The 2nd edition of Listography Remastered, where the three of us look at a discography that was previously ranked by Jason, alone. For today's installment we're ranking the 9 studio albums of Radiohead.
****
Radiohead are an English rock band formed in Abingdon, Oxfordshire, in 1985. The band consists of Thom Yorke (vocals, guitar, piano, keyboards), brothers Jonny Greenwood (lead guitar, keyboards, other instruments) and Colin Greenwood (bass), Ed O'Brien (guitar, backing vocals) and Philip Selway (drums, percussion). They have worked with producer Nigel Godrich and cover artist Stanley Donwood since 1994. Drawing influence from varied genres, Radiohead's experimental approach to rock has been credited for advancing the sound of alternative rock. They have been acclaimed as one of the foremost rock bands of the 21st century.
After signing to EMI in 1991, Radiohead released their debut single "Creep" in 1992. It became a worldwide hit after the release of their debut album, Pablo Honey (1993). Their popularity and critical standing rose in the United Kingdom with the release of their second album, The Bends (1995). Radiohead's third album, OK Computer (1997), brought them international fame; noted for its complex production and themes of modern alienation, it is often acclaimed as a landmark record of the Generation X era. Kid A (2000) marked a dramatic change in style, incorporating influences from electronic music, jazz, 20th-century classical music and krautrock. Though Kid A divided listeners, it was hailed as the best album of the decade by several publications. It was followed by Amnesiac (2001), recorded in the same sessions.
Hail to the Thief (2003) fused rock and electronic music with lyrics inspired by the War on Terror, and was Radiohead's final album for EMI. Their subsequent releases have pioneered alternative release platforms such as pay-what-you-want and BitTorrent; Radiohead self-released their seventh album, In Rainbows (2007), as a download for which customers could set their own price, to critical and chart success. Their eighth album, The King of Limbs (2011), an exploration of rhythm, was developed using extensive looping and sampling. A Moon Shaped Pool (2016) prominently featured Jonny Greenwood's orchestral arrangements. Jonny Greenwood, Yorke, Selway, and O'Brien have released solo albums.
As of 2011, Radiohead have sold more than 30 million albums worldwide. Their awards include six Grammy Awards and four Ivor Novello Awards. The band have achieved seven top 10 hits on the UK Singles Chart: "Creep" (1992), "Street Spirit (Fade Out)" (1996), "Paranoid Android" (1997), "Karma Police" (1998), "No Surprises" (1998), "Pyramid Song" (2001) and "There There" (2003). The band have also achieved two top 40 hits on the US Billboard Hot 100. Rolling Stone named them one of the 100 greatest artists of all time and Rolling Stone readers voted them the second-best artist of the 2000s. Five Radiohead albums have been included in Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time lists, and Radiohead are the most nominated act in Mercury Prize history, with five nominations. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2019.

I have to admit that I've only now gotten around to listening to OK Computer in full. I'd heard Paranoid Android and thought it was a good song, but I didn't get what the fuss was all about. OK Computer is without a doubt a masterpiece in both concept and execution. You can feel the stark isolation flowing throughout the album, and yet it remains eminently listenable despite the lack of warmth and connectedness. This is maybe the most original album I've heard in the last 30 years. Thanks for being the impetus to get me listen, finally. One at a time, the songs don't have the same impact as listening to the entire group. I get I it now.

9. King Of Limbs (Great album, just a bit slow for my taste, Bloom is brilliant.) 8. Pablo Honey (Awesome and fun, You, Blowout, Anyone, and Creep really stand out to me, but the rest isn't bad at all!) 7. A Moon Shaped Pool (Beautiful album, I never get tired of hearing Tinker Tailor!) 6. In Rainbows (This one should be the perfect Radiohead album, but it's missing something for me. House of Cards is kinda boring in my opinion, but the rest is brilliant. All I Need might be the most beautiful song ever written, still a 10/10) 5. Hail To The Thief (It's brilliant, weird, and angry. 2 + 2 = 5 is so good, Sail The Moon is beautiful, There There, I Will, Scatterbrain, Wolf at The Door, what's not to love about this album?!) 4. The Bends (Perfect album, [Nice Dream] is ethereal, Planet Telex is one of my all-time favorite songs... The whole thing is perfect, it's amazing.) 3. Kid A (It's so good, every single song on here is brilliant, the first 4 notes of the album give me shivers every time. Shout out to Optimistic and In Limbo for being awesome) 2. Amnesiac (It's weird, somewhat hard to listen to at times, and PERFECT. Every single song on here does something unique, Dollars and Cents has to be one of my all-time favorites, along with Like Spinning Plates. Only gripe with this one Pull/Pulk and the rendition of Life In A Glasshouse. Really cool songs in my opinion, but they can be a bit a of hindrance in later listens. Love the OK Computer version of Glasshouse so much. 1. OK Computer (It's perfect from start to finish, every note played on this album is perfect. Every single song Thom wrote during this period of his life is brilliant, Big Ideas, Big Boots, Lift... Why didn't they just finish writing these songs during this time? Those three songs or at least their OK Computer versions are my top 3 favorite songs of all time. Sadly, none of them made it on OK Computer, but it doesn't really matter because every other musician would have just given up if they did add them. Let Down, Airbag, No Surprises, Climbing Up The Walls, and The Tourist are standout tracks for me, but that's probably because I've listened to the other songs about a million times) Radiohead is my favorite band, my picks from 7 - 1 are all in my top 10 favorite albums of all time.

