Ragdoll Cat Having A Belly Clip And Groom
In this video I show you Nicholas, a lovely ragdoll cat being clipped on his belly because his coat had become badly matted underneath and then I gave him a thorough groom over elsewhere to thin the coat out.
Regular maintenance visits prevent matting getting too advanced so we have asked his Dad to bring him a little earlier to prevent Nicholas's coat from getting into this state again.
Our long haired cats do take a lot of looking after, but if you make it a habit every day for just a few minutes, then it will save your cat from getting matted.

After 7 years, I´m finally able to do some grooming with my Ragdoll cat. When she gets knots and when the summer comes here, in Spain, I take her in to a groomer. Because she is so badly behaved, they have to give her something to calm her down. Then they completely shave her body and parts of her tail and arms. Do you think a belly groom would be enough to keep her cool? And, do you have any suggestions on how to get her to calm down so she doesn't bite me or the groomer?

Great news that you are finally getting to do some grooming with your Ragdoll fur baby. The more work you can do with her every single day (don't miss a day!) the better behaved she will become. I had a feral cat who attacked his Mum and myself when I was first called out to visit him. This continued for a number of months, However, i asked his Mum to work on him every day, even if it was for 1 minute! Over time and with a great effort from his Mum and me returning every 3 months, he completely changed. Mum only had to pick up his grooming tools and move to his grooming area, and he would run to her waiting for his pampering to start. He couldn't get enough of being groomed. It was amazing to have been involved in his transformation from a terrified, angry cat lashing out at everyone who came near him, to becoming a pampered feline. It all comes down to your persistency to continue grooming even for a minute a day and gradually build that time up. A belly clip would certainly help keep your pusscat cool as they can get their belly down low on a cool surface. You can even purchase gel cooling mats that your fur baby may like too. Good luck

Quick question, do you wash cats?

Hiya Karin, Being a mobile groomer to start off with, I chose not to wash cats as it proved difficult in people's homes to get set up correctly. I was trained in how to bathe cats correctly in order to get my qualifications, however, even when I had to change to working from home due to the pandemic, I still did not bathe cats. You shouldn't really have to. As soon as you bathe a cat you tend to strip their natural oils away from them. It is these oils that help them keep warm and waterproof and conditioned. So, I recommend to most of my clients, if you don''t have to bathe them, then don't do it. Of course if they are completely covered in something that cannot be removed otherwise, then you have no option but to bathe them. But, regular grooming will bring their own oils through their coat and will keep them in tip top condition and tangle free. You can always pop a bit of natural spray on them if you want to freshen them up a bit, I only use aloe vera or oatmeal based sprays which don't give off a lot of scent, but they give a bit of conditioning to the skin if the cat is particularly dry. Hope that helps!

Thank you very much for this, does help us as we have two Persians, and have always wondered if washing was necessary. We groom every day and use the same comb and zoom groom brush that you use and that keeps their coats lovely. We also clip their hygiene area and inside back legs. That helps too. We've learnt lots by watching your videos for technique. Great job on this cat, what a transformation!

What can you use on a cat's coat on a regular basis to help with dry coat.

Always start from within - so that means looking at their diet. If necessary speak with your own vet for advice. Also check there is always plenty of water around - hydration is key! Then you can look at grooming. Usually, the zoom groom will do the trick if used regularly - it promotes the cats own natural oils through the coat, nothing better than that to be honest! I do pop some oatmeal conditioning spray on them whilst here, but I wouldn't recommend it be used consistently. Zoom groom by you should do the trick of keeping a coat in tip top condition.
