RAF Emergency set with Austin K2 Ambulance and K6 fire tender (Airfix 1/72 scale model)

Airfix's classic (going back to 1969!) RAF Emergency Set, featuring the Austin K2 Ambulance and the K6 fire tender, plus a very interesting set of figures. In this video I build and paint the vehicles - in a future one I will create a small diorama where I can put the firefighters to work.

Hi. I have this kit, I have already built the Bedford but I found out that it did not see service until just after the war. But I converted mine into a tractor unit instead. The 'Katy' awaits my attention. Those front wheels look very close to the wheel arches so I might have to put some plastic shims on the chassis to create a bit more clearance. The colour looks good though. Nice build.

Thank you Brian. Are you certain that the Bedford wasn't used during the war? I found a few pictures of very similar vehicles during war time service but admittedly nothing identical. This kit would be a great candidate for a re-tool.

I remember building that kit along with the Bofors AA gun kits to make an impossibly large Airfield Diorama along with the Control Tower etc. It took my 3 brothers and I a while to get it just right. Until one fateful day our sister let our German Shepherd into our large attic bedroom where it savaged our diorama

Hi. Yes I did check on the bedford k6. It apparently saw service after the war as a fire tender. Even the morris k2 did not see service in europe until late 1943 and into 1944. So the picture on the box art is completely inaccurate. The vehicle colours are a bit dubious. Your colour on the Morris is more accurate. Thats why when I built the Bedford I turned into a tractor unit and hooked it up to the Queen Mary trailer. I blanked offthe hole in the roof but kept the original mudguards ( I liked them more than the metal plate versions ). I cut off the box on top of the mudguard to create a smooth finish. The fifth wheel came off of the Bedford Ox. So quite a bit of work but it looks better pulling the trailer. I had to cut out the tow pintle on the trailer and move it forward by its own length so that it would clear the mudguards on the tractor unit.I still think that your build is good and your colours are more accurate. Plenty of eBay - sometimes they go for silly prices (especially in the older boxings), but you can still get bargains. I'm a bit surprised Airfix haven't done this as a Vintage Classic release.

Hi. Yes I totally agree that Airfix should re-tool this kit and also the other 1/76 kits in their range. There will always be old guys (like me ) who will always make these kits as there is no alternative. Interesting kits but showing their age. If they were re-done you bet your bottom dollar there price will go through the roof. I can remember as a kid these kits going for less than a fiver, they would probably be nearer twenty nowadays if not more. Airfix should also do what Matchbox used to do and include a diorama, I have never understood why Airfix or Revell have never done a seperate range of dioramas for their small scale range. What do you think about that ? Maybe make them so that some of them could be joined together to create a bigger diorama. Best of luck.

Paint tyre's and hubs while on sprue so much easier back in the day of Airfix enamels it was dry before you finished the build even if you rushed it could do a Lanc in 4 hours Britfix 77 was the glue of choice

Thanks. Sometimes I do that, sometimes the sprue connectors are in annoying places that would mean a touch up would be required :)

Very nice set, had this as a kid. The green firtetender turns out awesome. Only the roodecal on the ambulance looks ugly. Why not cutting the rough edges off ?

Thank you mate. Yes, I do! I have the Tamiya 312T3 and the Fujimi F87. I also have the Fujimi 2003 GA which I originally bought to do a conversion to the Sauber C23, but then I could never find the decals for it!

Remember this in 1/76th... So have Airfix rebranded as 1/72nd and redone the moulds, or did Airfix screw up all those years ago??

I think they've just rebranded the kit, yes. For a 2 metre subject the difference would only be about 1.5mm so they've probably treated them as essentially the same.

I suspect it's the same tool, although it has variously been labelled as 1/76, 1/72, and HO.

As a 10-year-old nose dribbler, I remember my disappointment when out of the box I only got 2 tiny models. I also remember my disappointment at the tiger moth melting into a messy blob when I added some extra realism & set fire to it.

They are quite small. The figures are unique though. Although the firefighters in the asbestos suits look quite relaxed.
