I sometimes disagree with Ryan and George. I’m going to duffer but respect honesty. This song is genius. Pure pure genius. They both did not like Johnny Greenwoods guitar solo before and after the “rain down” part. If you look at lists of the best guitar solo lists these two solos always make the top 100 guitar solos in history and sometimes are close to top 10. Johnny Greenwood killed it he made the guitar sound like a digital computer and pulled it off. Tho George acknowledged the genius of the song. Well I am still thinking Lost in Vegas are the goats because of their honesty.

To be fair i also love Alice in Chains, but i never got into Radiohead, even though i like some songs. And the main difference between them It’s the voice. Layne is a powerhouse, Yorke is a more peculiar singer not for everyone, but the sound overall is more “fragile”

Lyrically they are also uplifting because they help those who are isolated or who are going through hard times feel like they are not alone. Surely your point is that it’s the very fact that Radiohead’s lyrics are depressing that people going through similar experiences can relate to that, and in turn be uplifted by a feeling that they are not alone. These songs can be both depressing and uplifting at the same time- it is precisely the somber nature of the lyricism that has the power to unify and uplift.

If you're genuinely happy then how can one song or person affect you so much that you gotta avoid it altogether? Idk I think our society is just obsessed with always feeling happy and we don't accept our darker emotions. While in fact they are a core part of our being and make us whole. Only accepting positive emotions in music and people just seems naive.

One of my favorite things about Radiohead songs is the way they almost overwhelm you at first listen with unexpected rhythms, dissonant notes, dense layers of sounds, jarring contrasts, and even deceptive simplicity at times. They almost always feel "uncomfortable" on first listen, but interesting. And then a handful of listens later all the elements feel natural, complementary and the music is enlivening because it takes you to a new place. Appreciate how you two approach music criticism from a place of appreciation and honest experience. To look at something from the perspective of what's interesting about it, what does it have to offer, is how we grow in life.

Couldn’t have said it better. Radiohead takes you to that slightly uncomfortable place musically, often emotionally, and that 5th, 6th, 7th listen, when it all comes together is you finding comfort in that discomfort they have crafted for you. That beautiful destination is the radiohead journey.

Yes, I think if one is a fan of prog rock then Radiohead is easy to get into. They are very creative. Personally, I have a love/hate relationship with them. I think they are great on this album and some others in which the guitars are king. Some other albums are like nails on a chalkboard to me. I got Kid A as my first Radiohead album. I did not listen to them again for a long time. Ughh. But many of their albums are great. ;)

Exactly. I generally do not like prog. And I'm not really that big into Radiohead. To be honest, OK Computer is the only album I really like. But nothing about it after a couple of listens doesn't sound organic. The 7/8 bits sound perfectly natural to me. This song is just such a wonderful rollercoaster of textures, tempos, and feelings. Love love love it. This entire album is just such a MOOD.

There's a live version of this song that was recorded on the night of the 9/11 attacks. Thom Yorke introduces the song by asking "So who here doesn't know?", and after a little confused explanation they start playing. It's just so emotional, you can tell Thom realises what he's saying as he sings "That's it sir, you're leaving, the crackle of pigskin, the dust and the screaming, the yuppies networking, the panic, the vomit, God loves his children". It's devastating and haunting.

THIS ⬆️ 💯🔥 Radiohead are unlike anyone else - you would not believe the progression in their sound over their entire back catalogue whilst somehow still sounding identifiably Radiohead. They defy genres. The musicianship as you said, is stellar. And Thom Yorke is arguably the best male vocalist of our time. Definitely my No.1. I can understand Paranoid Android being a more difficult first listen - it’s not an easy record to absorb due to all the changes… it was compared to Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody when it first came out, which similarly grew in popularity over a longer period of time. But be in no doubt, almost all of your favourite guitar bands (and many in other genres) will have members that were directly influenced by Radiohead. They are masters of the craft and will sit alongside bands like Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and Bowie in the Hall of Fame as all-time greats. Go down the Radiohead rabbit hole. For me, this song is Gen Y's "Bohemian Rhapsody". It's dark, complex, and the transitions are insane. It really speaks to a generation who grew up with technology that promoted isolation and apathy. Technical prowess on this level is getting harder to find in commercial music.

For Millennials born in the 80s, we were taught through sci-fi films and novels that computers were going to eventually destroy or enslave us (See: Terminator, Blade Runner and The Matrix for example.) Kids who had early access to computers and the internet were often bullied for being "nerds" before Big Bang Theory made it LOL SO COOL. The album, OK Computer deals with a lot of dystopian ideas and the emptiness of feeling alone.

