4:12 isn’t that a case of local buckling?? I mean if I’m standing on a coin, then no matter how much weight I put on it will never buckle like that. So I don’t get the short column thing later in the video. I find it strange that the wall thickness is not included somehow? BR Peter

@fandennis I'm afraid not. The important thing about buckling is that the structure can fail even though the material is below yield stress. Imagine a long, thin metal rod like a piece of brass brazing rod. Say L=1000mm and D=2mm. It would be very easy to get it to buckle. The load would be very low - far below yield stess.

In dynamics can the radius of gyration ever be zero, if MOI exists and is non zero around an axis. For exa, if I assume the entire mass is located at the axis itself.

In strength of materials the radius of gyration is the resistance of a cross section to rotate over an axis
@nellvincervantes3223
@nellvincervantes3223 4 жыл бұрын
If you draw the equivalent system for the section, the area will be concentrated at radius of gyration from axis of rotation of buckling just like in the dynamics where the mass is concentrated at radius of gyration from axis of rotation. The concentrated area become strip with same moment of inertia as original system. Imagine if you apply a load on this concentrated area, and when you apply the Double Integration Method for deformation of this column with concentrated strip area due to buckling, the deformation will become lower as you go farther from the axis of rotation or as you increase the radius of gyration. Maybe im wrong.

I did the same thing for a can crusher project and came up with a ridiculously large number too. Professor said it was not right because another team concluded that 200 lbf is the amount a coke can needs to be subjected to to be "squashed" and I still don't know how to reconcile the two results and why one is significantly larger than the other...

Could we have just calculated the beam for buckling assuming "long" and at the end checked if Pcr/A was greater than Sigma(Y) to decide whether it would be long or short?

Some things just take as being true. If you take every formula from the code and try and find out where it came from it would do your head in. Its just an equation derived from 1st principles. It doesnt really have a meaning, just gives us a number that tells us somthing. Bit like second moment of area. It only is a number that can tells us where most of the cross sectional area is at some distance from the neutral axis. Its how we use those numbers that matters.
@adammau8504
@adammau8504 6 жыл бұрын
Noah Clanton all im saying is that you should be able to derive the equation and know where it comes from but when it comes to actually meening somthing well....its just a way of puting somthing in terms of one number to describe somthing. Obviously not all are like this

purdueMET Why not simply use the ratio of column length and column width, then make the conclusion that it is a long column? (say if L/w >1 (or some known constant), then long, if L/w
