Editing notes: The reels were transferred by Helge Bernhardt using a Blackmagic Cintel Gen2. This eliminated most black dirt from the transfer, leaving mainly white emulsion scratches as "snow."
Phoenix digital dirt removal processes were then run on the first four minutes of Reel One by Helge Bernhardt, up to and including the opening credits. This was very effective and I hoped we would do more of this, but other projects got in the way.
The transfer, as expected, gets dirtier at the beginning and end of reels, and one or two minutes of footage was isolated around reel changes for further work, much of it done by hand in Photoshop by Garrett Gilchrist, including the removal of reel markers, splices, and heavy damage around the actual reel changes.
Hundreds of frames were cleaned by hand, with sixteen minutes of the film originally targeted for cleanup, and then the entirety of Reel One and the closing credits for a total of thirty minutes.
Automatic work was also done via PFClean. However, PFClean was unable to handle changes on "ones" (including special effects like the flickering when the Captain sings 'You're My Friend'). Phoenix would almost certainly have done a better job with this material. Garrett analyzed the automatic PFClean work frame by frame, to remove sections with faster movement where the line work would be damaged.
Garrett then did further work frame by frame in Photoshop, which took several months of by-hand restoration work, and occasionally shot stabilization in After Effects.
Reel One was considered the most problematic. We have scanned about four different prints of reel one, and all are dirty and missing some footage. While I was impressed by our "A-Print" Reel One scan, an alternate Reel One scan was also done by Helge, with thanks to someone who does not want to be credited.
While the previous scan was darker and bluer, this scan was brighter, more contrasty and more yellow, losing some highlight detail and clarity. It was also a much dirtier scan. FemBoyFilms handled Phoenix digital dirt removal processes on this version of Reel One, in full.
The cleaned-up result was good, but since this scan is considered lower quality, it is only used briefly in this edit. It's used for the 20th Century Fox logo (with heavy cleanup by Garrett Gilchrist), briefly as Marcella shakes the snowglobe, and as Marcella closes the roof of her dollhouse. It is also used for color during the live action segments in the first two minutes of the film, for richer yellow and green tones.
Sound used here is from the prints as scanned. It is possible that previous scans of this film are superior in that regard, but that's a matter of taste and hard to pin down. (That would include the retail VHS, the KA scan, the PD Rag Doll Blu Ray/35mm leak ... I forget which we used on the 2007 DVD.)
Investigations into the copyright status of this film revealed that the necessary paperwork is now lost or unavailable. A large company like Disney, which owns FOX now, or Paramount, which owns CBS now, could probably paper over those gaps to release the film. Smaller companies we've spoken to couldn't figure it out. ITT, which produced the film, was heavily associated with the US government. It was something of a scandal at the time. So some have argued that the film could be considered in the public domain, saying it would at least partially belong to the people of the US, save the various licenses (Gruelle family and Joe Raposo).
I don't know whether I would personally take the risk and argue that, but that is certainly an argument that someone could make.
Production services with thanks to Tim Finn and Jonathan Baylis.

I'm so impressed that a children's show depicted toxic relationships so well, with the taffy pit being greedy and wanting to keep Ann all to himself, and the jester pushing the trio around, saying he's doing it because he "loved" them. Edit: I forgot to mention the king as well, as he only wanted to keep the trio around to use them, in this case to inflate his ego
@imdumb2
@imdumb2 2 ай бұрын
Honestly, yea. All the side characters (besides the playroom dolls) had something. Greedy had- well, greed, camel had possible schizophrenia, Looney had what I saw as mania, gadzooks had basically depression, and the king had insecurities big enough for a king.

@@imdumb2 Honestly the camel I would say was chasing a high he'll never have to the point of almost dying trying to chase it-jumping off a cliff to find happiness. Honestly his character had the best metaphor and it actually teared me up at the end to see him finally happy and hearing Anne say "it's not just a mirage".
@ChaliceMovingXIV
@ChaliceMovingXIV 4 күн бұрын
@CurtyTails each character is chasing something they will never have. Camel is looking for "Home", greedy is looking for "a sweetheart" king is looking for "the last laugh". What they all are seeking, Ann already has. Her song "what I see" shows that she sees happiness in the world and that she sees the same thing in herself. The camel is the protagonist of the film because he actualizes that within himself.

Okay but Ann and Andy are such a great sibling duo, like Ann is the sweetest thing ever and her voice is so adorable and so smoothing, also she's just so humble and caring. Andy is such a professional hater, but while he's hotheaded and sassy, he's still a great guy, like even if at first Andy was calling the Camel crazy, he still felt sympathy for him and offered to be his friend. Apparently it's because of the director, Richard Williams who was an animator that had outrageously demanding expectations for his time, insisting to following the old 1920s standard of 24 frames per second that by the 70s had been dropped to 12 animation frames per second to cut costs. He upheld this same standard for his own personal animated film "the thief and cobbler" which took 30 YEARS to produce. it's a fascinating and heartbreaking story of it's own.

@@phoenixlich The Thief and the Cobbler never even finished production, sadly. Richard kept missing deadlines on the project, and it became such a money-dump with no returns that his vision never saw the light of day, as he was forcefully removed from the project and finished production under the leadership of Warner Bros executives and then butchered even further by Disney. The closest version to the original vision we'll ever see is the recobbled edition, made available in full right here on KZbin - by this very channel, nonetheless!

