I lusted after this radio when I was younger. Well, Now I have a really nice example of one. Is it the best? Doubt it, but it's a great little radio that carried the flagship brand of Realistic for a few years in the late 80's.

The 474 was the best talking CB I ever owned. Truckers couldn’t believe it was a stock radio. Didn’t need a power mic either. Turned up the modulation a bit, but otherwise it was stock. Uniden made and RadioShack sold and serviced. I still have it, but it needs recapping. Merry Christmas!

Your story on the 474 brings back so many memories. I also remembered how it would go on those deep discount sales and I scraped up enough money to get one. I also was about the same age as you when I bought it and didn't have a car. No problem though I already had a wacky base station setup with an old 23 channel Sharp mobile. I used a car battery charger for power and the roof TV antenna for signal. Always wondered why my voice would be heard over the house landline!. I got rid of my 474 just a few years ago when I was cleaning out the garage and I didn't have any interest in CBs for the last 20 years. Of course I got the itch back a year later. I now have the 465 which is the mentioned SSB version of the 474, along with several other models.

Love the old Radio Shack CB. Yes, put it in the VW bus. As you showed, there are two speaker jacks in the back. The PA one is so you can make announcements through the CB microphone. The other is to listen to the CB from an external speaker but you have to turn on the MON or monitor switch. Makes it easy to switch back and forth between the internal and external speakers.

In Australia, Radioshack was known as Tandy Electronics. My first radio was the TRC434, which was a base unit. I liked it because it had a number pad, so you could just type in the channel you wanted. As a blind person, this was much easier than something with a click dial where you had to remember what channel you left it on, and then count the clicks. Really enjoy your radio reviews Mate.

That is just one thoughtful radio. Very kind of Uniden to let Radio Shack badge it. There is an led for modulation, a since phased out feature, and the AWI light. That is your built in swr meter. I'm purty sure an swr of 3:1 lights it up. It's only flaw is that phased out mic plug, from the MIDI keyboard and mixer interface isle.

The led for AWI is antenna warning indicator, basically for high SWR and it saved me before, was using it in my truck years ago and say the light come on upon transmit and took a look and found damage to my coax with exposed center touching braid. Back in the late 80s/early 90s, I had the Realistic SSB radio. Can't remember the model, but I tuned and tweaked it and that was one great performing, reliable CB radio. I miss the old Radio Shack stores pre-90s when many of them were still a great source when you were in a hurry for just a part or two. During the 80s, we started nicknaming them Radio Shaft as the quality and availability of ham radio parts started to decline. Still they had good scanners and CBs.