That's okay, I don't blame you. Personally, I just have more enjoyment listening to OK Computer compared to their other works like ASMP and TKOL. This doesn't mean TKOL or ASMP are bad, far from it. It's just that I find OK Computer to be more rewarding due to Thom's writing style at the time. Quiet verses, loud chorus, satisfying payoff at the end of the song. Every track on OK Computer follows this formula and it's brilliant.

I like the three person format and wide views on this band. Thanks guys. Sometimes hard for me to separate the objective (OK is a classic album with extraordinary songs aclaimed by fans and critics alike to I really enjoy other albums more) In Rainbows (a perfect record - I enjoy it every time) Kid A (my first Radiohead album purchased out of a cheap bin - it really blew me away at the time. I’m a big Eno fan from way back so this album made immediate sense to me - did not seem too experimental but perfect way to start the 2000s - I feel like this should really be my number 1 some days - I had not liked anything by Radiohead before this but learned to like the earlier records over time) A Moon Shaped Pool (Will stand the test of time very wel - a real grower for me) The Bends ( A little too 90s sounding but a very powerful record overall - one of Thom's greatest vocal performances) OK Computer (undoubtedly a good record but it can grate after a while - one or two songs too many - I was honestly disappointed with this and still think it’s a bit of a sacred cow - one of Thom’s least impressive vocal performances and most whiny sounding - controversial opinion perhaps but I don’t care - after hearing Kid A first I was very disappointed at how conventional this was - I almost never listen to it - I saw Radiohead on the Hail tour and the OK Computer songs were so much better live than on record - the other songs were too but the OK songs really stood out) King of Limbs (I always enjoy this more than I expect to - short and sweetish - I like Aphex Twin and Autechre so this album makes a lot of sense to me) Hail to the Thief (Overlong. Trim a few songs away and it may have ranked higher. 40-45 minutes max for a Radiohead album. Thom can begin to grate on the longer albums - rarely listen to it as its a chore) Amnesiac (I used to like it a lot more but it’s hard to sit through. Packt, Pyramid Song and Glasshouse are highlights) Pablo Honey (I don’t have anything to say about this - indifferent) I don't listen to Radiohead much these days. when I do I tend to binge on them for a few weeks and not listen for a couple of years or until the next album comes out.

Not sure what took me so long to watch this but this was great to see as a long time Radiohead fan. I am pretty sure the first song that grabbed me was "Street Spirit" way back in the day on Muchmusic and "Just" solidified that love (such an iconic music video). Ok Computer has the distinction of being the most I've ever spent on a single new cd in 1998, I spent 30 Canadian dollars on it but it was worth every penny. I'd say my ranking is close to Kramzer's especially having Hail To The Thief at #2, I've always had a special love for that one. I think I'd flip The Bends to #3 and Kid A to #4 though.

After becoming a big fan of the German band Can, I can understand and appreciate where radiohead were coming from on King Of Limbs. It’s not a record you would come back to like Ok Computer or The Bends, but it’s under appreciated. I think people find it easy to rank it at the lowest spot because Radiohead’s discography is so solid that it’s hard to put any other record at the bottom. Amnesiac slaps.

