My mother made Mosquito's at de Havilland's, Hatfield. For training she made a wooden toolbox with dovetail corners.

The 57-mm gun also proved useful in air-to-air combat, when a 618 Squadron Mosquito attacked a U-boat in the Bay of Biscay. As it was climbing away it caught up to one of the escorting Ju-88s. The Mosquito fired four shots at the Junkers and knocked an engine completely off the aircraft. This incident is related in "A Most Secret Squadron" by Des Curtis.

A 6lb 57mm Auto Cannon, plus 4 x 20mm Hispano Cannons and 8 RP-3 Unguided Rockets on pylons under the wings, and all in a wooden aircraft build by carpenters, by cabinet and piano makers, awesome 😎 🏴🇬🇧

This film is about the Banff Strike Wing. The Airfild is Dyce, near Banff. There was another airfield at Dallachy, near the mouth of the river Spey. This field had Bristol Beaufighters fitted first with torpedoes and then with the 3in rockets. This Strike Wing was used to attack Norwegian boats carrying iron to Germany. This was sanctioned by the Norwegians.

There was a trial on the beufighter that had two vickers 40mm S guns in its nose?...imagine that?? a whole bunch of 80mm hitting the wheel house of your vessel in quick succession whilst its steaming along with its taps fully opened...

Beaufighter had 4 20mm canon and 6 machine in the wings so I'm sure the 40s wouldn't make much difference considering they had enough firepower as it was the mosquito had the same canon as well 4x 20 mm in the nose. Wonderful punch that put fear into those facing the incoming

The gun appears to be more accurate on target than the scattered rocket salvo barrages. Perhaps the fins on the rockets are too small for accurate maintained flight.

True. This incident is told in "A Most Secret Squadron" - the story of 618 Squadron that was formed at the same time as the Dam Busters and which used a smaller version of the bouncing bomb, called "Highball".

I love the orchestral music that so ably accompanies this short film about a fighter-bomber plane that can destroy ships with great efficiency. Jolly good show. BTW, most of those rockets didn't hit shit, er, ships. Guess I can't hold it against the pilot, given how dangerous a mission this was. After all, the ships are surely shooting back.

I hate the over loud music that distracts from the film!
@lonzo612 ай бұрын
@@stupitdog9686 I actually agree. I see this not just on these old newsreel films, but on vids put up by content creators right here on YT. Overuse of music is rampant. There ought to be rules against it, I tell ya. No more music when WW2 aircraft are flying, especially. "Tally ho, tally ho, gaggle of bandits at 2 O'clock low. Attacking now."
