Back in 1973, the Mk5 Spitfire BL614 was in storage at RAF Colerne. The BBMF Mk 5 AB910 had had a landing accident.We went to Colerne and removed the undercarriage mounting pintles off BL614 to help repair AB910, Fitting pintles not suitable for flight in return. BL614 had been used in the Battle of Britain film, for taxying. Its undercarriage oleos had been filled concrete, when we took them off, they weighed a ton. Nice to see it fully restored and standing proud at hendon.

@@deb5932 - an interesting take I’ve seen is that the nazis were always doomed to fail because they were always battling fuel shortages. They never had a reliable supply of oil. As with Operation Sea Lion (the invasion of Britain), if the Nazis had gotten onto mainland Britain, the Royal Navy was an insurmountable force which would have stopped resupply. The Nazi invasion force would have struggled to get out of Kent and it would have been quite easy to keep them pinned there, wait for their supplies to run out and then push them back into the sea. It was wildly optimistic thinking he could take the U.K. just the geography made it difficult.

As someone who has probably visited the museum since the 70's and was there yesterday, I really enjoyed your video very much. I have noticed how the excellent manikins which were once in situ have sadly been disposed of which is a shame as I think they added realism and were a nice touch. I find it a lot harder to get decent photos due to the increased amount of planes over the years, but I guess that's down to lack of space. Enjoyed hearing the 'Battle Of Britain' music which you used as a soundtrack. thanks very much.

It's an amazing collection and the biggest missing exhibit is the Short Stirling. How the RAF's first four-engine heavy escaped preservation is beyond me, as it did exactly what it was designed to do from Day One- the Ruhr Bomber. I saw the Bristol Bulldog in flight at Farnborough, the day before it crashed in 1964- quite incredible how that was rebuilt. I have only visited the museum once- for the launch of the computer game The Dam Busters for its UK debut in 1985. Half a dozen veterans of the 1943 raid from 617 Squadron were there for the press launch and I met them. Sadly, I had to get back to the office for tedious work-related things. Looking back, I should have forgotten work and spent more time with these amazing men and the various aeroplanes on display. Back then, the Beverley was outside but some idiots decided to scrap it.
@timorvet15 жыл бұрын
Yes a shame about the Beverley. I know they said it was full of corrosion and was a danger to visitors, but why leave it outside to rot in a climate that is not friendly to aircraft. Im sure they could have placed it under cover somewhere before it got to that stage, rather then allow it to wither away and finally scrap it. As it was, it was only one of two still in existence at the time. One aircraft that defies all logic as to why it wasn't preserved would have to be Avro Lancaster BIII type 464 (Provisioning) ED932 AJ-G piloted by Guy Gibson on the dams raid if ever an historic airframe should be preserved this one is top of the list. After all this was the aircraft that led the famous attack on the Mohne and Eder Dams in Germany in 1943. And later on the award of the Victoria Cross to Guy Gibson. But no it was unceremoniously scrapped in 1947 instead. No foresight at the time was a major player in the extinction of so many airframes at the time.
@NickRatnieks5 жыл бұрын
Yes, I agree about Guy Gibson's Lancaster. Likewise, the offer by BOAC of an Empire Flying Boat was turned down by the Science Museum over storage at that time. I seem to recall that when the Beverley was scrapped it was found to be in much better condition than it had been assessed as by its custodians. We used to watch them as kids, hanging in the sky overhead- flown from RAF Benson. We even had the Rotodyne fly over low one day- that was exciting.

The 'Messerschmitt Bf109G6' is actually well known and the airframe was planned by the manufacturers to be a later F mark, and was converted before being completed into a G2 sub-variant. The G6 almost always had bulges over the larger Heavy Machine guns fitted on top of the engine in that mark, this one doesn't have those. It's been extensively studied from capture in North Africa, and was rebuilt to fly over many years, carefully recording everything found during the years. It flew for a few years, was 'bent' by an officer who mishandled the radiator controls and landed awkwardly, flipping it onto it's back. It has since been grounded and become part of the static displays at Hendon.

@stevetheduck1425 Жыл бұрын
The collections at RAF Colerne an RAF St. Athan were almost broken up, and were often repainted to be put on show at RAF stations over the years. Fortunately the gumption was found to create a National RAF museum at the then-closing RAF Hendon airport an station. Other planes have joined the collection and some have gone (such as the Lightning F.2), and other collections such as RAF Cosford's planes have also been included, allowing some variation.

The music is from the dogfight sequence from the Battle of Britain movie. It is kind of overpowering in this context. I used to come here a lot in the mid eighties in my "Aud" era - that seems so long ago now. It was like a cathederal devoted to airplanes in those days. Looks like it has changed a lot. The then curator, Dr. Fopp, made a few mistakes in my humble opinion. Scrapping the Beverley on site, shipping the Typhoon off to Canada (may not have been him, but another mistake), painting the Tempest V as a target tug and hanging it from the ceiling, replacing the original Lightning with another less appropriate one. The Typhoon and Tempest V were historically incredibly important to the RAF war effort, and to split them up like that was a stupid move. The Tempest II shown here was not there in those days, but it is much less historically important than the MK V. I used to love the art gallery, but if I remember right, my last visit a few years ago, it had been removed or drastically reduced.

Museums are important. You can see machines on videos and on photos, but sometimes you need to see a thing in real life with your own eyes. a friend of mine, had seen for example V2 rockests on photos and in videos, but he was suprised to see a real V2 on dispaly in Munich museum, how big one rocket was really. Reading is one thing, but actually see something originally or remade on originally sizes is anhother experience. jsut think of antique roman artefacts. But back to ww2 aviation, you need to see the real planes in original and only museums can give you such oppertunities.

It's "He 162," "B-25," and B-26." I have to think the RAF museum has all the formats right; should have photographed the signs for reference. If you show the specific subtype for one plane, show them for all. You (video maker) correctly leave "B-24" off the RAAF version of the Liberator but use "P47" (sic) on the RAF version of the Thunderbolt. I hate this. Nice photos.

Silliness. This is the way you label trees but fail to notice you're in a forest. If you want to call a Wildcat a Martlet have a ball but it means nothing, changes nothing and is merely a way to deny the obvious. When the Brits needed a variety of aircraft they couldn't build themselves, they "bought American". Changing names hides nothing. The Brits never could build a decent carrier aircraft and we know where the Mustang came from and how it came about, too. Ah well, go call it what you want but chew reality once in a while. Mere doo doo, look at me, I've memorized chicken drop facts.
@jaymog5 жыл бұрын
We couldn't build a decent carrier aircraft? You're forgetting the Hawker Fury and the D.H. Hornet. I know they came too late to see combat, but they were the fastest piston engined fighters ever built. The best the Americans had was the Corsair which the US Navy rejected because they didn't have a clue how to land it on carriers until we (Royal Navy) showed you how. As for us buying American planes, we would have preferred German, but they wouldn't sell us any. LOL
