is. I assume a smaller speaker was used to populate the bottom half on that model.

If ya'll like the 390, try the DX 392! True sideband modes, not the BFO. Git mine when I worked at RS. When it went on clearance, I stashed one away until the price dropped. :)

I compared my Tecsun pl-380 as you did this and I live in the same basic location and can say it preformed pretty much the same

I acquired a DX-392 from Ebay for $45.00. There are quite a few of these out there, for good prices. I think they (DX-390, 392, 440, and the Sangean equivalents) are the best radios around, for the price. Except for the sync detector, my Sony ICF-2010 doesn't perform significantly better.

I had one of these. It worked for over 2 decades. Great radio. It finally gave up the ghost and I replaced it with a C Crane. Lost longwave, but there's nothing to listen to there, anyway.
