RAF Thurleigh - Abandoned RAF Base

Had a midweek mooch about this abandoned RAF base although most of the buildings were sealed up tight still managed a few small out buildings and found a kennels.

In the mid-70s I was working at RAE Farnborough. RAE Bedford (Thurleigh) was an outstation where we occasionally did trials. It was originally planned post-war to join three airfields (Thurleigh, Poddington & Little Staughton) which had runways in approximate alignment to create one enormous runway. This plan died when it was realised developing aircraft would not need it. I well remember a trial there and that wooden tower at the beginning of the video whizzing past our wingtip - we were flying considerably lower than it!

This place is accessible and has been used by the ministry of defence for years and is by no means abandoned. It’s just not used everyday. Access is now not available to anyone because people continuously broke in and vandalised it. You have to contact them and ask to visit. Hope this helps.
