Types of RAF Officer interview question to be prepared for…
- Personal questions (application questions)
- Motivational questions (why you want to join etc.)
- Situational questions (examples of where you have already managed and motivated people).
- Current affairs.
During your preparation concentrate on the following key areas:
- The reasons why you want to join the RAF;
- The reasons why you want to become an Officer;
- What choice of career/branch you are most interested in, the reason for choosing that career/branch, and the skills you have to match the role;
- What information you already know about the RAF, its lifestyle and training;
- Information relating to your hobbies and interests including sporting/team activities;
- Any personal responsibilities that you currently have at home, in your education or at work;
- Information about your family and your partner and what they think about you joining;
- Information based on your initial application;
- Your experience of work and education;
- Your managerial and leadership experiences to date;
- Your emotional stability and maturity;
- Your drive and determination to succeed;
- Having a positive reaction to a disciplined environment and towards people in positions of authority.

This is really good and I used it for my filter interview (AFCO Oxford 2018). I have now actually done my IOT and waiting for my JROC date. I wanted to come back to this vid and add something that I think is missing - HUMOUR!!!!!! If you do not know the answer to something or a question throws you, you need to be able to take it in your stride. You are applying to be a leader and leaders do not get flustered when they dont know an answer. The question itself doesnt mater, it's how you think on your feet. If you have done a lot of prep for your interview (history/fleet/ops), the Officer interviewing you will pick this up quickly so will ask you an almost impossible question (the kind of question they know you have little hope of knowing) - what he or she is looking for is how you deal with being knocked off your feet. My tip is to take it in your stride and add a bit of humour to it....."Absolutely NO IDEA! But I will make an effort to find out"...and try and make a joke of it. Dont bullshit. Dont try and waffle. Just be honest and good humoured about not being an "expert". Humour and perspective will take you a long way in the RAF. And never ever ever ever EVER talk down to an SNCO at Cranwell or beyond...they have earned their ranks, you have not...YET! Sorry to ramble......hope this helps anybody! I am (almost) a Regiment Officer.

Wow this is a helpful tip. Did not even came into my mind and was only looking at the questions and not really thinking bout what will I do if I do not have a answer to a question. As they will definitely try to give us a tough interview and want to see how we handle things under pressure. Thats one of the motive of the interview., thank you for sharing your views. IOT is a tough course. As of December 2017 the filter and OASC interviews differ a bit more. The filter focuses more heavily on NATO and OASC now has next to no NATO but much more focus on current affairs and personal background. If you can arrange a station visit either off your own back or via the AFCO, it sets you apart from everyone else, make sure you know not only what your training is, but if you can learn what happens in each week of phase 1 and 2 (if applicable phase 3 as well)

Top tip/Heads up - They will always at some point in the interview keep asking for more detail until you can't answer anymore. They're doing this to see how you react to being put under pressure. And all you have to do to score well in this aspect of the interview is say "I don't know." DO NOT get flustered and start guessing. If you do, you will be heavily marked down.

A lot of process has changed could you elaborate more on this as my joining instructions states otherwise, it only says hanger exercise, group discussion, planing exercise, leaderless exercise, command situation exercise and a command situation exercise followed by an interview which would last for 12 minutes at a very brisk pace.

Attended it, for anyone nervous about the interview part I’ll say it’s a very quick 12 minute interview, just know about your primary choice and about the raf and you’ll be fine as it’s so quick there’s no time to go in large detail.

ActualSlim fine thanks, actually bit of a weird one I did well enough for my backup roles (wso, wsop) but not enough for MSO so even though I’ve passed my oasc I now have to sit a cbat so just studying for that. The filter interview is rather intense but just sell yourself and make sure you know your raf knowledge (eg bases and aircraft and where you’d find them on a map) I found online essentially a list of what to study for the filter interview

Duration of ranks in the Royal Air Force?

Completely depends on the branch. But promotion to Flt Lt is on a time served basis of 3.5 years (as a general rue). Pilots stay ay Flt Lt for ages because you don't do much flying past that rank. Whereas in other branches, depending on how career driven you are, you can make it to Wg Cdr by the time you've reached the end of your initial 12 year contract.