Man, first listens with Radiohead are always hard for me. For over twenty years now, every time they release an album I listen to it and think, "I don't know if I like this one... I kinda wanted more of what they did on the last one." Then a month later I'm like, "This is their absolute best. They can't possibly do better than this!" and then the process repeats itself. (Someday I'll learn...lol)

@ghost mall I’ve always thought Kid A is their best album but Ok computer has their best songs, what i mean is that Kid A as an album is better that Ok Comp because it feels more well placed together and all songs feel like part of something bigger, but if you listen to the songs separately, you most likely will like more the songs from Ok comp because they can stand alone easier than the ones from Kid A

I am not sure that Radiohead is going to be Ryan's thing. I am trying to think of something that is not so subdued off the to of my head. But I thing George has found a new band to listen to. George might like Krama Police. My favorite is High and Dry off of The Bends.

@@styot I totally agree with you that there more and grunge/ alt-rock the first couple albums. Just don't know if Ryan is going to in brace the sound of Thom Yorke's vocals. I feel that they probably should have started with some older stuff and then work their way up the chain of albums to give Ryan a fair chance of understanding Radiohead as a band. I completely understand Ryan's reaction and respect his reasoning. This might not be his cup of tea. I hope that they will do more older Radiohead.

One of my favourite Lost in Vegas clips. I love this song, and I love that Ryan is honest about not liking it. It makes it worth watching these reaction clips. When people are honest, it's still interesting to watch. And bless George for still trying to stand up for the song. Keep it up guys.

When I first got into Radiohead in my early teens, I didn't find Paranoid Android that phenomenal song, when everyone else was hyping it. At that time it was too experimental and complex for me but I absolutely loved every track on The Bends. And through The Bends (and other songs on OK Computer) I had to back listening this one to finally understand how great of a song it is and how it grew on me through multiple listens. So probably Ryan has to listen couple songs off The Bends and OK and then listen to this a dozen times more to understand it better

This is a masterpiece of the 90’s. No doubt about it. The technical level is crazy. The change in signature, beat, 7/4, 4/4, is pure genius. No one ever did anything like this and made it to end up on MTV with it. One of the most innovative bands ever.

Go to the Bends for their more accessible material. They are amazing live. They take basement bedsitter rock that should only appeal to a dozen shoegazers and they make it work as stadium rock. Incredible.

Ryan would probably like No Surprises 🤣 Great reaction, it's crazy how before it even started I somehow knew Ryan would hate it and George would either love it or at least appreciate the technical aspects. Karma Police, Let Down, Exit Music, Lucky, Electioneering, etc. The whole album is an utter masterpiece and it is responsible for some of my greatest teenage memories and musical growth. I was supremely lucky to be 16 when Ok Computer dropped. I'd love to see you react to Fake Plastic Trees next though to be honest

@@mattjns not true, radiohead does have a certain mood and can be really hard to take in the first time. They do have good musical insight and appreciate the musicianship. Cant get offended if they dont like your song choices. My 15 year old self couldnt even comprehend paranoid android the first time i heard it 😂

Hmm, tough song as an introduction to Radiohead. Street Spirit(Fade Out), High and Dry, Karma Police, 15 Step or Bodysnatchers might have been a better way to introduce this amazing band. They're easlily in my top 10 bands of all time. Thom Yorke is a musical genius. Give these songs above a listen guys.

Unless you were already a huge fan, this album takes quite a few listens to "get". But I assure you, once you do, you'll understand everything that is special about this band. There's a reason Rolling Stone put this as the #42 Best Album of all time! In terms of muscianship, versatility, creativity and badassery, these guys and Tool are far above everyone else in music today.

I think Thom Yorke said the whole "off with his head / why doesn't he remember my name" part was inspired by a loud, abrasive, self-important person he overheard in an LA bar. It freaked him out how unpleasant that person was. I've overheard people like that in London bars too.

Love the honesty in your reactions - mine were similar the first time I heard this song/album. In fact they were the same for the first 4 or 5 times. And then, it was literally like an awakening and I got it. Now it stands head and shoulders above any other album I love. Never get bored of it and every listen seems to unearth something new.

Y'all should do "Lotus Flower" by them. Way different from this; Ryan might even actually dig it. If you're familiar with the symbolism behind the lotus flower (enlightenment, lack of attachment, liberation, etc.), it will give you another level of appreciation of the song. There are a lot of songs where people will hem and haw over whether they should listen to this version or that version. Usually this is an annoying thing from annoying fans. But man oh man is it worth it hear the “right” version of Lotus Flower. The album version is cool, but the live arrangement (actually live or From The Basement) has BASS on it in ways the studio version lacks.

I think most Radiohead fans know that Ryan's initial reaction is not that uncommon, especially to this song. On a nuanced and highly conceptual album, this is certainly the song that aims to corral all of the album's themes, making it quite a lot to jump into at first. Hope you guys give some of their other songs a try. One of the greatest bands of all time.

Considering this song was a massive hit I dont think it is all that hard to get into on a surface level. I didn't know shit about music or even knew how to listen to music properly when I first heard this song, but I still loved it and listened to it all the time. I think the reason Ryan couldn't quite mess with it is because it doesn't have a very hard or driving bassline, it's fairly subdued, and Ryan loves and feels groove from a strong bassline, so maybe that's why he couldn't get into it