I think that Radiohead more than most modern bands are so subjective to their fans and that's a great compliment because of their amazing variety. I'm 43, so do the math, The Bends came out when I was 17 and I bought it on cassette tape before OK Computer was out, and it DID kinda change my music taste for good, and that's huge. I liked it so much that the first time I listened to OK I was a bit disappointed... though that did not last long, it grew on me quickly. Also, me and my college friends were all huge on Radiohead and unlike perhaps some people we seemed to have a similar group think and collectively agreed to love Kid A and Amnesiac and so Amnesiac specifically is higher on my list than y'alls even if some of that is nostalgia. ALSO, so glad to see Hail To the Thief high on those lists, was such a fave of mine (and still is). Finally, I saw them touring on OK Computer with Spiritualized opening and WOW what a show. They started the song "The Bends" and it really sounded fine, but Thom STOPPED the band and was like "come on guys what the fuck was that", and then they started it again and BOOM just about the hugest sound I've ever heard a band make. I saw them again on Hail to the Thief tour but unfortunately did too many mushrooms and that show is a bit more hazy. DON'T DO TOO MANY MUSHROOMS AT A ROCK SHOW FOLKS, that's some expensive memory loss. Ranking least best to best best: King of Limbs, Moon Shaped Pool, In Rainbows, Amnesiac, Kid A, Hail to the Thief, Pablo Honey, The Bends, OK Computer.

Kramzer, they actually DID open the Live At The 9 Spot (or 10 Spot) concert with "fitter, happier" back in 1998. I think I asked you in another video: even though OK Computer is your favorite album of all time, do you think it could have been even better given the B-sides they wrote at the time. I mean, "Palo Alto," "Lull," "Meeting In The Aisle," "Polyethylene (Pts. 1 & 2)" are all incredible. I have never enjoyed "Climbing Up The Walls" or "Electioneering" too much and I've always thought any two of the songs I mentioned...and there are others...would make this album better. Thoughts?
@jonahlouque9621
@jonahlouque9621 2 жыл бұрын
Electioneering is a strange track, same with Climbing Up The Walls, but I adore them. Songs I’d rather have on the album? To start, I’d rather it be a double album with all the B-Sides included like OKNOTOK. But aside from that, I don’t think other songs really fit on the album. Other unreleased tracks at that time would be a bit out of place. Lift, Big Boots/Man Of War, Big Ideas/Nude, Life In A Glasshouse, I Will, Last Flowers, Dogwanderer… the list goes on. Could you completely rearrange the album to fit some of these B-Sides and Unreleased Tracks? Absolutely. In fact, in the OK Computer Minidisc Leak, there’s a version of the original track listing for OK Computer that included Polyethylene and (I think) Lift. It’s on one of the last minidiscs.

IMO Radiohead’s of the hardest bands to compare their discography, it’s all so different. Sometimes you’re in the mood for the more alt 90’s material, sometimes you’re in the mood for electronic experimental 2000’s material. If I had to make a list myself I’d go 9.Pablo honey 8. king of limbs 7. hail to the thief 6. Amnesiac 5. A moon shaped pool 4. In rainbows 3. Ok computer 2. The bends 1. Kid A

Not a band I've ever jumped into bed with. I actually saw them live on the In Rainbows tour and I thought it was one of the most incredible live concerts I'd ever seen (which I still think it was), yet I've never enjoyed sitting at home listening to their records. Part of the issue for me is that I don't really buy into Yorke's persona or voice, both of which get on my nerves (same issue I have with Michael Stipe/REM) Some of Yorke's lyrics (particularly from Kid A) annoy me too as they sound like something he scribbled on the back of a cigarette packet on his way to the mic. I'd never accuse them of being musically crap, just not my bag overall.

