That's a conveniently selective view to take on what happened. What matters is that your implication was that he doesn't play live, that he mimes, and you were entirely wrong about that. You could have said that while what we are hearing is not him playing, maybe he is in fact playing a guitar part that we can't hear in the video or that there might be some other explanation and that we shouldn't jump to conclusions just yet. Instead you immediately jumped to the conclusion that he doesn't play his guitar live at his concerts and instead mimes and that the people who pay to see him perform are being conned. That was your point and you know it. You now know that this is completely false but instead of apologising for making such a damaging accusation, you're now trying to create a loophole that gets you off the hook based on a technicality - It's true that what we hear in that particular video is not him but that doesn't change the fact that you accused him of miming at his concerts and of being a fraud which he isn't. You're clutching at straws in order to avoid admitting that you were wrong. That's cowardly and pathetic and it shows that you're not a person of good character.

If you watch Lucas' reply video to Jared he admits you are listening to a third guitar part (prerecording backing trax) while he is playing... However, that third guitar part is blaring through his floor wedge as his reference and is a harmony part for what he is actually playing. So technically you are right, he was playing the same pattern live but a harmony of what you are hearing because the recording device is so close to his floor wedge. He had other footage from further back in the crowd that prove he wasn't miming. This is a problem with bands who straight DI and don't use IEMs; low stage volume means the front couple rows of fans get the band's monitor mix rather than the FOH mix. I remember when fret wraps were considered "cheating"
@Cr8Tron4 жыл бұрын
We're living in a new era for sure!! 😂 The only person who ever told me not to use it was my second guitar instructor, when I was 13. The instructor I briefly had just prior (before he spontaneously decided to move back east) was a guy who could tap with all four fingers, and would use a wrap only for that. Even though he never encouraged me to use one in general, I decided to do so at the time anyway. When the second instructor came into the picture, he really took issue with seeing this being my habit. I could understand his position as an instructor, trying to do his job, which is to observe how their students can improve their instrumental control... But through the years, not only have I gotten approvals from many great musicians I've been able to work with, I've also had more than a few musicians tell me that they're actually impressed by the ingenuity behind such a solution. In fact, there were a couple different people who specifically mentioned Victor Wooten, saying that "if he's allowed to use one..." Fast-forward 25 years later, and I still have no regrets about this method having become a commonplace approach that people regularly see me utilize. A lot of people don't realize that oftentimes you still have to know how to mute the strings like you would otherwise, as the wrap isn't always 100% guaranteed to work, and considering that you sometimes might want to use open strings for certain parts. I can, however, say that having the wrap as an option is more than just a possible crutch; that it's also oftentimes a great way to open the creative doors, in terms of exploring expressive tonal qualities that might not have been a possibility prior, due to limitations on what ways you can pick while also having to mute.

Metal, Especially Tech Death Metal is a genre that’s about pushing the boundaries of Technicality and making brutal music. This doesn’t mean by JUST playing fast. Sooooooo many musicians who are not fans of Tech Death will bash it just because it’s too much for them to handle. Most musicians who see someone playing something super technical get discouraged/jealous and immediately bash it. Just because someone is online playing a super fast technical solo doesn’t automatically mean they are competing with anyone. That’s what Tech Death Metal is all about is playing technical brutal music. It’s all about how “You” perceive it. I don’t like Jazz but I respect the genre because it requires a high level of skill to play. Don’t be biased.

Your just being biased to the genre. You don’t have to like the style but atleast respect the technicality and skill level involved in playing it (When it’s not being faked). I see your profile pic is of you with an acoustic so I’m assuming your a musician. So your another jealous musician who calls music that you don’t have the ability or skill level to play rubbish and so you bash it? I’m not a fan of Jazz but I respect the skill level involved in playing it. There are very technical bands like Animals as Leaders, Archspire, Origin, etc who are not faking there music who are highly skilled musicians and the music they play requires a high skill level to perform. If you are an unbiased musician then you would appreciate it for what it is without liking the style of music.
@jazzguitarwithandy4 жыл бұрын
Damien Omen EXE yeah but I’m entitled to not like it right? I love tons of styles of music! The issue I take with some of this kind of music is that technical prowess is placed above musicality and that takes away from the enjoyment for me. I can appreciate the technique and the work that goes into this genre. I used to love practicing all the stuff from Speed Mechanics, but to me it’s often missing melodic content. It’s a weird thing unique to guitar music.
@jazzguitarwithandy4 жыл бұрын
Bultron La Gore I didn’t say I didn’t appreciate the technical ability! Where did I say that? Some of these guys have outrageous technique that I can admire. I know the level of work they have put it into have that. I just find this kind of music tends to place technical prowess above the quality of the music. That’s my personal opinion. It becomes this competitive nonsense about who can play the fastest which seems pretty unique to the guitar. I’m entitled to think a style is rubbish as it doesn’t speak to me, just as you are. Just because I don’t like it doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate someone’s ability. Do you like all music just because someone’s a good technician? Music for me is much more about feelings and emotion and this type of music feels devoid of that to me. I have no jealousy towards any of these players! I’d much rather spend my time learning to outline chord changes in different ways than playing as many notes as possible in one one bar! Musicality is what I feel is missing and that is just my personal opinion. Get another instrument to play this sort of stuff and it would sound like nonsense.

