Painting of the Polish Air Force 🇵🇱 in the RAF. The letter ZX was used by a group of several Polish pilots sent to Africa, called in Poland "Skalski Circus". Stanisław Skalski fought against the Germans🇩🇪 from September 1939 to 1945. He survived the war, returned to Poland, and died several years ago. In 1939, he shot down a German reconnaissance plane ( pilot and an observer) over Poland. He then landed next to him and provided medical assistance to the German pilot. Many years after the war, he met this pilot. Newspapers in Poland wrote about it. (I wrote from memory).

That’s a great story! My wife’s family is Polish and man, they are a tough bunch. Plus Polish women are stunning 🤩.

ZX was code of 145 Squadron. Polish Fightin Team, also known as Skalski's cirus was a flight C of RAF No 145 Sqadron.

This exact livery (ZX 6) is a F/Lt Stanisław Skalski Spitfire.

Don’t forget, the also fought the Italians in Africa. They shot down three Macchi 202s one day without losing a single Spitfire.

Dang that Bf-109 looked awesome with that brown paint job! I don't really like how WWII flak is depicted in DCS. Without modern sensors, accurately estimating the range of a high speed, maneuvering fighter would be absurdly difficult, and since for most of the war, no proximity fuses existed, each individual round would have to be timed before firing. While aiming at a plane at close range would be fairly straight forward, getting the shells to actually burst around a target as it maneuvered would be basically impossible. The gun crew would have to predict the range and flight path of the incoming aircraft, calculate the fuse time needed, manually set said fuses, load the gun and then fire. A process that would take at least tens of seconds per shot, if not much longer and if the plane was moving slightly faster or slower than you guessed, or was just a bit closer or further away, your shells could pop hundreds of meters off of the target. DCS on the other hand, has every single shot bursting as it passes the target plane, even if the plane was in the middle of a drastic maneuver as the shell was launched. The flak pops perfectly follow maneuvering aircraft as if each round is accurately timed the moment it leaves the barrel of the gun, like a modern flack system can do with laser/radar range finding and remote programmable, or proximity fused shells.

I agree with you completely. I also don't care for the sound of the flak bursts. The guns firing at 7:24 sound OK, but the exploding shells sound like someone hitting a PVC pipe with a dowel rod.
@baydenhenry15224 сағат бұрын
What flight game would it be if you never feared flak. Not disagreeing just saying, without proximity fuse it’s not as entertaining

I'm glad you made that comment, I agree 100%. And the sound of that Merlin as he shows the Spit from outside the cockpit (like at 1:00) is a perfect soundtrack.

World War 2 desert theaters (North Africa, Middle East) have always been very interesting for me. I'm glad for more representation of it. One thing that could be interesting to see is a Spitfire vs Iraqi BF 109 match up. Iraq operated German aircraft, after all.

Great to see you flying warbirds Longshot. But I do have a few words of advice when you do..... Check Six.....way more often. Remember, you don't have all those fancy sensors to give you SA like you do in a modern fighter.

Actually, beside the Mk.VIII - which was a more advanced than the Mk.IX, but the production could not run up as fast as the Mk.IX (which first was a Mk.V airframe with an Merlin 60 series engine) - the Mk.IX took part in the closing events of the North Africa Campaign (just like some early Fw-190A), and Polish pilots flew it as well. All Mk.VIII variants used outside the UK, some were used in Italy, but that was most of its European carrier. They mostly were used in the Middle East and in PTO and CBI theaters. Many pilots said that the Mk.VIII was the best Merlin Spitfire of all times. They ruled the skies where the Japanese fighters could not do anything against them, and even they could intercept the fast Japanese recce plane, the Mitsubishi Ki-46 "Dinah". Well, if the "Yellow 14" wouldn't be just a paintscheme, you would have no chance.😎 What you are constantly calling "machine guns" they are actually quad 20mm flak autocannons. Or, maybe 37mm single autocannons. You also saying having few ammo, maybe not a full load because of the bomb load? Because this one has a C-wing, which has 2x20mm 120rpg, and 4x.303 with 350rpg. That's not plenty but better than the B-wing, which had only 2x20mm with 60rpg in drum magazines (and the same 4x.303 350rpg layout as well). The Hispano Mk.II fired 600rpm, the .303 Browning fired about 1100-1200rpm. That's 12seconds for the cannons, and about 15-17seconds for the Brownings. Rare installment when 4x20mm Hispano was in the wings, but that was way too heavy (A Hispano Mk.II cannon was about 50kg, a Browning .303 was about 12-15kg). At Malta they usually removed the outer .303s, to save weight, and save the guns for hard times (when the convoys could not reach Malta on time).

Masquerading as a Polish pilot, or the real deal? Either way, you're in good company - as confirmed by their successes during the BOB, which should be no surprise, as they were highly trained, especially in comparison to the home-grown volunteers.