This is the original Toy Story (unless there's an earlier one I don't know about). It's so nice to look at and I love how they credit the animators in the beginning. They did an amazing job. I think the movie may have been forgotten because of those 2 identical dolls. They're just creepy looking and annoying to me. If those needles segments were cut out, I think the movie would benefit from it because the racial issue would be gone and the flow would just be better. It was just a different time I guess. I don't have any proof of this, it's just a guess. I see it a lot of older media I've watched. Some stuff just ages poorly

I loved this movie as a kid. I loved how weird it was, and the freedom of expression the film portrayed totally opened my limited world at the time; I was a young kid living with an abusive parent and this movie brought me an escape. I find it hilarious that people in the seventies, when this film was made, didn’t appreciate it at all, in fact, it had been stated that this film disturbed children. Lol
@solen77

I did not grow up with this but I enjoyed watching the movie. And why some children found it disturbing was probably because of all the crazy in the movie. Although the children should have not been creeped out about it, heck didnt they have those disney movies and all?

It got more play in the early 80s, when the Disney Channel first appeared on cable. It was in constant rotation, shown multiple times a week. This gave it enough lift I remember it was shown as a primetime movie on one of the big three networks. 28:52 Lyrics for “Candy Hearts and Paper Flowers” because no one else wrote them 🎶: Times when you’re real down and low Every lonely place I go There’s a way I always know We’re always together Paper daises to explain Sunshine always follows rain And a heart that’s sweet and true Will help us weather the weather That’s what keeps us together Candy hearts and paper flowers Sunshine days and skies of blue Rhymes and songs we sing for hours Words to say “I love you true” Times get bad and then I worry How I’ll ever see it through But candy hearts and paper flowers Will always keep me close to you Will always keep me close to you If the night is gloomy and I’d like to hide Or a chill goes through me cus I’m scared inside That’s when I remember all the things you’ve done Little things that warm me like a morning sun And I feel so happy, don’t you see? Cus I start to thinking just how much you mean to me So let the night get gloomy any place I go I got you beside me, that’s a fact you should know It’s because I love you so If the night is gloomy and I’d like to hide (Candy hearts and paper flowers) Or a chill goes through me cus I’m scared inside (Sunshine days and skies of blue) That’s when I remember all the things you’ve done (Rhymes and songs we sing for hours) Little things that warm me like a morning sun (Words to say “I love you true”) And I feel so happy, don’t you see? (Times get bad but I don’t worry) Cus I start to thinking just how much you mean to me (Cus I know you’ll see me through) So let the night get gloomy any place I go (And candy hearts and paper flowers) I got you beside me, that’s a fact you should know (Will always keep me close to you) It’s because I love you so Candy hearts and paper flowers will always keep me close to you

What's surprising about this, people are still watching this, I'm highly impressed about how Raggedy Ann and Andy haven't died yet, and with all the refrences in TADC, this will honestly never die. And it seems it won't die until a long time. Also, I like my own comments, if you have a problem with that, fight me.

The movie was so sweet and gentle. The songs were so catchy and I seem to can't stop repeating them! When I first watched this, it reminded me of Toy story, just a bit older. And the thing they both share is they both pretty much have the same plot. Just ones about dolls and the other is about action figures and gadgets. I really enjoyed the movie alot! The quality is a little good for a movie from the 70's and for a platform that was from years later. And the thing that surprised me was that the 2 movies both have a new toy arrriving. Like ones a super cool buzz lightyear and the other is a french doll which is babette. The rest of the movie was very enjoyable. I don't think anybody relizes this but i just relized that yk theres a raggedy andy? Well do you know woody's owners name? Ya, andy! 2 andy's!

I heard the descendants of Johnny Gruelle (Raggedy Ann's creator) approved of the film even if Richard Williams didn’t think to highly of the project

It’s amazing that even though he didn’t necessarily think this movie anything special, he and the animators still put heart and soul into directing it. Clearly with the massive cult following it has garnered it was a good call. Animation doesn’t necessarily have to tell a story that’s any good, it just has to make that story LOOK as good as possible.

than from 1983 till 1999 richard williams made the animation with live action in the opening title theme song of reading rainbow.

2 years ago, in late october of 2022, i was sitting in my room one evening a few days before halloween, watching youtube. Then i missclicked on this exact video. At first, i thought i had clicked on some sort of 1 minute clip, but then i looked at the time and the title. I had nothing better to do, and thought "hey! If it's an animated movie about that one haunted doll, why not watch it?" (Cause that's where i knew Ann from originally lol) ... At the end of it, when the credits rolled, it felt like i had stumbled upon something i should've seen much MUCH earlier in my life, but never did. The characters, the music, the story, the animation, it all felt so...nostalgic? In a way. It was all so charming, so naturally, i searched up the movie on tiktok and found that yes, there was indeed a small fandom dedicated to it! Almost a year later, october 13th 2023, (which was on a friday hilariously enough-) the pilot episode for The Amazing Digital Circus dropped. One character stood out to me, Ragatha, she looked just like Raggedy Ann. At that point, i had almost forgotten about the movie so her whole character brought back that memory. Recently, the 2nd episode got uploaded, Candy Carrier Chaos. The inspiration that episode took from this movie's "Greedy" was really fun to see- and again, brought back that very memory from october 2022. So that's why i'm here now, to rewatch this movie again. I know i can't experience it the same way i did that evening 2 years ago, but dammit, it's still such a wonderful movie. I'm so glad i found it when i did, and thanks for reading my story
