Airfix RAF Sea King rescue helicopter with small ocean diorama. Full build of the model kit using Tamiya paints and PJ Productions resin helicopter crew. The ocean diorama base is made from tissue paper, PVA glue, acrylic paint, and acrylic gloss medium. You can find the Airfix kit here: amzn.to/370Fk7H
The HAR 3 is the dedicated search and rescue (SAR) version of the Westland Sea King helicopter. It entered RAF service in 1978 and was finally retired in 2015.

Nice job - including a pretty realistic seascape. The Winch Operator should have been moved forward, so that his right hand was steadying the cable and his left hand would have been in the cabin operating the hoist control. He would normally wear a green immersion suit, and the Winchman wore a yellow suit for water entry. The yellow objects to the rear of the Cargo Door are MS10 life rafts. The roof stretcher is a Stokes Litter, and there was tons of other crap stowed inside. If you wanna be perfect, manufacture some winch weights to hang down by the door -they helped stop the door sliding shut when the door brake was weak. Very nice though, very skilful. The major error is that the Winchman is not slim, young and handsome enough!!!

Nice video of a fantastic build! I'm building the same kit with a similar diorama concept (I'm going to include some rocks and a stranded 3d printed boat). I mistakenly cut off the notches that separated the landing gear cowls from the fuselage. Realized my mistake only too late. The water effects are spectacular

@torquesplitcallnr5128
@torquesplitcallnr5128 2 жыл бұрын
Not altogether true. The Sea King had a poor single engine performance and so hovering over land we would always lower the gear. Over the sea however if one of the engines failed the Sea King could land on the water, dump fuel to a predetermined weight and attempt a single engine water take off. For this the gear needed to be up. So generally gear down hovering over land and up over the sea.

Absolutely crisp model. You really did carefully in every detail. The one thing I'm looking for is a model with antennae rigging. Thanks mate. Fair question indeed. I guess a couple of reasons: firstly, it is notoriously awkward to use in thick layers, and I've had issues with it before. Related to that, because this is supposed to be the ocean I would need to colour it quite heavily or pour it quite thick, so that we wouldn't see the bottom of the base. I do have some resin for a future project though :)

Can you help me out with an issue I am having? I recently built the new Airfix 1/24 scale Spitfire and want to build it into a diorama. However, there is nothing like figures and vehicles so would using say a 1/35 scale work any advice please
@ModelNerd
@ModelNerd Жыл бұрын
Hamish, I know the feeling! I think there is a single pilot figure out (which may no longer be available) and nothing else. Unfortunately I don't think 1/35 would work: a 6ft / 185cm figure would be 77mm tall in 1/24 but only 52mm tall in 1/35. That's quite a difference. Perhaps, maybe, hopefully, somebody will release ground crew in this scale in the future - but I wouldn't hold my breath.

NIce built. But who or what are they saving? both wear orange, so its the same crew?
@ModelNerd
@ModelNerd 2 жыл бұрын
Both figures in orange are part of the rescue crew - a crewman always gets lowered, never just an empty winch. Who are they rescuing? Somebody who just disappeared under the waves. Or maybe they are just training :)

If using the oil paint mixed with thinners for pin wash, does it dry as quick as say🤔 tamiya panelline🤔
@ModelNerd
@ModelNerd 2 жыл бұрын
Oils in general will take maybe a bit longer to dry I think - but it also depends on how much you let the oil soak out before use (by placing the paints on a piece of cardboard or paper towel).

Yep, he did. There shouldn't be any compression on hover so I tried to hide it.

If you want to paint your airbrush like this with acrylic paint. The compressor must be high-performance, such as a belt drive, so that the air pressure can be maintained to a certain level! Did you use that kind of compressor when coloring with an airbrush like this? 14:18

Watching this video, I was completely shocked by the fact that the airbrush and brush strokes were completely mixed! 3:49

This kit really disappointed me. It's missing the prominent VOR/ILS antenna on the tail, the vent screens on the top front of the main rotor housing, the troop seat supports are in the wrong place and using decals to represent the many cooling vents really doesn't look convincing. Main rotor also pretty simplified. Will use some of this kits interior parts on the Revell Germany Sea King. You did an excellent job on yours though. I have several of those crew sets; think both the winchman and rescue swimmer are supposed to be positioned in the door, not on a rescue cable.
