They provide alot of info but dont take the time to go in depth like you do. Just watching your video anyone could rebuild this thanks to your teachings. I have my rx8 engine out and apart only to find the housings are pretty bad off due to chatter and chrome chip off. But once i find good ones i will definitely be watching this video multiple times

I wonder why Mazda never went to MLS type gaskets in place of rubber seals. Especially when they are exposed to so much heat. I’m definitely saving this video for when I rebuild the 13B-MSP. I know there are differences, but generally should be very similar.

I plan to buy a rotary powered vehicle soon, either a 1980's RX7 or really any year RX8. Your videos along with CarThrottle's "Living with a Rotary series" (UK KZbinrs), have really helped me understand how these engines work and what sort of maintenance I need to expect and even how to completely rebuild an engine if need be. I greatly appreciate the time you take making these videos and taking your time explaining things. I was wondering if you might have some input on which car I should buy. I'm mostly worried about being able to source parts for either engine.

Im concerned about finding 12a engines and parts if I get an fb. I am not wanting to swap it but there isnt much out there for the 12a engine parts wise. Am I wrong? Why isnt there an insert or something to save those old housing. Mr rad potential engineer sir, I see potential for a rotary engine parts company. Then branch off to plastics and remake interior stuff for old jdm cars. Nissans hondas toyotas mazdas molded plastic interior parts and engine components for the boys❤

Did you rub any oil on the inside of the housings and on the irons? I didn’t catch it in the video. Just wondering if the apex seals and oil control rings are a little dry adding to the resistance. Good video by the way!
@RADPotential2 жыл бұрын
I typically don't put any excessive amounts of oil in the engine during assembly. I'm thinking that is a contributing factor accompanied with the brand new oil control springs and metal rings

24:03 I like that Rob Dahm tortures himself and tries to install those before putting the rotor in the housing I think i would still put the dowels first just for me so i know I'm not screwing up my coolant/oil gasket i haven't done this before and very nice hot start RX8 keeping coming up There is one right now for 3k from the original owner and its yellow with 66,000 miles on it and a hot start issue. Stuff like that in that price range pops up constantly, very very clean cars just rotary issues and regular people are scared so good for me That could be a steal or a catastrophe and needs new housing but i cant see that from the outside

Just finished my 12a rebuild a couple days ago! Videos like yours are so helpful, and it was reassuring to see this and have another confirmation that I probably didn't screw it up! Lots of compression in mine with spark plugs in, big chugs and wooshes - I figured that was a good sign. Do you think too much can be harmful or a sign that things didn't go together appropriately? Probably need to get a compression tester and see for myself. Hanging out for your vid on that! Cheers mate, from Australia.

Great timing, just ordered my master rebuild kit from Atkins. My 13B has about 60k on rebuild from mazdatrix in cali but previous owner autocrossed it for 9 years. Rather do it early instead of a catastrophic failure.

@@RADPotential the thing runs beautifully but it's smoking a fair amount. It's definitely oil. I did a omp delete and I'm consuming a crap load of oil. Not leaking anywhere. I always park in the exact same same spot in my driveway and no spots other than coolant. Radiator is leaking. Smokes more while going down a hill in gear and not using the throttle. Not a smoke screen but definitely more than 2 stroke oil.

Thanks, I've never dismantled an engine let alone a rotary engine. If I can't free it up, will it even come apart? Also, it's out of the car so what do you recommend I secure it with? These questions probably seem pretty juvenile to you but are major issues for me. Thanks again for your feedback. I'm impressed with your knowledge and craftsmanship on the cars we love!
@RADPotential2 жыл бұрын
If it's just on the ground, try strapping it to something, maybe a long board so it won't rotate. Or even if you and a buddy just hang on to it tight. If it won't free up, just start taking it apart. All the small stuff will be pretty stuck. There is a disassembly video on the channel if you can't figure it out!!

I have a rx8 with relatively low compression, still runs but struggles to start hot. Unfortunately due to a new house project i have to delay the rebuild for now. But i was thinking since im on a real budget atm, if i take the msp apart and put it back together with new seals and gaskets, would it increase the compression? (assuming the housings and iron’s within spec) I mean just for learning purposes it would be beneficial for me but not sure it’s the right thing to do for the engine. Great Vid btw shout out from the UK 😉

Thanks for sharing your build process. I've watched lots of them. All but one do the apex seals like you. I watched one guy who held the seals in with a big rubber band, started the housing on then clipped the band once the housing was holding the seals and dropped the housing home. Your thoughts on such a technique?
@RADPotential2 жыл бұрын
I think that's a great way to do it!! As long as you know none of the seals on the back of the rotor fall out. That really why I like to place the rotors before the housings.
@ScottJ1752 жыл бұрын
He still placed rotor first. Just had the apexes held with that rubber band.

You ever think about putting an intro into to your videos with music and also outro at the end?
