The DB25-D is an interesting DMR radio. It is more powerful than a hand held radio and only partially bigger, but you don't get to the full 50 watts of other mobile radios.

I enjoy this radio. I actually installed one in a smart car and its fun to drive around and talk on DMR. Josh is right. It is a fun radio ONLY when you go in the CPS and configure everything to your liking. Out of the box it's unusable until configured. Digital APRS works good, good reports from local repeaters, and DMR in a very small package

Nice little radio. I figured out how to program this radio without using the software but you can't put repeater names in without use of the software. Very simple once you see it. Press and hold the top right button (B). At this point you can enter Digital or Analogue, input and output frequencies, subtones, high or low power, and then to write this to memory

I picked one up mostly for analog APRS in the car, and it's been working great. There are some interesting gotchas in config, and it's got the normal chinese radio rough edges. But for the price, I'm pretty happy with it so far. Also, you nailed it on the weight / form factor... just feels like a solid little brick. I personally found the speaker a little too loud on volume=1, but I like things quiet :-).

I pre-ordered this radio and got it much sooner than expected. At the same time, I picked up the small Jackery from HF at 10%. Both work great as the start of my go-box, and the radio fits perfectly in my Subaru Outback on the rare occasion I get to travel. I had quite a few issues initially with the CPS, and wish there was an easy way to translate my Anytone Codeplug, as the export and import didn't work very well. Also the transfer rate between my laptop and the radio seems to be 1kb/s, it took forever to load 200k+ contacts to the radio.

I bought this preorder. It is a great little radio. I have a 2021 Ram 1500 and it fits perfectly in the cubby in the dash and the cig lighter plug is right there no need to run power to the battery. I also got a small mag mount antenna that can handle 20+ watts and I have a sun roof and was safely able to run the antenna cable from it through the side to the radio. No holes or anything needing drilled as I used Heavy Duty (Gorilla) double sided tape with the mount and it isn't going anywhere. Now the software is buggy as It had deleted a whole entire zone not sure how it did that. It also will power cycle on me on occasions when I transmit, not sure why through. Overall the size and usage will be great for a many uses. I got two one for my vehicle and one for my wife who has a buick enclave which is harder to mount a radio, can't wait to try that method shorlty. I am told I come in loud and clear when transmitting.

I bought this radio during the pre-order discount period and I gotta say that it tics a lot of boxes for me... but the software and firmware bugs make it difficult to recommend! At least as it is currently. I hope after some updates things will improve. I have 3 DMR radios that I use frequently... one for the shack, one for my belt, and this one for the car. This one is by far the most difficult to get programmed because of the software bugs. Deleting channels in zone 1 will default channels in zone 3 for example! And sometimes fields change seemingly at random, it's maddening! I've noticed some strange firmware behavior also. I hope they get the kinks worked out because this little radio has potential!

I bought one a month or so ago and played around with it for a week. No DMR repeaters in our area at present but I know they are coming. I wanted the GPS and APRS functionality too. I programmed in all our local analog repeaters, both VHF and UHF, and used the radio a lot. I discovered that my particular radio would get very hot and when it did the audio would either disappear all together or break up badly. If I let it cool off it would work again. I tried it in my truck as well as in my shack, both climate controlled, and the issue appeared both places. Radioddity has great customer service and had me return the radio for a replacement that's due today. I really want this little radio to work. Thanks for the review, Josh. Jack K5FIT

Something I found is that when you program the PL transmit tones in the CPS and write to the radio, as long as you don't touch the tone button on the radio, it will not have an overheat problem. As soon as you ever touch the tone button, you will going forward need to set the tone up manually on the radio which requires both TX and RX tone. The issue then comes when it starts getting warm after talking, your receive will go out for anywhere from 5-30 seconds until it cools enough. Seems the RX PL looses frequency stability when warm and won't hear the PL tone to open receive. Someone said that changing from wide to narrow bandwidth fixes this but I have not tried that.

Audio is poor on analog as it distorts quite a bit. You can plug in a external speaker (not a standard speaker plug so you have to get an adaptor or purchase their speaker) Also, when you put the radio in external speaker mode the front firing speaker still goes off and distorts.

I love DMR, but I'm not sure I would add this radio to my inventory. If it were $50 less, I would be tempted just for kicks and giggles. I can see this radio working well in a jeep or a side-by-side due to the small footprint. In my daily driver, I prefer a higher powered rig 50 watt minimum. I could see some backpacking application as well. Love to see the innovation in new radios. Screen looks good.

Looks like most of the major issues with this radio are software-related, and that's true with a lot of Chinese radios on the market (not just DMR either). I would really like to see some kind of open source (unofficial) firmware we can flash to these radios that provide more stability, and possibly even more features like APRS RX and (analog) APRS messaging, which seems to be a feature missing on many of these radios, including my AnyTone 878. Think of RockBox for old iPods except for ham radios.

