Did you know that the original theme, so the first version, was not done on synthesizers at all but through recording, and splicing bits of tape. The original bass sound was actaully a twanged metal ruler. ThatTardis sound was a piano frame with the strings still attached to it brushed with a metal object. They still haven't been able to improve on that one.

Yes, it was incredible. Delia would say "Ok, we're going to need 64 B flats" and then record 64 notes, cut them out individually and stick them onto the tape.

This theme tune is imprinted into my childhood brain , kind of a signature of the 80s to me. hearing it takes me right back ! Now I have virtual versions of these synths, so can try and make it myself.

Have you settled on the right vst for the job? I'm starting my exploration now and trying to get the bass to work with Arturia DX-7 and the "whistle" part using the KORG ARP Odyssey. For me, it's the 4th Doctor or nothing.
Yeah where is Derbyshire?....this is back when the bbc had money and original ideas.

She did all the hard work using tape loops and found sound before the days of synthesizers and got little credit for it until it was flagged up. She was an absolute musical and technicl genius.

0:46 ------ that one was done excellently.They used excellent sounds ---- and arranged it very nicely ---- as in they didn't get over-fancy with the oscillators - which some people are tempted to do - and this is what happened with some later versions - where they decided to tack on bits that get into the cheesy category. Interesting - but cheesy. The 0:46 one is classy.

6:50 The Peter Howell version is by far the best. Within the first 2 seconds you are hooked. The hair and your arms stand straight up on end and you have goosebumps all over your body.. Absolutely awesome.

Delia Derbyshire's original version is the best. Totally original and will never sound dated as there isn't a synth in sight to link it to a particular time. Of the other versions, Peter Howell's version is the next best but the big problem with using synth technology of that time is that it then sounds of its time. Wonderful use of CS80, Arp Odyssey and Jupiter 4 though. The worst version is Keff McCulloch's version which has dated terribly; unbelievably, he used a Prophet 5, which is such a wonderful synth, but the result is awful.
@funkmasters2 жыл бұрын

@unclemick-synths2 жыл бұрын
@@tsmith7146 yep the original was the best. There's some really cheesy sounds on this one - and I thought that at the time. They were screwing with Dr Who in so many ways - the gossip was Michael Grade wasn't a fan and resented its enduring success. My theory was he got scared as a kid - he should have watched from behind the sofa like the rest of us! 😀

Ah, now I know why people name these synths as being on the Dr Who theme - it's the re-recorded one. Old farts like me remember the original theme that was recorded well before these synths existed. Davison was a mistake - too well identified as Tristan Farnon so we kept expecting the TARDIS to be filled with pregnant ewes! 🙄
@BaddaBigBoom Жыл бұрын
Totally agree, typecast as Tristan. I lost interest the first time round after Tom Baker. After Ron Grainer composed the theme, Delia Derbyshire did all the hard work using tape loops and found sound but RG got the credit. Delia Derbyshire was a musical and technological genius sadly her affinity with the demon drink caught up with her and she died before her time.

Yup. I am a great synthesizer fan and own a few but Delia Derbyshire constructed the theme using found sound, tape loops and a hell of a lot of splicing, speed adjusting and hard work.

@@docdelete I agree w/ Doc Delete here, Every single Time Lord have the possibility of regenerating into the other gender, think of how Harold Saxon became Missy, or how the Galifreyan Commander regenerated into women, then man, and then a woman again. Or the fact that the Doctor's female incarnation was discussed in 1986, when they were trying to up the viewership of the Season 25-27. I don't hate the fact that the Thirteenth Doctor is played by a woman, I hate the scripts. I want more depth in the Fourteenth...

Dude this video was about the development of a doctor who theme. What's the fucking point in trying to connect this to the 13th doctor, and you're politically charged stance.
