Indonesia is the largest developing economy in Southeast Asia, with a gross domestic product of over US$1 trillion. The country’s size and location have made it Indonesia an attractive strategic partner for China and the United States to influence the Asean region. Indonesia has attempted to remain neutral in the China-U.S rivalry, but if tensions between the two continue to rise, will Indonesia be forced to take sides or adopt a foreign policy that doesn't align with either superpower?

Indonesia got $22Billion from russia investment, $14Billion approve from the US military and assistance + $3Billion energy project, and more than $18Billion multiyear investment from china. That is insane how they balance the diplomatic ties for their national interest. i mean, not every country can do that.

The way of thinking of Indonesia it's not just a pragmatic. It came from long experience of colonialism. A country where for centuries experience war. From that our founding fathers has declared to be non block or neutral. For Indonesia, coalition is for freedom and friendship not for war.

As Indonesian, I still think Indonesia needs to work on their own economic and military power if they want to remain neutral. Like it as not, both China and US are superpowers and given the inclination, they may be able to exert damaging pressure onto Indonesia, whether via coercion (too much economic dependence) or via guns (all out war). If Indonesia wants to remain neutral, they need to be strong both in military power and economical power, or the country will buckle.

For a country of Indonesia's size, it's beneficial to remain independent and neutral. Big countries can do that, for small countries that is much more difficult.

Yes, i would even say that's a mandatory for Indonesia's survival. If we're not neutral, one of those superpowers would support insurgency in our country. The US would support Indonesia's insurgency groups if it choose China's side and vice versa. Indonesia is very big so break ups insurgencies could be fragile although Indonesia is pretty stable now.

our military is not capable of preventing invasions from big power, unless we go the ukrainian way (i.e ordinary citizens are given weapons and ordered to fight at the frontlines).. with the increasing tension between Washington and Beijing, I genuinely don't think Indonesia will be able to stay neutral in the long term

According to the documentary "Warmonger's" It doesn't matter if you're neutral. They have different ways to target your country. "When America wants to go to war with someone, we invent the reasons." Take the Iraq war and the Afghanistan war for example. Anyone remember this history? 1965 Indonesia coup. CIA involvement in coup 1965 is one great example on how the west took sides by supplying weapons, made propaganda and indirectly killed more than 3 million innocent lives. Their strategy is based on "divide and conquer". This document was declassified by CIA because many activists around the globe condemn the war crimes of US and their allies. Not only that, CIA overthrew the legit president of indonesia and replaced it with a corrupt Suharto who supported the US. That's how US mining company 'freeport' got hold of indonesian biggest gold mine. Declassified files outline US support for 1965 indonesian massacre - National Security Archive. --Jeff Lith And this Even today in 2022, this is still happening. People have forgotten how a vial of detergent was used by colin powell to wage an illegal WMD war against Iraq, killing millions of Iraqis. Now they are using the same Cold War strategy to brainwash their citizens and the world for another hybrid war against Russia and China. Hence the Xinjiang cotton propaganda going on now spread by a homophobic right wing religious nut case German called Adrian Zenz. -papa smurf 😣

@@condorX2 "It doesn't matter if you're neutral". Neutrality DOES matter, because it may prevent you from getting involved in a conflict between other parties. If you were allied to one of those parties, there's a high risk you would also be a target. That's basic logic for children. Neutrality cannot protect you from everything. They may always be adversaries who want what you have, and they don't care whether you're neutral or not.

For many years since the Philippines incorporated by the US since 1901 until 1947, they invested a lot on our country to be developed. Even China helped to developed our ailing infrastructure in the country. Indonesia, invested a lot on our transportation and developed our mothballed defences. Now, our country's armed forces are now capable to defend our territories. Our nations strategic vessels, build by Indonesians, used by our Philippine Navy vowed to response, help and relief the Indonesians if any disaster occurred to the country.

True, Honestly, the Philippines is not a small country we are roughly the same size as Japan if not smaller or bigger. There is a misconception that our country is small, I beg to differ. Now, for our country to pursue a true independent foreign policy like India and Indonesia, the Philippines needs to abrogate its Mutual Defense Treaty, Visiting Forces Agreement as well as the EDCA. We need to invest more in our armed forces to finally stop relying on foreign powers who we all know are all bark and no bite, we should also be pragmatic on dealing with terrirtorial disputes with our Neighbour, China. We shouldn't antagonize them as they can be our partner for the future.

Indeed that Indonesia maintain the connection with many of "rival" altogether. We have both economic ties with USA and China. We shared joint military training with both USA and Russia. We maintain relation with both North and South Korea. Basically we give warm welcome for all who agreed to respect our neutrality and are not interfere in our public will to be in peace. In fact. The only globally significant nation that Indonesia doesn't have an official relation is Israel, which we did that purely based on solidarity for Palestinian, who did support our independece since the beginning.

Nobody like war. What if you're provoked? Anyone remember this history? This is for standing up to the US. You'll get burned. --Jeff Lith

In theory, Indonesia will indeed be neutral, but if we imagine a military confrontation between America and China taking place, Indonesia will certainly take sides if one of the two countries harming Indonesia will actually happen, as long as the two countries do not harm Indonesia, Indonesia will automatically remain neutral. our country does not have a strong navy or air force like other countries, but remember that no one will be safe if an enemy sets foot on the land of the motherland. because the Indonesian people fought together with our army, in a state of emergency there was no Indonesian civil society.

No, the US doesn't value anyone's anything. The US is literally the main actor behind the rise of Indonesia's ONLY dictator who ruled for 30+ years. The US only cares about others being with them, they don't actually care if it's democracy or whatever, they will use that narrative against their enemies but not if the countries are with them.

I am Chinese, and war will never occur on the mainland of China or the mainland of the United States. War may occur in third countries, such as the Russo Ukrainian War. The superpower will never be defeated and can only wait for its own disintegration, just like the Soviet Union. Dun you read Indonesia and China have no territorial dispute more so on Natuna..... Only US is stirring the muddy waters all around the world in the name of Rule Based Order World, in which has nothing to do with International Law. Even US didn't ratify the UNCLOS meaning they may object if any countries start to sail 12 nautical miles off its coast. Pacific and Atlantic are huge oceans as natural protective barriers for the US. If the opinion is from Japan, then I could understand as it is not a natural country and must obey US's policy.

war and conflict happens mostly when up phase and down phase of rival civilizations collides. the energy of progression met with resistance of preservation. the indicators are : demography (mirroring human potential of any civilization), infrastructure (mirroring cultural sharpness in planning & executing large scale project), military (mirroring innovation at its purest). now in this case.. for non conflict civilization like indonesia, it is important to measure their own indicators of civilization.. and navigate wisely whether they want to ride the up wave (progress) or they need low wave (preserve).