Hey Josh, the analog audio on this radio is distorted unless you set the volume at 2. If you plug in an external speaker (which does not take a standard speaker out plug) the audio is better but.. In the speaker settings you can set the radio to "speaker only" but when you do this the front speaker still stays on along with your external speaker and you hear the distortion from that front speaker. Also, the radio takes only one DMR id and in this day and age its not acceptable and the display only displays 10 characters when most new radios take 15.

Any view on analog simplex performance? I'm not a repeater or DMR user, but I need a small radio for my daily driver. Being able to use it as a portable for SOTA would be a neat secondary use. I've considered removable faceplate radios, but that would be more or less a permanent install, where this could pull double or triple duty (as in easily movable to other vehicles). Also, how well does it handle intermod and other interference? The Yaesu FT-2900 in my 4x4 doesn't handle that very well to the point I seldom turn it on when I'm in town. Thanks, KI4POT.

I have had one now for a month or so (I was a preorder!). It's a wonderful size for something a bit more powerful than an HT. Hi Josh- I just got this radio and set up the code plug. Two issues. While all my FM repeaters have tones set up in the CPS, when I write to the radio, everything is great until I touch the tone button on the radio. After that the default is CTCSS 62.5 TX/RX. If you change these on the radio to the correct tones- As soon as the radio heats up, you loose receive for several seconds depending on how long you talked. I believe the heat is de-tuning the RX CTCSS circuit. It's become very annoying. Do you have any advice on correcting this? The only way I can fix is to re-write the radio until I accidentally touch the tone button again. One other issue is the analog APRS all set correctly is not being received by my FTD-3 while other radios are being picked up fine. Any ideas here?

I get the whole size thing but I am very concern about the whole digital & computer required issues. I am still a noob ham and am looking for my first mobile radio, right now I'm using my HT with an antenna adapter and handheld mike in my car & that works pretty well using the repeaters locally, haven't done much on simplex (5 watts) and not hearing a lot of simplex traffic here in NE Fl. Cps software complex, no, try using Motorola's software for the high end P25 radios, its a learning curve. So far I like what I see however what I would like to know is are there any controls or settings for output power? Does anyone make an external power amp for digital radios such as these, I live way out in the sticks and with digital your either in the game over here or forget it. 73 from SV9 land!

Look up the FCC ID for the AnyTone 878S. "T4KD868SUHF" and "T4KD868SVHF" There you'll get internal circuit board images. AnyTone made UHF and VHF only versions of the 868 and 878. Radioditty is rebranding the UHF version :)

@@n1kkri Yeah there's not much information on them, I found an old Amazon listing for the UHF model and some on AliExpress but other than that I don't think they were sold for very long or maybe they weren't widely available for purchase and perhaps made as a slightly cheaper mono-band alternative for business use etc.

I was not able to run the CPS software in Linux under Wine, for example. So unless you've got a VM with USB pass thru or a Windows box available, I don't think there's an alternative.

I mentioned in the beginning. You can have an rx group or run promiscuous.

Is it required to receive? The Anytone 878 doesn't require a RX Group List to receive saving a step in the programming.
@DavidB445
@DavidB445 2 жыл бұрын
You don't necessarily need to program Rx groups to receive.. however promiscuous mode is off by default and would need enabled each time the radio is turned on. Hopefully this will change in a future firmware. It will hold 20,000 contacts (talkgroups) officially, however 30,000 can be programmed using third party tools. It will also hold 300,000 DMR IDs so will have no issues uploading the entire worldwide database to the radio :)
@n1kkri
@n1kkri 2 жыл бұрын
@@DavidB445 The problem with promiscuous mode is if on a repeater you will hear other talk groups. I have an older Baofeng DM-1801 with original firmware. If you do not create a RX Group list you have no receive. I had to create a RX Group List for each talk Group/Channel so I would only hear that particular talk group when on it. I understand later firmware removed the need of having to have a RX Group List to listen on the talk group it was programmed for. Appreciate you replies.

The more I learn about DMR the more I wonder why radio amateurs would be interested in it when DSTAR has it beat on so many levels from smaller bandwidth to much more functionality with repeaters, reflectors, and digital communications. I get that it's another mode to play with if you will but it's not even a shiny object to chase after. It's more like radio amateurs are just chasing after a turd.

I hope the internal hardware has improved since the Kydera version. Analog mode is utter shite. Broadcast FM radio bleeds through randomly. Work around is programming analog narrow band but also affects TX and signal reports always poor unless you yell into the microphone. Programming software is flakey. Flogging a dead horse with this radio.
