@Milesco I was young and naive. I took the advice of a former lawyer who was an administrator at my school (perhaps a red flag). He discouraged me from suing. In a nutshell, he believed Atlanta PD and BofA would walk off scot free; that it would be a waste of my time and effort. Eight years later, I was sitting in Torts class in my first year of law school. As the professor taught the elements of false imprisonment, I was overcome. I quickly googled the statute of limitations in Georgia - 2 or 3 years if I recall. It wouldn’t be the last time I had such a, “Hey, wait a minute!” moment over those next few years.

I never experienced racism firsthand, my family was all white and I never had many friends, and looking back most of them were white or white-passing. So I just had no idea it was still a thing. I had figured it out by high school, but I still thought it was JUST systemic and triple K types were a VERY rare minority. I think it was Charlottesville that made it click for me. When I saw crowds of white supremacists marching the streets with tiki torches, attacking people, that I realized that direct violence racism was very much still a thing and there were plenty of people who acted on it. There were just. So many of them. Just watching it on TV was a horror show. They killed a white woman, Heather, driving a car into a crowd, just for being against racism. Just daring to associate with POC. Death sentence. And then the BLM marches after that, the names of Black teenagers that all bled together, being usurped by a new one before we even got used to saying their name, until George Floyd and Breanna Taylor… the video, the begging… I had had no idea. We've actually had quite a few times when i ran a large roofing company they get a big check after a heavy week, say making 70 hours DBA with maybe a bonus attached or some reimbursements, and the bank rejects them. The same bank that they go to every week all of a sudden flags them. And it's our bank that the checks are written from, it's ridiculous. And it's always the exact same thing, every single time in 14 years that we got a call like that it was when one of our Mexican staff members tried to put in a large check. Never had it happen to anyone else, even for checks 10x that size from our salesman. Literally send out 75 checks a week minimum, 3900 checks a year in payroll alone. The next day I walked into that branch but had to wait about 5 minutes in line because there were two clients ahead of me. Before I got to the teller, a cop shows up and demands to see my 🆔. Bear with me. There is a point. I'm 53, and yt, soccer mom presenting. I have MS, and some days I can't drive. My sons, dil, and my sons' lifelong friend will help me out during these times if I have somewhere I desperately need to be. Their friend has a very nice Honda civic. Twice now, in the past 3 years that I've needed transportation help, we've been pulled over for no other reason than he " met description" for something or the other. He's a young black man driving a nice car in the south. That's the description. Period. Once they see my shriveled old yt a$$ in the passenger seat, the BS dries up quickly, and that just infuriates me more. He is very calm and monotone about the whole thing while I get to rant and bit** at the officers because again, I'm yt. He tells me "mamma calm down, this happens all the time." 🤬😡🤬😠 That don't make it right. POC mommas, you amaze me. How do you send your babies out of the house each day??? I was blessed and befriended by a handful of beautiful black girls in first grade(shoutout to the Hightowers and Merriweathers) that had a huge extended family, so I grew up witnessing the casual dehumanizing of POC. But I also witnessed the unyielding community, love, and soul of POC. I'm rambling now, but the point is back there somewhere.

The bank manager wouldn’t cash the check because in his words “they didn’t have a relationship with me “. I walked outside and immediately called the law firm and spoke with someone from accounting. About 10 minutes later the law firm called me back and said go back to the bank and they will cash it. Nothing was more satisfying than walking back in the bank and seeing the look on the branch managers face when he had to cash that check. The crazy thing is the accountant told me they new the check was authentic because it has a code on it that the bank checks that tells them it’s legit and who the person is that’s cashing it.
