I have an infinite amount of respect for this man due to after the war spending his time talking about how just because you have had a horrible accident you can still reach for your dreams

Same, honestly that's part of the appeal of React content. Hearing someone else dying of laughter at stuff you also find funny or seeing people learn something new. Also, still waiting on the Old Man to react to the OP that spawned Provins.

I remember watching a documentary around 15 years ago, and I vividly remember the quote from his subordinate saying “It was like god told me to watch over heaven” when he was put in command for one mission. Additionally, if I recall correctly that documentary mentioned that Germany didn’t have the means to provide prosthetics at that time, which lead to the correspondence after both aces had the chance to talk. Funnily enough when news of escape attempts made it to England his old unit tried to keep tabs.

Tolkien died in 1973 and Sir Christopher Lee was in the prime of his life, so it's entirely possible.

14:25 ALL fighter kills had to be confirmed by multiple witnesses, Bader wasn't an exception. This is because even if a pilot wasn't trying to inflate his kills, it was nearly impossible for him to accurately determine if a kill had been made.
@grimalkin6676
@grimalkin6676 11 ай бұрын
Yes but in most cases your wing-man and/or another pilot from your squad was usually enough of a confirmation (in the pacific, your wingman itself was usually enough when it came to the americans though can't speak on the americans in the European theater, I know more about the pacific), for Him (From what I can gather from a few different videos, not just TFE), it specifically had to be an independent party on the ground that was not affiliated with his unit which is abit extreme when compared to other aces I can think of from the war, especially from the pacific. Just saying what I can find from videos, or read though, obviously I wasn't there,not an expert either, and by this point there are very few people left from that era I can talk to about it.

23:29 One of the biggest issues with trying to verify something like casualty statistics with wartime reports after the war or once the reports are no longer classified in modern times is that you would need incredibly specific and accurate reporting from both sides, neither of which is immune from bias in creating the initial reports and both of which have a vested interest in making both their chain of command and their public believe they are competent and can win. You would need to have accurate records of which RAF formations employed the "Big Wing" tactic on which mission with precise and accurate data on where and when they engaged Luftwaffe aircraft, AND you would have to have similarly precise and accurate data of how many Luftwaffe aircraft were sent there and how many returned. This is further complicated as apparently other formations were airborne and involved that were not utilizing the "Big Wing" tactic, and likely shot down a number of those aircraft which should not be counted towards the "Big WIng" claims. War is CHAOS and those numbers are simply not reliably collected much of the time. This is compounded by the need to secure that information as it would be very useful to the opposing side if leaked. Add in the loss of documents when one side is conquered at the end of the war and nearly a century of getting lost in archives and that data is usually just not possible to obtain. This problaem is so large that there are documented cases of the total claims of certain types of aircraft shot down exceeding the total number of that type ever produced. Reports are not perfect.

I'll always remember the bit from the "English Episode" of Family Guy: "Well it's a brilliant day for a long and confusing game of cricket. The field is teeming with men in helmets who don't seem like they need helmets, and men not wearing helmets who probably should be. Oh, and he's batted it clear out of the stadium! Is that good? We don't know! This is a thing we do."

as an American, I can tell you it's like two-dimensional baseball where instead of a diamond you have a linear track and instead of a catcher you have some sticks with knobbly things balanced on top of them and the pitcher's goal is to knock off the knobbly things while the batter defends and if the batter successfully swats the ball away he basically has to run back and forth until someone can get the ball and catch him to stop him from racking up points from his laps

There's a lot of stories of the luftwaffe being uncharacteristically kind compared to other branches of the German military at the time, especially when dealing with enemy airmen. I certainly don't know enough to call them good guys ro even decent overall, but it is interesting
@98765zach

They still (at least in part, and mostly in their fighter corps) had that sort of “Knights of the Sky” mentality to them, and while yes they were there to shoot you down and wouldn’t hesitate to do so, if you jumped out of your plane and were hanging in the air on a parachute, it was not very likely the luftwaffe was going to come machinegun you to death Which can not be said about the Japanese Now naturally you can’t account for all german pilots, but there was also a strange sense of brotherhood between German and British naval and air forces in particular, where they often praised each other in writings home and regretted having to sink or down them, especially in world war 1

I relate to being told you can’t walk again because I had my left forearm snapped in half during a judo match when I was 15-16 and every doctor told me my fragile little women bones would never mend enough to extend my elbow fully again. I, a stubborn American myself, said eff your PT and 14 years later at 29, I have full control of my left arm and continued martial arts as soon as I was healed to this day. Telling someone what they can’t do is going to kick up an unprecedented amount of spite to do exactly what they were told they can’t do 🤣

4:41 Australian here, let me explain what cricket is: "Cricket is a bat-and-ball game that is played between two teams of eleven players on a field at the centre of which is a 22-yard pitch with a wicket at each end, each comprising two bails balanced on three stumps." It's mostly popular in the Commonwealth and is Australia's national sport (IIRC, I'm not a sports nerd.)

Speaking of not being liked by your command I know an enlisted guy who got caught sleeping with the CO’s daughter every officer was trying to get him for something to try and get the CO’s favor including one time when he had mono and was put on guard duty against doctors orders and the officer who put him on duty walked over and falsely accused him of sleeping on duty. He said he only got out of it because a higher officer was walking by and saw the whole thing and the one who put him on duty got in deep trouble because of it
