A guitar lesson for "Weird Fishes/Arpeggi" from Radiohead's 2007 album In Rainbows.
In this tutorial, I break down all of the key guitar parts in the mix. I had trouble finding a complete tutorial for Weird Fishes on KZbin so I wanted to give my take on the many nuances and details of this song, which is in standard tuning. I can hear at least 3 or 4 guitar tracks playing at once in the original recording, so in this lesson I walk through how Jonny Greenwood, Ed O'Brien, and Thom Yorke play it live while still staying faithful to the In Rainbows version.
This is my favorite Radiohead track. It finally clicked with me one day after many listens (like many Radiohead songs do) and very quickly became one of my favorite songs of all-time. I've never heard another song like it. Arpeggi is simply beautiful in the way it builds and takes you to another place. From a thematic standpoint, it's heartbreaking yet somehow simultaneously uplifting.
There are some really raw and interesting versions of this song from the 2006 tour before In Rainbows was released so give those a listen. Also check out Lianne La Havas covering this song at Glastonbury in 2013. It's Weird Fishes with an R&B vibe. Maybe the best Radiohead cover ever.
Guitar: 2013 Fender American Standard Stratocaster
Amp: Fender Blues Junior
Microphone: AKG P220
Audio was mixed using Reaper.
Thanks for watching!

They do the things that take a song to another level. I think it was Ed O'Brien who spoke about how the direction of Radiohead after OK Computer scared him because he didn't think he was capable of the stuff.

Great description of the song! I feel exactly the same way and it evolved and resonated within me the same way. It wasn't my favorite at first as well, then one day I just heard it differently and have been obsessed since. It makes me feel so many different emotions that I always have a different experience listening . Thanks for the tutorial even though it's a little above my talent level, but I'll still try to learn it. Thanks brother! Great job

Really awesome job, man! And that you shot this in one take is equally impressive! You’re breakdown of all of the chords validated the uke ukulele tutorial I did of this song, and also showed me what I missed (like the Gmaj7 on the outro). I always felt that In Rainbows was Radiohead’s culmination of their past albums; a masterpiece of chord experimentation, Thom’s incredible voice, and the band’s musicianship, in general. It really is their most romantic album and has crystallized so many feelings of love that one goes through - from the infatuation of All I Need, to the I-wanna-be-with-you-but-I-can’t of House of Cards. There are just so many gorgeous layers to the songs on this album. It’s almost like the album where Radiohead became self-actualized as a band... Anyway, keep up the great work!

Great stuff! Had hoped you'd go over the (imo) most challenging/interesting part of Ed's playing, namely the number of times each pattern is played. If I'm not mistaken this is (for Em7, Fm7, A, GM7) 10 - 11 - 11- 10 the first time, but 11 - 11 - 10 - 11 the second (with the 10 here subdivided into 5-3-2 for the descending a-g-f# pattern). Brilliant songwriting, have listened to this track over 50 times and never noticed how complex the structure actually is under the surface.

If I could make a slight adjustment, for Jonny's playing (over to under) rather than (under to over) until all 3 of them start playing. High e, down one, high e, down one, thumb. The opposite pattern of the phantom verse! :) Hope it helps. Also Ed is in 3/4 time while Jonny is in 5/4.

I have no problem playing the actual beginning picking pattern for Ed's guitar, but once the vocals kick in I'm out of sync??? Almost seems like the guitar skips a beat to begin the chord progression again once the vocals start? Is there are way for me to count in my head to be able to play along in sync with the studio version? the number of arpeggios per chord seems inconsistent too, but nobody goes into detail on that.

Sorry for the confusion! Thom Yorke plays this chord for two measures: (9)x798x (from lowest strings to highest), then briefly plays (9)x797x during the second measure. Next, he plays this B minor chord for two measures: (7)x977x. This is where you can add the 9th fret on the G string during the second measure if you'd like. Then those four measures are repeated. So to recap the main chord shapes of what I called "Section B": (9)x798x => (7)x977x then repeat before playing xx767x => xx577x.