Excellent video (Eric) Farponit Farms :) my first radio of Radio Shack I used was Realistic TRC -48 23 channel base , mobile radio plus Am / SSB also on channel knob was a 1 to 22 then ○ dot and 23 then 1 again but on hair on ○ and 22 I had 24 channel on Am also LSB & USB borrowed from friend family also had stock with Volume come for Volume of Recieve by Remote button push on ! Plus Antenna use was Shakespeare 1/2 2 section Antenna 21 feet and 100 feet of Radio Shack big RG8A/U coax base type had up 40 feet on pipe to fence post on big Machinery shed on home farm But 48 RadioShack radio put out 7 watts Am , 38 watts SSB PEP when tune up and stock 4 watts am , 32 SSB did get Clarifier open open for Recieve and Transmit together too more swing on sides of different Pontential control buy tech! Got lots contacts and had fun time chat from 1986 to 1999 then sold and plus RadioShack one base station Antenna blue in called Cross Bow like Shakespeare Pogo Stick but 18 feet it go ruin by wicked Thunderbolt hit in 1992 blew up apart from Lightning Strom badly did not have hook up to RadioShack 48 radio but blew fuse inside radio on from shock wave! Years in Catolage of RadioShack Eric always want Realistic TRC -428 Nine Scan 40 channel was always sold out in 2 business near me and one there showcase introduced in 1982 to 1992 from $75.00 to $175.00 never got one was so picky also piss of myself not get one ever and friend of who lady had one she told do want my CB from car and said sure but sadly past away then one day near my Cellphone in working a CB radio get noticed a CB radio in Marketplace was ask if know me please tell got something for him ! So got hold her Daughter and her Boyfriend and said in Daughter mom will was my name give radio to me ! So caught in person Daughter and Son in Law , was Realistic TRC 428 Nice Scan need work on got up running with new Power Cord with Fuse , fix Orgnail Microphone up , also TRC 48 mic need rewired up to work perfectly to but no bracket but made one plus Lol after big clean up to radio the Squelch Pontential Control quit and seized up to! Plus Recieve jump in out so had rewired all controls except channel selector plus replace meter light and 2 red leds one for channel 9 plus another channel on scan and other Modulation blinking when Transmitted up ! Then still have lose 1/2 Recieve found the adjustment pot was corrosion on and rust joint on circuit board to had replaced to! But all work 80 okay now and do check Google Search found the 428 Nine Scan is Cobra 29 GTL like LTD Classic of 1980's style &Uniden 66 XL radio in one radio but different features too it ! Plus this Realistic TRC 428 Nine Scan like know someone answers it to if had one or been near because take Microphone off still hear Recieve on plus adjustment Volume turns on also off, RF Gain control in one adjustment it , Squelch, Tone Control, NB/ANL filters switch, Speakers, Scan channels plus Daul watch 2 at time , CB to PA to Mon mode plus hook External Speakers and PA to! But one feature like 3 way switch for CB in middle , PA up top , MON bottom like is when flick PA leds says PA but this radio doesn't show shut 40 cube off on leds and hear self if got PA jack with speaker on it of Mono and Go CB 40 cube light up channel on last and on MON mode same switch with PA jack speaker hook Recieve only on no transmist and used light up MO the OE doesn't work not more on red Leds 40 channel cube and had tech check over both those problems he said don't have worry about buddy it all okay ! Also not worth money try fix it and got 98% working okay on keep going till dies for never use again! But also got one finally since 2013 of TRC 428 and got lots others RadioShack from 1971 to 2010 years used in past and some need replaced parts on to work again! Plus used 2 meter only Mobile rig of there and was fun radio use!

That radio is a beauty! Your description of talking with the Radio Shack employee about the radio was the same as my experience; the only difference for me was that it was about 10 years earlier. I ALWAYS wanted a Realistic base station when I was a teenager, but never had the money to get all the extra stuff. Like you, I ended up with handhelds too LOL Now I have my base - a TRC-48 SSB that I picked up for a few bucks. Needs work but I finally achieved my goal Haha. I would use the TRC-474 in the bus over that AM/FM model; more period correct and AM-only is still relevant out there on the road. Thanks for sharing!

Yeah I never understood the lack of love for Radio Shack gear. Their gear was solid. Speaking of the Shakespear antenna... I had it paired with a TRC-214 I think it was, a 3 channel with only a couple watts. I could reach the other side of my city! I'll admit, I've put on an Australian accent in low power mode to mess with people on heavy skip days. Oh how much fun was had. The internet really subplanted CB thanks to IRC, later Yahoo voice chat rooms, which operated much the same way as a public CB channel. :)

I had one of those in the car back in the late 80s. Really solid little radio. I still remember sitting by the base station waiting for my wife to check in on the little Radio Shack radio on her way home from work and it always sounded good even with the standard microphone. By the way, the AW1 is actually a AWI which is Antenna Warning Indicator, which of course would flash if your SWR was too high. I don't know if I still have it anywhere in my junk, but I hope I do.

@@FarpointFarms The only thing about it I didn't care for was the plug-in microphone that did not have a regular screw on connector, but it never turned out to be a problem. The wiring never did fail.

Yep. Install the 474 in the bus with a 102" whip. But take the President along as well because if you're on an extended trip you'll go nuts without having LSB38 and you know that's true!

AWI = "Antenna Warning Indicator", letting you know that your SWR rating is too high thereby inhibiting your best signal output. I was a Radio manager back in those days and your right, you had to know your equipment.
