My Grandad worked there when the 'dump went up'. He worked in nearby Tutbury as a glass cutter at Webb and Corbett before working at Fauld. He was part of the Home Guard at the Dump. Luckily he was working in the offices at the time of the explosion. He even appeared in a documentary in about 1967 about the Fauld explosion. Also his uncle Eli Bell was in the 1881 Census as a blaster at the plaster pit which preceded the bomb store. My Dad, as a child, used to roll rocks down the edge of the Crater. There were only about 4,000 tons of unexploded bombs under the crater.

Living in Burton-on-Trent, my parents and grandparents talked about the explosion, it broke windows and blew off roof tiles in Burton.

I used to live at the cock inn, that got blown down and rebuilt. Awesome place hanbury. Never been in though..

There was another explosion at the port Chicago weapons yard in the California Bay Area during ww2 that killed a lot of people that worked there. It’s an interesting story.

Flixborough happened in my youth in about 1972 near Scunthorpe. Later I became a teacher and a fellow teacher was married to a Flixborough survivor and I had the impression that the experience had so affected him he could not work. I believe a release of cyclo-hexane caused the explosion in this case. I grew up about twenty miles at Gainsborough which is ironic because my dad grew up near Tutbury within walking distance of the crater.
