I agree when we are watching at our leisure in the comfort of our home to relax the flawed logic really stands out, but for a victim it is a very different scenario, they could be distracted, unwell, stressed, or suffering from dementia, a lot of people at home at those hours of the day are not working, and may be retired, and not computer savvy. They are subjected to an agitated man on the phone trying to refund them, and the whole script is designed to skew reality, and socially engineer the victim into completing the task. Almost every person if told they have made a mistake would want to rectify it. If you are being stressed on the phone and suddenly see a huge amount paid into your account, purportedly from a reputable company, you'd want to put it right. At this point, they are hooked, they feel they have a 'friendly' relationship with the person on the phone who is worrying about losing his job. They want to make it right for him. Some of the people are lonely and have almost enjoyed engaging with the young man on the phone who has told them about his small children and wife, or girlfriend. A little human contact, which is often lacking. I have seen people in stores buying large amounts of gift cards, and I have told them about scams, and they have blurted out a crazy reason why they suddenly need every giftcard in the store whilst clutching a phone with someone in their ear. It's more common than people let you know. They are embarrassed when the truth comes out, and a lot of people just never tell anyone.
