You have to put the 50ohm feed point higher to have a better swr

Hi Gil - try moving the feed point to optimise the SWR match. Use sliding bracketry to find this point before redrilling!

using a centre punch will keep the drill start point accurate and in place
@DonDegidio
@DonDegidio 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Gil, Since you make many projects, get a set of center drills that are used with lathes. They are extremely rigid and use them to make a dimple before using your drill bit. Enjoyed the video. 73 WB3BJU

Neither the take off angle nor gain you give is accurate or meaningful. The Slim Jim actually has less gain than a J-pole, which is not that reliable a pattern to start with.

Excellent video....Thank you for that....When you say RF choke do you mean a balun? if so, what value? 1:1? thank you sir and thumbs up.
@RadioPrepper
@RadioPrepper 5 жыл бұрын
Just a bunch of toroid cores on the cable as seen in the video, of coiling the coax on a plastic cylinder. You could use a 1:1 balun I guess..

Theo T You can make an RF choke by using a stack of ferrite beads on the outside jacket of the coaxial cable being used. WB3BJU

Your statements about radiation angle and gain are not correct. The Slim Jim does not have a lower take off or radiation angle. If anything a Slim Jim has a lower gain than a J-pole. Neither antenna is a very good choice for an antenna. A Ground plane makes a more reliable antenna.
@RadioPrepper
@RadioPrepper 5 жыл бұрын
There is lots of debate about that... Do you have links I can check out?

@@RadioPrepper, I have simulations that I ran. I can send you the files. The radiation or take off angle are the same, they should be, they are both the same length.

That looks so easy to build! I tend to have issues getting my roll up slim Jim's to resonate so I am gun shy about manufacturing one of these.

I'd probably make one from half inch copper pipe, There is this really easy solder to use, quick solder paste, can solder all joints and connections with it. I just use a food torch, it works with minimal heat. In reverse as well so you can just heat it back up and move/re-adjust things without hassle of regular solder. Also, personally I prefer to go with BNC as so239/pl259 commonly used yet not actually rated for 2 meter on antenna side with whatever proper matching connection on other... Then shine her up nice and slap a coat of clear coat so it does not oxidize. =)
