This was an amazing final. Most tennis fans of the 2010s don’t even realize that the Masters Madrid was played on indoor harcourt for the first 7 years of its existence...much less that Rafa won it (his SECOND Masters title on Hardcourt that year...as he won the Masters Canada in July by beating Agassi in the Finals. He also reached the Miami Finals, losing to Fed in a great 5-set Final). The point is, Rafa has been playing great on and WINNING big Hardcourt tournaments since 2005. He could ALWAYS play on Hardcourts

Rafa was a fearsome monster in 2005. People talk about his French Open win and other early losses, but know little about his play in the Masters Series and other tournaments. He won the Masters four times and finished runner-up in a close match with Roger. He also won many titles and if I remember correctly, he would have had over 8,000 points, which is what he has now. Almost the same points as Alcaraz now. And the winning percentage was 89%. One more win and it would have been 90%.

This match destroyed his foot. He pretty much broke his foot in this match and was out for the next 4-5 months. His doctors discovered he had the birth defect on his foot and he might have to retire soon. He refused to retire and said he will play through the pain and wore an extra-large and extra-padded shoe that NIKE custom-made for him and the rest is history.

Nadal wasn’t at his prime yet. He still wasn’t good on hard courts and progressively was getting better on grass, although he had no business making the final of Wimbledon in 2006. And Djokovic won his first slam in 2008 but didn’t truly break out as a threat till the 2nd half of 2010. He said after his French Open loss in 2010 he thought about retiring because he just couldn’t beat Nadal or Federer. But then he worked harder and changed his mindset and by the 2nd half of 2010 he was playing incredible. And we all know about 2011.

Thomas brunkle I don’t really support “weak era”, because there were still many good players then, but it’s undeniable there was no all time great to really challenge Federer the way there was from 2008-on (when Nadal broke out) and especially 2011-on (Djokovic and Murray broke out). Thomas brunkle Federer actually only holds a 14-11 lead over Murray, and Murray held the lead for a while before Federer came back. Wawrinka matches up much better with Djokovic than Federer or Nadal because Djokovic lacks the variety of the other two so Wawrinka has a field day crushing Djokovic’s rally balls. What Federer has done against Djokovic is impressive; he tends to bring his best against him and they’ve had great matches. Federer has adapted to the other big 3 better with age though.