I once wrote a song, which they very much liked and play to this very day, 15 years already. I have zero knowledge of music theory, can't differentiate major from minor chords ... but thx to GP i did it... might be a crap in terms of musicality but sounds good, and fans of the band like it. As the live clip of Lucas Mann was recorded at the front of the crowd you almost only hear his PA. It is indeed not Lucas' guitar you're hearing. It's in fact prerecorded harmonic which is coming from his PA system. If you watch clips from the same show which are recorded further back in the crowd, you hear what him and Joel are actually playing as the sound of the venue speakers is not being drowned by the PA system.

What REALLY burns me about Lucas Mann in particular is that he is miming, and yet, bands like the Zenith Passage, Obscura, Allegaeon, Archspire, Alkaloid, Nile, Necrophagist, and the original OG's of tech death, Death and Cryptopsy, are actually FULL of highly technical, really inspiring and killer music being played by LEGITIMATE guitarists that really ARE that good. These fakers get more publicity for faking than legitimate players. Yeah sure, from a songwriter's perspective and a composer's perspective, what these fakers are doing is 100% valid, but, isn't it just more fun and badass when they not only can THINK the musical idea, but PLAY the musical idea?

@@WaLeeZyyy Funny thing is; I saw the footage myself and then Lucas' response video before any of these ones (I still haven't even watched Jared Dines one because he irritates me), so there goes your theory out the window. I make my own mind up. Now here's the thing....I haven't seen Lucas play this in a live stage setting. Nobody has. All we have is him in studio sitting down (kinda) nailing it after possible multiple takes. And even then, without the backing track, the picking wasn't nearly as perfect. All that proves is that he's capable of playing the sweeps which we all knew he could anyway. What it doesn't prove is that a) he's capable of playing them perfectly live as he claims and b) that the footage we saw wasn't "mimed", because even according to Lucas himself what we hear in that video is the backing track- not what he's playing. Meaning that not only were all the criticism videos 100% correct, but also remember that Lucas chose to upload that video as an example of his live playing KNOWING that the audio wasn't him playing at all. Now that, my friend, is fraud. So he can reveal all the stuff behind the scenes, admit that he uses a backing track and try to act as if it's all perfectly natural and above board, but it absolutely isn't. Now just to reiterate one more time: the "live" video he posted which everyone said wasn't him playing...wasn't him playing. He admits that. So the fans have zero reason to attack the youtubers who pointed out the truth. He also admits knowing it wasn't his audio when he posted the video as an example of his playing. So yes, he lied. So the fact of what he can or cannot play is irrelevant. His video WAS fake and he faked it to sell tickets to gullible people who don't know any better. End of story.

I don't understand people hearing a backing-tracked guitar lead in a video, and just accepting "it was coming from my monitor wedge" as a valid excuse. That's not how monitor mixes work. I've never known any musician who would prefer to have a backing track of *their* pre-recorded part blasting that loudly in their face. It defeats one of the main purposes of monitoring: to hear what you're actually playing to judge what you're doing in real-time. This fakery drives me nuts. The same people who would jump to the defense of guitarists faking performances are the same individuals who would jump on the comment section of any pop singer's "live" performance to point out lip synching. It is no different.

@@brianjdillon Not true. Music is a form of art and art is about appealing to peoples' subjective senses. All instruments are a way of amplifying and masking the initial human inputs to form them into a way that's pleasing to the auditory senses. If you can't play well, but use something to alter the sound in some way and disclose that you're doing it, then that's perfectly fine because the goal was to entertain the audience and so long as they are entertained by your final tone and show then it doesn't matter how you got it, it's just entertainment.

