In this episode all about the First Men of Westeros we look at their origins in Essos, their arrival in Westeros via the Arm of Dorne and their subsequent war with the indigenous peoples they found there, ending in the Pact at the Isle of Faces. In the second half of the episode we tour Westeros to paint a picture of the various regions under the First Men during the Age of Heroes prior to the Andal invasion.

This was wonderful - no-one else comes close. It struck me listening to this video, the statement Lord Brynden makes to Bran ‘A weirwood will live forever, if undisturbed.’ It makes me wonder, rather than trees that had runes on them rotting, as you suggested, perhaps they were on weirwoods, and they were cut down by the Andals? It doesn’t seem much of a stretch for the First Men, having adopted the Old Gods, to also mark their stories and history on weirwoods. It’s as near to ‘the trees remember’ as the First Men would’ve had after the pact, before they somehow started creating their own Greenseers. Then…stretching this a bit further…perhaps maesters with the early Andals actually saw some of these runes on trees, and that’s where the ‘tales written down thousands of years later’ come from.

54:00 Considering the motif of the maesters ruining the fantasy reader's Fantasy Fun by providing mundane explanations for fantastic events, (Hammer of the Waters magic = Cassander's 'Melting Ice Caps'), it seems telling that the Others are written such that the prevailing expectation in the audience is that the Others are supposed to play a role allegorical of a climate crisis. The author has massaged his readers into an unwitting alliance with the Fantasy-Fun-ruining maesters. This does not bode well for the prevailing expectation.
