In the early 2000's when they refurbed the building, with work I had to visit the site, the PSA architect in charge of the returb showed me around the control room. Those outside walls at the end of the clip are blast walls, the small blast doors on the walls were emergency escape hatches the inside were round with a bar to pull yourself through. If they went into lockdown in the building, orders were past by sentry guards through hatches in the security doors alone the corridors, the combination doors were all in place. The desks and the map wall were still there at the time and all the clock times signs were in place with slide in boards with city names. I though it was going to be all high tech like in the movies, but it was all very normal and low tech. Another interesting part is the main building housing the data centre now, that was offices but the cladding had water pipes running all through it, creating white noise to prevent spy listening devices from outside hearing what was going on in that part of the building. Much of GCAFB has to remain intact for site inspections by the Russians as part of the nuclear arms limitation agreements, thats why much of the site still exists and has not been demolished.

Always wondered how this place looked, a truly frightening time growing up with only newspapers telling us how much russia wanted to start a war, we lived in fear of the unknown, but not anymore, great triptych of video's chaps, look forward to more of this! 👏🏻

Strange seeing these facilities. Where I worked the idea was to keep the radioactivity and contamination from getting out. Here, they are keeping the rads and contamination from getting in! Great job, fellows!

Just finished watching and glad you got to the "support" bunker also. The third more elusive Cruise Missile Bunker yet awaits us all.... This was amazing but did I msis something or was there meant to be a command room at the end of this visit.

This all looks like what's at Upper Heyford in Oxfordshire Which was also a American airbase and there tours around the base . Won't be around much longer the new Village of Upper Heyford village is quickly taking over and the runways are storage for thousands of cars. Great video guys.

There was a room at the end of the corridor that had the bombing charts and was the actual control room ( further videos from ITV meridian news) all the interesting stuff had been chucked into skips before Greenham trust got to protect them.

Those external hinges look like a poor design choice. All you need to do is undo the nuts and you could pry the door open past the bolts until it fell off from its own weight.
@michaelthomas3105
@michaelthomas3105 5 жыл бұрын
They should have put welds on the nuts after the doors were fitted. That's what they often do on the doors of utilities bunkers that are of the bolted on hinge design, not the Swiss all cast in types. Quick & simple. I weld the big 38mm nuts on the outside of Swiss doors so intruders with a big wrench couldn't open the doors off.
