13:40 - 13:44 you can notice the shruti lapses. Not even close to 10% of the magic and excitement that MMI used to create with his kanada swaraprastaras. And the hallmark of MMI's school of music was adherence to shruti at every instance.

i agree that sri guruvayur dorai does appear to be an old lion well past his prime in this video; and, it is saddening to see the old stalwarts when they are on the decline; his thani avartanam's in his younger days used to be crisp, melodious and thunderous; those interested should check this video of his thani from some 40 years back when he was at the top of his game; Sri Guruvayur Dorai - Thani Avarthanam, Houston, USA 1977

My humble opinion is that age factor plays a huge role in what sort of strength and clarity you can harness in your mridangam playing. There are also a lot of lessons to be learned on how to accompany for a RTP and how to embellish the vocalist. I am in no position to suggest stalwarts and the artists I worship should hang it up. We will at the least should give them the due respect so they leave the performing stage when they feel it is time and on their own terms.

May I ask where you felt his accompaniment was below par? I personally felt his accompaniment was quite good , especially with how well he anticipated TNS. Also with is thani? While I agree there were parts where he may have slipped up a it (keep in mind it's not like this thani was rehearsed) I felt he recovered well and what he played was rather complicated. Please let me know!

What does he say at 8:58? before starting the swaraprastharam

"Madurai enru varalai annu ungalakku sandehama irukko illiyo" I think.... Because in the RTP it comes as Madhura Mani (for Madurai Mani) So in the next line he says Gana Utta(MA DURAI) Mani ... Thus when you say the 2 words continuously, you hear Madurai also funnily using it to kindle Guruvayur Dorai Sir on stage.
