My first posting in the RAF Sept '72 - Apr '74 when it closed as a radar station. Happy days.

My job in the R.Sigs would have been in a local Authority bunker doing comm's by radio, phone, teleprinter etc. and setting up relay stations on hills after the blast!

I lived in a Police house back in the 80's and part of my job would have been to take a WW2 hand cranked air raid siren out into the garden and wind it up in the event of an attack warning red. Would I have? no I would have gone inside and said goodbye to my kids, frightening times.

Glad you went here, it's changed slightly last time I visited a couple of years ago, i.e. the bar, Area 7 which has a new interesting exhibit and poses lots of interesting questions lol but yeah great film, Thanks for that mate =)

I found it very interesting. I didn't document the Royal Observer Corps section of the bunker though as I spent over an hour talking to an ex ROC member in there named Ted.

Yes I visited the ROTOR station at Bempton years ago. The bunker is inaccessible though now. Thanks for watching.

I wonder why the UK Blast doors in these bunkers seem like nothing more that a sheet of thick steel plate where as others like in the US are simular to a bank Vault and about a metre thick arn't they supposed to do the same job?

I assume that the reason whould be this is a early warning site so while it whould be a target the the chances of them being a direct target is slim. The actual silos now whould be a direct target so thus were built stronger

Fall out is the least of your problems. It's the gama rays that will kill you during the explosion. As long as you don't injest or inhale the Beta particulates( fall out) you will be OK.

There was never bar inside when this site was operational, it was installed by the current owners. Sadly like most Cold War museums in the UK they are liberal with the truth.

Actually there was a bar and recreation room in the bunker until 1974 when it was stripped out. facebook.com/visitthebunker/photos/a.872438616128924.1073741827.872435399462579/1174429232596526/?type=3&theater

You know they tell you all that bullshit but if it's not really right if you're in a secured area you don't have to worry about it I don't know how it is over there where you guys are but in the United States is more secure..
