Sir Mannelig Early one morning before the sun did rise And the birds sang their sweet song The mountain troll proposed to the fair squire She had a false deceitful tongue Sir Mannelig, Sir Mannelig won't you marry me For all that I'll gladly give you You may answer only yes or no Will you do so or no To you I will give the twelve great steeds That graze in a shady grove Never has a saddle been mounted on their backs Nor had a bit in their mouths To you I will give the twelve fine mills That stand between Tillo and Terno The mill stones are made of the reddest brass And the wheels are silver-laden To you I will give the gilded sword That jingles from fifteen gold rings And strike with it in battle as you will On the battlefield you will conquer To you I will give a brand new shirt The lustrous best for to wear It is not sewn with needle or thread But crocheted of the whitest silk Gifts such as these I would gladly receive If you were a Christian woman But I know you are the worst mountain troll From the spawn of Necken and the devil The mountain troll ran out the door She wailed and she shrieked so loudly "Had I gotten that handsome squire From my torment I would be free now" Sir Mannelig, Sir Mannelig won't you marry me For all that I'll gladly give you You may answer only yes or no Will you do so or no In case anyone was interested in the lyrics.

Sir Mannelig is actually a bad translation in the sense that it is not a translation at all. Mannelig is a word with a distinct linguistic meaning. It is not a name. In the Nordic languages, mannelig simply means something or anything that has to do with males. It can be understood as manly, but I am not sure that covers it.

Dovenpeis Mannelig was actually a pretty common name in the early 12-13th century here in Sweden. It is true that it also means manly etc but it was also a name. Sweden had many names that also meant things back then and even as recently as the 1800's. Names like Fagerlid, Starkerman, Rikeman etc. All names that is also words. Herr Mannelig is most certainly a name. Herr = Sir followed by Mannelig with a capital M is a name. No doubt.

Hey thanks, man. It's really difficult hearing about how badly native Americans were treated in the early days of the country and a tragedy how much of their culture was lost. Basically the same stuff the Romans did to Western Europeans a thousand years earlier. Hold on to what you have left and we'll try and hold on to what we have left. Hopefully our descendants will keep it alive after us and humanity will keep all it's unique cultures through the ages. The alternative would be so boring.

There has been some acoustic songs here and there on the albums and some singles, but last year she dropped a complete album, Folkesange, with just music like this. In my own humble opinion, I haven't found any music in this nordic style that tops that record. Maybe Osi And The Jupiter has some stuff that could come close but, man, Myrkur is just another level, the ambient feeling is just completely captured, I live in western almost northern part of sweden (depends on who you ask), and when you drive around or hike through fjords, Myrkur just completly sets and capture that tone!

Well, comments are real fun, but why call it "racism" and condemn people for being proud of their ancestral land? If you play in a Football team, dont you say your team is better than others? Im german, trust me I know what im talking about :D "Racist" is the most famous word in germany, most commonly used by turkish (who arent racist at all, if you take their hate against kurdish people aside :D). And yeah, i know we had Hitler hm hm, well this freaking guy combined a celtic sunwheel with a roman flag to create his own emblem, wich is disastrous for a true celt. But appart from this im proud of my ancestors, and everyone in the world should keep his ancestors in memory! If you call that racism, youre simply a fool without idendity ;)

Racially Fluid Cis Male good point. But who's to say that the documentary that you mentioned isn't fabricated to paint Hitler in a different light? It works both ways. It's easy to accept a lie when it fits with what you want to believe. I'm not necessarily saying that the documentary is a lie, but it very well could be...just like most of written history.

@@BudgetGainsByJJ do you remeber the Swedish Rus vikings that (Rus)sia gets its name from? It was after 840 that Scandanavian Vikings-who were known in Eastern Europe as “Varangians” or “Rus”-established Viking rule over Slavic tribes in what came to be called Kievan Rus. Its so funny to see putin claiming Ukraine while some Swedish vikings first laid the foundation to both Ukraine and Russia. You say that the slavs where stronger. I have Germanic blood thanks to my grandmother on my mother's side. Though she was the only one who was Germanic in the family I feel extremely sad to see what Germanic countries have become. I know this is a Christian song, but it's still a part of Sweden's heritage. And soon, if the Swedes or any other Germanic nation do not stand up for their rights nothing of the North shall remain. I am not particularly fond of violence, but if the land is in danger so is the people. Please fight!

To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: A time to be born, a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted; A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; A time to love, and a time to hate; A time of war, and a time of peace. Conquered by none but ONE. Our Lord Christ and the Light of Love. Great Vikings, Great Normans, Fearless Scots, Great Warriors... Now we battle against an enemy unseen. To battle.
