A touch of nostalgia. I did this kit when I was around 10 when it was released the first time. Matchbox was the only brand I knew in my small town where kits were sold in the single toys shop. I painted all my kits with Humbrol glossy colors only because there was nothing else. It took me a while to understand what was a matt color and to buy my first one. Then, 2-3 years after, this shop proposed the Monogram P61 Black Widow. It took me mostly a year to get the money to buy it. Scissors, 3M Scotch glue in tube, 3 brushes, a cup of white spirit and my mother nail files, that was my setup. No filler, no masking, no nothing. Thank you for this souvenir.

Lovely work! I've just come across your channel. It's tough working in this small scale. Out-of-the-bottle paint can easily overpower the detail but you've provided a clinic in using acrylic washes. Bravo! In fact, I don't think you've added enough colour and definition to the base, though I admit that weather and neglect would have toned everything down. The heavy Chev doesn't have enough gear in back, though much would be covered by a tarp. And there is almost no personal gear at all and these troopers' mission would be weeks long. Congratulations on bringing out the best this kit could offer.

Matchbox kits were my entry into the hobby as a 8-9 year old. I tried unsuccessfully to get my mother to buy me one of their aircraft kits until I picked up a very bad dose of tonsillitis that kept me off school for over a week. “Winterbottoms” our local newsagent stocked Matchbox and Airfix kits and the paints etc and when she was heading into the village for some groceries I mentioned that this weeks copy of ‘Whizzer & Chips’ might be in, and I hinted about a kit “to give me something to do”. Well, she came back with the latest copy of my favourite comic and the 1/72 Trop version of the Mk.II Hurricane by Matchbox. And that was it. Happy memories, except for the tonsillitis of course. Great build Greg, yet more magic. All the best.👍🏻

Great piece of work. My dad was in the desert in WW2 and he would often (when he'd had a couple of pints that is) talk about his time out there. He told me about how those 'Chevvies' and sometimes Bedfords would arrive and how they were cut down ready for their desert excursions. He said there were never two alike and each one was customised by its crew. Another thing he said was sometimes some of them were painted pink! For me, as a lad, the Western Desert became my favourite subject to model. I still have from many years ago a 1/35th K2 ambulance that I scratch built mainly because nobody at the time manufactured a model of one. I built this matchbox kit several times. Thanks for the video and the memories.

Mate, this kit is utterly unobtainium in 2023. I made it as a kid, it was a gem. One of the Matchbox die cast car catalogues had a spread depicting the LRDG set alongside the Diamond T tank transporter, carrying a Honey. It was that image that resulted in my departing die cast cars and getting into model making.
Had this kit as a 10 year old, the year it came out. A real trip down memory lane. And you made a lovely job of it. Thank you.

Nice one Greg. I bloody-love this model. As a kid, I built several, thinking they would work well for Table-Top Wargaming. The finished vehicles look great. The build was a little more challenging than most. Matchbox never made it easy, as parts would break as one tried to get them free from the sprue. That's a real beauty! 👍 Back when I was a youngster, when these Matchbox kits first came out they were almost a revelation over the 'usual' Airfix, Revell, and Frog kits. The two or three colour plastic was always a nice touch if you didn't want to paint it, and the mini diorama bases with their AFVs were fantastic; they really gave the model some 'life', rather than just a small tank sat on a plain shelf...! 😉 You've done a great job with this one..... ☝ 🙂

It never ceases to amaze me how skillful painting can transform pieces of plastic into realistic looking metal, wood, and other materials. The color of the diorama base is a bit too light, IMHO, but then again it helps make the models pop up more. I've always had a soft spot for Matchbox kits. I've never actually built any of them, though. I was just a wee little kid during their heydays (this particular one is only slightly younger than I am!), and they weren't generally available in my little corner of the world. Great job, please give us more!

Very nice..... You did that justice 👌🏻 Aaaah, Matchbox. I grew up with these as an alternative to Airfix. Silly colours, chunky, often soft detail and panel lines you needed a bridging kit for, but who cared? I loved 'em and, occasionally, I still build them out of nostalgia.
