Vivid portraits of old people from the Slovak regions of Liptov and Orava, who live in inner freedom despite the surrounding civilizational chaos. Inspired by the photographs of Martin Martinček, Dušan Hanák used his genuine sensitivity in his portrayal of his truly unique characters, their original attitudes to life, and their admirable innocence.
Dusan Hanak’s Pictures of the Old World (Obrazy stareho sveta, 1972) was unacceptable to the Communist censorship because it allegedly depicted socialist Slovakia quite unsuitably as an "ugly" country full of poor and old people. It was the Communist Minister of Culture - the poet Miroslav Valek, who finally saved this film from complete elimination and who supposedly also came up with the title of the film in order to at least partially divert the attention of the censors and to direct the effect of the film from the current to the "old" world.
*One of the most famous documentaries from the golden era of Slovak cinema.

"Toto sú príbehy ľudí,
ktorí ostali sami sebou.
Zabudnutí a prostí,
vrastení do zeme, z ktorej vyšli.
Nemožno ich presadiť
pretože by zahynuli."
"These are stories of people
Rooted in the soil they came from
They cannot be replanted.
They would perish."
Enjoy! (unfortunately i wasn't able to upload the subtitles)