T Olsen you do realize it is still possible to actually play the music WITH the backing track. You’d be surprised how many of your favorite bands use backing tracks live, it doesn’t mean they are faking it
@tolsen82124 жыл бұрын
@@DISMEMBERMENTohio Long comment but bear with me... I keep hearing "I'd be surprised how many" of my favorite bands use backing tracks live...Which of course is a line you're parroting from Lucas Mann's video. The thing is, I'm a musician- I've played on stage and I've seen thousands (literally) of bands live. I've taken a particular interest in the back stage aspects of the whole thing... I hung out with Testament during their soundcheck and discussed set up and equipment, I had a beer with Paul Di'Anno and Blaze Bayley and their roadies and discussed the same...I've been in small venues, big stadiums; I've seen old bands, new bands, every kind of music you can imagine. And none of them used backing tracks in the way Rings of Uranus do. Not one. I mean, yeah Metallica play the studio intros to Blackened and Battery because they're lazy...Slayer play the child talking during Dead Skin Mask or the backwards demons at the start of Hell Awaits...But I don't know of any bands that have bass, keys and an entire guitar track piped in for them to play over while the drummer listens to a click track and the whole mess is filtered through a board to the venue PA. That's just ridiculous for starters. What I'm trying to say is that maybe YOUR favorite bands do this shit, but mine certainly don't. And I can tell you that Unearth, Killswitch Engage, Trivium etc wouldn't be caught dead doing that shit, certainly not to that extent. The second and most important point (& to answer your question): if Lucas can play that part physically sitting down in a studio, then why would he NEED to fake it live? Well, first of all, playing to a backing track- (especially one so loud in the monitor that it's all the front row can hear)...will cover up mistakes & sloppy playing. So if he skips a note here and there or messes up a part or gets some string noise, it will blend with the backing track and not be noticed. So he can play a part live but make it sound as if it's a perfect studio take. In other words, while he's jumping around, headbanging, going slightly out of tune, sweating etc, he can make a few "mistakes" (a real unique live performance) and still sound like the recording. So even though he can physically play the part, and even though he is playing something similar live, essentially he's jamming along to something that is perfect & makes him sound way better live than he actually is. That's dishonest and cheap. It's also not a true live performance. And it proves that he's unable to sustain the level required to play like that under normal conditions. Everyone can do a hundred takes while sitting down after a can of red bull and lay down a perfect take. But nobody can maintain that perfection on stage. That's why we buy live albums- because we get a raw, stripped down and on the spot performance that has energy and a sound you won't find in the studio. (eg: compare Bruce Dickinson's "Book of Thel" on The Chemical Wedding vs the live version on Scream For Me Brazil). Here's the next point- the backing track isn't something he laid down with his guitar in studio...It's a guitar pro tab filtered through a virtual amp. So it's cleaning up his playing, making the picking super-humanly accurate and isn't even his performance. So for all intents and purposes, even though he is talented to an extent, he doesn't have the confidence to perform live without covering up mistakes and using computer tracks and software and miming to enhance his playing which he then presents as genuine (and kind of routine). It's dishonest and cheap. And it cheats other guitarists who don't use these crutches and look worse by comparison even though they're better. And it will never inspire a beginner to get into music because they will NEVER be able to achieve that level of perfection. It's very discouraging. So that is why he's undermined the talent he has by trying too hard to be something he's not. Imagine an artist who pretends they can draw freehand but secretly they're tracing photos. It doesn't matter how good the pictures are; they've misrepresented their art.

I love that you mentioned Theodore Ziras. I actually really dig his records, but when I started following him on social media, music was very rarely ever discussed. It was all about his lessons, his tabs, where you could buy his music (the latter of which I don't have a problem with as artists, even if they're "only" composers deserve to be compensated for their art when applicable) -- all of which translated to "give me your money." As this was a few years (and a couple head injuries) ago, I'm not sure if I remember the interaction as it happened (or if it was even him, or perhaps another artist peddling products via social media) but, I once asked why he didn't talk about anything but selling said products (don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with promoting yourself and what you do -- but people follow you on social media and whatnot to INTERACT with you, not just so you can potentially make money off of them) and... he blocked me.
