Went through there four times while stationed at RAF Bentwaters / Woodbridge. I was with the 67th Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Squadron, 1972-1974, we nicknamed RAF Mildenhall, RAF Moldyhole back then. All in good fun and teasing each other. I think they called us Crookedcreek,

I used to fly in and out of Mildenhall back in the 70's with USAF EC-121's, and it was easy to imagine, with the brick buildings covered with greenery growing up the sides, a time just a short 30 years earlier, when to many young men were flying and dying over the skies of Germany. The spirit of all those young men, American and British and all of her allies, still walked the streets and drank in the base clubs, ate in the mess and flew out out of the airfield and into eternity. To this day, I can remember the feeling of their spirits as I took to the skies, and I thank God for everything those brave heroes of old did in the name of peace. And I am forever grateful for our allies Great Britain... to the little mother, from her big son.

My mother worked for the American Red Cross based in Bath and Bristol in the UK during WW2 . She was English born in Bath . One of her enduring memories was of the Yanks ( as she called them ) freshly arriving from the US before D- Day all young and full of enthusiasm and then later as the wounded started to come from France , many terribly wounded .

That C-130 is a C-130H3 flown by the Minnesota Air Reserve. It differs from the C-130H in that it has an 8 bladed propeller rather than a 4-blade propeller.

I visited or passed thru this base a few times during my service years from 1975-81. Really good and classy mess hall, of particular note. (Air Force had the best dining facilities, at least vs. U.S. Army.) Wouldn't have minded being stationed there if I had been in the Air Force, although I would have more preferred someplace like RAF Greenham Common further southwest (was there for a training exercise in 1976, plus RAF Sculthorpe in 1978; didn't care for Sculthorpe nearly as much.) Anyway, I wonder if that little English cafe is still just inside the main entrance to Mildenhall, if anyone knows. It was so distinctive located at that spot.
@leonard41012 жыл бұрын
Right there at the gate of Mildenhall before you go in? Kind of sitting in an odd area for a pub or cafe I never went in there my ex-wife was stationed at Mildenhall from 1990-1992 and the pub was still open. I was retired from the AF by then so I was following her around and taking care of the kids....lol (fun) :)
@HRHolm-bi6zu2 жыл бұрын
@@leonard4101 I could have sworn it was just inside the main gate, its own standalone building. Looked kind of like one of those old-style American highway diners from the 1930s-40s, actually. But it was a civilian Brit place. You know, time fades many memory details, and it's been 40+ years now since I passed thru the base. It was not a 'pub' per se, though. I can't remember specifically about the type of fare served, either. But at the time I thought it was OK for what it appeared to be. But again, those Air Force mess halls, serving those 'midnight chow' breakfasts, too. I shoulda gone Air Force.

@@HRHolm-bi6zu Yea that area wasn't like most AF bases where everything is inside the main fence of the base....at Mildenhall the operations function of the base was fenced in, even the gas station was on the inside but the BX, Commissary, Hospital and housing and the club, etc... was open on the outside. We lived at Lakenheath housing off base, moved from Thetford and drove to Mildenhall it was a nice assignment but her assignment was cut short wish we could have stayed longer I got tired of moving...... cheers :)

I don't live far from McGuire in Toms River, NJ. I frequently see C-17's and probably that jet flying over my home, getting ready to land or flying over the pond. Was stationed at Rhein Main AB from 77-80 and in the USAF from 75 to 1980.

Most activity is the RC-135 Rivet Joint Elint (electronic gathering aircraft which patrol to the west of Belorussia and south of Ukraine borders, in conjunction with RAF Rivet Joints from RAF Waddington. KC-135 and KC-10 tankers support them as well as supporting local NATO fighter units deployed to the Baltic states and Romania.

@@popovoleg70 No fighters are based at Muldenhall. The nearby Lakenheath base of the 48th TFW has 3 squadrons of F-15S/E models with an F-35 squadron currently being added. Germany (A-10's), that is the total of USAF combat aircraft in Europe currently.
