How to make a pan flute

About 12 hours of work in 15 min. This is how I built a sopranino flute and also played on it at the end.

I built a pan flute (22 voices) 20 years ago, but it was never finished. The mood is still missing. I just have to repair it now because it has suffered a bit after so long. For me, the pan flute is still the most beautiful instrument on earth in terms of sound. 😊 You inspired me again to start this project again. I thank you for this.👍

Ce mică-i lumea! Câtă muncă până la cântec! Și vorbim numai de ,,nașterea" instrumentului! Rezultatul e admirabil, atât estetic, cât și funcțional, după cum ,,se aude". Ascult muzică de aproape 70 de ani, iubesc naiul datorită maestrului Zamfir, am văzut cum se construiesc destule instrumente; filmul realizării e deosebit, pe măsura muncii constructorului. Felicitări, a fost o bucurie să văd cum se face!

Making an authentic, concert quality Pan Flute is not as simple as it looks. It is very labor intensive, and a lot of precision joinery and carpentry work is required. Just about anybody can throw something together that plays, but making a professional, concert quality instrument is a different matter, and is not so easy. I made and played the Romanian style Pan Flute for many years, and I used only the highest quality bamboo imported from China. Tonkin bamboo (Arundinaria amabilis McClure) is probably the most preferred and commonly used species of bamboo, but also you can use white or Moso bamboo (Phyllostachys bambusoides); My favorite species of bamboo was Black Bamboo (Phyllostachys nigra) which has a very sweet and sonorous tone; they say that it was the favorite variety of bamboo preferred by Fanica Luca, the grandfather of the Pan Flute, and the uncle of my main teacher, Damian Luca. Golden Bamboo (Phyllostachys aurea) also has a very sweet and sonorous tone, and is preferred by a Romanian pan flutist friend of mine for making his instruments, which he sometimes sells on E-Bay.