This was a really interesting discussion. It really caused to me reflect on what I like and sometimes don't like about the band. I've followed Radiohead off and on since Pablo Honey, which I think gets unfairly maligned as it's a pretty good alternative rock album, especially for fans of the Smiths and R.E.M., two of my favorite bands of all time. When The Bends came out in 1995, it was clear Radiohead had upped their game though and in my mind, they were the best rock band on the planet, at that time. I mean Oasis and Blur were enjoyable, but they were not in the same league, artistically. Also, I saw Radiohead live twice that year and they were amazing! What I love about The Bends is sure, it's a British band with British sensibilities, but there was also a palpable American indie rock influence with traces of R.E.M., The Pixies, and Sonic Youth running throughout and this was the time where I had gone from being an anglophile to getting way more into American indie rock. The Bends remains my personal favorite of theirs, even if it's not their most artistic or ambitious. As for OK Computer, this was the album where they started to get really arty and sophisticated and took their craft to an even higher level, but the rock element had not completely gone (for a period) yet. Believe it or not, OK Computer took about five listens to click with me, but when it did, I loved it. Now, Kid A was quite alienating to me and weirdly, came out it in the summer of 2000. It is not a summer album! Kid A is one of those albums that is a total achievement, but I have to be in the right mood to listen to it. This is partly due to the dark, desolate vibe of it, and the fact that I hated everything electronic during that time, and thus it took even longer for me to connect with, But I have to give Radiohead credit. This album might have been a gateway drug for getting me interested in Brian Eno, who I've been really into the last year or so, and starting to open me up to electronic sounds (although I still prefer guitars and other tangible instruments). I did get Hail to the Thief and liked most of it, but when In Rainbows came out, I was uninterested. I got it like 3 years later, and for me, there are some great songs and some really dull, unmemorable songs on that album (I agree partly with Joe). I never picked up King of Limbs, and probably won't, but I really like A Moon Shaped Pool. It has rock elements, but it also has that icy soundscape vibe that they are so good at. I also checked out Amnesiac years after it was released and would say about 80% is enjoyable. Here's the thing about Radiohead that Joe may have been alluding to: Because they are so self-consciously arty (and arguably pretentious at times), they are a band that is easy to admire, but not always easy to enjoy... unless you're in the right mood or state of mind (For me, that's a melancholy or introspective mood).

Correction: Kid A actually came out in October 2000, which makes a lot more sense. I think I thought it was summer because I was in San Francisco for my friend's wedding when I bought it and it was sunny and warm at the time as it often is in California.

I think I probably like Thom Yorke's solo stuff and various collaborations at the same level as In Rainbows, OK Computer and whatever would be at the top for me. The only thing I'm consistent on is Pablo Honey is my least favourite. I still like it compared to the era and genre it was but it's really simple compared to everything that came after.

This sounds a lot better than I remember 4) A Moon Shaped Pool - not enough heavy hitters, but it may be the one I put on most while I work 3) Kid A - I like all the songs, a lot of heavy hitters, but not as many as... 2) OK Computer - because I've never been a fan of Electioneering or Climbing Up The Walls 1) The Bends - how did this slip under the radar when it was released? This should have been lauded as much as OK Computer, Kid A and In Rainbows were upon release.

Thanks for the response! I followed the channel today and I’m diving into lots of your other ranking videos. For me In Rainbows has all of the hallmarks of Radiohead (odd time signatures, polyrhythm, overlapping delays, angular bass lines), but without the cold and isolated feel of Amnesiac or the relentless density of TKOL. In Rainbows is what I think Radiohead sounds like when they aren’t trying to challenge fans or piss off their label. I also enjoy the production on In Rainbows more than any other Radiohead album. It has space provided entirely by instrumental arrangements with limited overdubs. Everything is mic’d so close and the entire album feels like I’m sitting in a living room playing along with the band. All that goodness plus some of the most innovative bass lines Colin Greenwood has put on wax. I absolutely love it from end to end.

Radiohead is my favorite band ever and they don't have such thing as a bad album. I won't be including Pablo Honey as I only listended to it once. English is not my native language so I will probably have a lot of spelling mistakes 1- Ok Computer. Favorite album of all time 2- In Rainbows. Easily radiohead's second best. Masterpiece 3- Kid A. Used to be way lower on my list but now I see it as a very consistent album with a very unique atmosphere, kid A is more than the sum of it's parts, and that's what makes it so good 4- A Moon Shaped Pool. Excelent, wouldn't change a thing. 5- Amnesiac. Love this one.The album is insanely good until we get to Morning Bell, which kills the flow of the album and should have been replaced by Cuttooth. This small change makes the album lift a little bit before the slower final tracks. I also like playing Worrywort and Fog instead of Life in a Glasshouse which feels al little out of place and agressive in contrast with the previous songs. Beautiful album over all. 6- Hail to the Thief. Very inconsistent. The album gets way better if we remove Backdrifts and We Suck Young Blood from the tracklist. Making it a very upbeat, light and easy listening album. Great album, most of the songs are really solid but very few of them are actual bangers. 7- The Bends. Used to be my number 8 but although it has some bad songs the great ones are still great. Sulk shouldn't have made it to the cut 8- The King of Limbs. Very interesting and very weird. Feels lazy, unfinished and uninspired. It's bigger problem is the incredibly short lenght time which would not be a problem if they included the killer songs The Butcher (right after feral, closing side 1) , Daily Mail (between lotus flower and codex) and the magnificent Staircase right before Separator.
