Rafales & Subs From France, F-15s From US: Indonesia Joins Race To Counter China In Southeast Asia

Indonesia is set to bring Rafale fighter jets and Naval Group attack submarines into Jakarta’s air force and navy. Indonesia signed a deal with France to buy 6 Rafale warplanes as part of an anticipated total order of 42 on February 10. The deal was announced when Indonesian Defense Minister met his French counterpart in Jakarta.

This is quite historical since Indonesia had always purchased jets from either US or Russia. Never France. Due to our military's past (human rights abuses in East Timor/Timor Leste now), it was very hard for us to purchase weapons from western countries. US is a legacy partner since the 60s and Russia, well they don't care what we do with their weapons really. I guess the Indonesian government took advantage of the botched submarine deal between France and Australia. We knew France lost billions so they'd sell whatever to whomever. That said, our previous commander of the armed forces, who just recently stepped down, received his overseas training in France so that might also have something to do with it.

I don't think Asians should think we are inferior to the west. This is a step towards the AUKUS alliance not away since any aggression towards Australia would mean both France and the US would halt support or even ban Indonesia from using their weapons against Australia. I think countering AUKUS was more of a French agenda than Indonesia. France wanted to get back at them for the betrayal. For Indonesia AUKUS's threat is that it causes an arms race in the region, AUKUS in itself is not a threat to Indonesia, that title falls to China for their antics in the SCS.
