Lilian ok so basically, what the man had to say is completely pointless. but literally everyone who’s seen this video is dying to know. and everyone is so caught up in finding out what the mans saying that they don’t realise the actual meaning behind the song, which is that they (radiohead) can give u a simple thing, like throwing a bone to a dog, and the masses and the people and every other single sheep on planet earth will focus on that so much (focus on the bone rather then why the dog owner through the bone in the first place) and not focus on the actual meaning and concept, causing them to be so hung up over it. it is in the lyrics too “you do it to yourself” further meaning you got yourself into that situation; a situation that doesn’t incoherently matter in the grand scheme of things.

Pretty awesome representation of depression. There's no reason you can't get up or brush your teeth or look up at the clock you just can't. You just want everyone to let you get to it on your own and the idea of being touched or interfered with is uncomfortable and panicking. Plus the bit at the end where others hear the thoughts depression gives you and they're told how futile anything else is and they all just give in is well is fucking genius. The idea that you can't know why depression effects them until you're hit by it like seriously this is incredible.
@assmane9999 жыл бұрын
+crissy4445 I respect your interpretation of it. It is an ambiguous, somewhat surreal video, so it is open to multiple interpretations. The way I see it, he his aware of a very disturbing truth about existence: the nature of which would automatically destroy a person's psyche if they learned what it was. The whole point of the video is about our insatiable curiosity. The characters in the video, and even us, watching the video, want to know badly why he is lying down, even though we know that it might have grave consequences for us to know. There's some things in this universe we are just not meant to know. What I think is brilliant about this video, is how we become like the guy yelling at the man to tell him whats wrong. People have been frustrated by this videos for 20 years because the secret is not revealed to them. btw: the reason I am not convinced by your take on it is: depression is very personal. When a depressed person reveals what's bothering them, it very rarely bothers the person hearing it. Also, you say that "they're told how futile everything else is and they just give in".....but the guy asks the man if he's lying there because there's no point in living, and the man says that's not it. So, it;s not because of the futility of it all. It's supposed to suggest something more metaphysical than that. Something beyond our understanding.
@assmane9999 жыл бұрын
crissy4445 Yeah, I guess you could see it that way. It's just that I think the themes have more to do with our need to know everything about existence and the universe, where as your interpretation is more about depression. But, i can see how both our interpretations converge.
@craigjones85588 жыл бұрын
+crissy4445 Depression has a hidden negative affect on those not directly suffering from it. drags everyone down, how could he possibly stop that from happening.. I agree though, plenty of interpretations. Thanks for the comments and conversation. Awesome artists

Geeeez, I remember this when I was deep in the pit of my depression. I like this song so much. I feel it so much I can’t express in words. Radiohead is such a great band. Depression and mental illness is a tough battle, don’t give up guys. Keep pushing on and keep fighting. There’s beauty in this world, there’s purpose for you. God Bless, and may the peace of Christ dwell within you.

I think that man said " if you want to have a free Radiohead's concert you should lie down"
@ThiefOfBaghdad4 жыл бұрын
in an interview, the director of this video, Jamie Thraves - was asked about what the man was saying at the end.... "I haven’t told anyone in 25 years. I had no idea the video was going to cause so many people to ask what the man said, I really didn’t. At the time, I simply felt I had no choice but to subtract what was said, it created the magic. To reveal the answer would kill the video. There’s a very real logical and simple answer though, a concept, however - no matter how good the idea is, it will always disappoint someone if revealed. I’ve told a few close people things over the years. Sometimes I’m very tempted to go online under a pseudonym on KZbin and plant the exact truth amongst all the conjecture. Perhaps I’ve done that already. Look, I’m getting on a bit now. I’m considering telling my two sons, Thomas and Harvey, 15 and 12, to pass on the secret, to keep the family secret alive, but to be honest, it’s quite a burden. To be constantly asked and have to say “No, sorry, can’t tell you.” So I’m not sure I really want to pass that onto my kids. I will probably take the answer to my grave, unless a rich billionaire Radiohead fan wants to buy the secret from me. I might actually seriously consider that, but it would cost them a fucking hell of a lot of money, and they’d still need to sign a contract to keep the secret. I do actually want to reveal the answer, you see, that’s why it’s been a strange burden and yet also wonderful to be the only person who knows. It’s like I stumbled upon the answer to the universe, perhaps I did. Please don’t make me tell you. You don’t want to know."

This really is one of the most brilliant music videos ever made. It highlights the way people can never mind their own business. He is fine, he says he's fine, yet every one has to get into his business. Soon they can't stand the fact that he won't tell them what is wrong. They would probably resort to violence sooner or later to beat it out of this guy why he is laying there. Hundreds if not thousands of people might show up. People would take sides. One would say leave him alone. The other would think it was important to find out why he was there. Soon a fight, maybe a riot, people die, a War gets started. All this because people can not mind their own business! Great video.

People also criticize those who won't go above and beyond to help. Look at all the people who just walk by and don't say anything. The context. One video can be about just that. People walking by and minding their own business. And all you would criticize them for doing so. That's the funny part. Most of us pretend like we all have the answer and would do the right thing. The camera pans away the 3rd time he says it, so you really only see him say "I'll tell you why" twice, but the guitar solo leaves enough space suggesting he fit the phrase in 3 times. I figure it has some kind of deep symbolic meaning where repeating something 3 times releases some kind of chaos. Not unlike saying "BEETLEJUICE" 3 times.

A couple of years ago I went through a depression that almost killed me, I had a friend who would visit me and he always did the things that I liked and accompanied me to feel better, I remember that we were in the living room of my house sitting on the floor making some drawings and I put RADIOHEAD on, in each song I explained the video or translated the lyrics. I put "Just" and I said: that's just how I feel, like that guy. Months before, he traveled to another city to visit me because I had moved, and the last day I was in that city we heard "Lift" and that song is so comforting and special to me, because that day was the last one I spent in that city that I felt like I was entering the gates of hell. I just want to tell you that if you are going through any emotional or physical problem, cheer up, do not stop fighting for your lives even if you feel that there is no reason to continue here.

I have a friend who one day in class went off a rant about his feelings on life and how he doesn’t see a point of it all, school and working and the such. My teacher rebuttaled with in my opinion, good points such as, there are more things to this world than school and working in system like exploring the world and experiencing miracles of a life being born. But nothing connected to my friend and he digged deeper into his nihilistic feelings until all that was left and came of it was an awkward and somber atmosphere. Listening and watching this video kinda reminded me of the situation and has me thinking there are some things that for some people cannot be reasoned or helped with and good altruistic samaritans with intentions of helping like in the video will just carry the same burden with the knowledge the man passes on.
