My only possible criticism would be the screws appear (from the colour but I could be wrong depending on the camera/lighting etc) to be Zinc coated, I would definitely have gone with stainless.

Using a knife to mark for the dado is fine but for speed and repeatability I'd recommend you consider using a kerf maker. Glad to see you getting commissions. Keep going.

Very nice work, just a few suggestions. 1) A slight cove cut in the bottom of each plank will prevent water from migrating across the back. This is commonly done on marine wood treads. 2) Instead of screws you could have just used brads. The strength of the screws really isn't needed in this application.

Nice board, but i recommend using wood filler to cover the screws, not only for visual look, but also to prevent elektrolyse between the screws when these comes in contact with fluids. This elektrolyse will also react to the zinc coating of the screws,and will dissolves the zinc coating, and the screws will rust and discolor the wood.

Just had an idea. I always have the same issue never having something the right size to soak stuff in. I think a scrap plywood frame, just screwed together, and a sheet of plastic. Once jobs done, dismantle back to scrap heap for next time.

Beech is great wood although quite hard, so you should use a carbide or stronger blade on your saws, otherwise you'll leave burn marks on the wood and also may damage your blades and saws.

Cool. :) The only way I'd like better is if you'd added pegs to hide the screws. But it's not necessary. Very pretty.

If you play with the mineral oil again, do the pour in a plastic tub. Something to help hold it all in. Makes for an easier clean up too.

It's better to use a flat kerf blade to make dadoes, rather than a normal general purpose blade. The blade you are using leaves a 'v' shape at the top of the kerf, meaning the dado joint will have gaps at the bottom from the wood not removed by the blade.

Looks awesome! Just wondering how you can make this project profitable? You mentioned that it took 6 hrs(approx) plus materials. You must be looking at, at very least £40/hr (maybe £50)for labour plus that beautiful piece of seasoned wood you employed in the construction! Beautiful , top quality,bespoke piece of work without question. I just wonder how much you need to charge for that item to also have a reasonable profit margin on it? I’m just speculating, NOT asking about your pricing. How can ANYONE make building a draining board seem interesting? You just did. Loved the upload.
@RagnBoneBrown
@RagnBoneBrown 6 жыл бұрын
Great question! My hourly rate is actually a bit less than you suggested, and for the piece of beech I estimated a price of around £30 which was built in to the cost to the client. But still, I actually made a loss on this one, but it was a project I was interested in doing for the purposes of making the video - and I’ll make some money from the ad revenue of the video so it’s not all bad. But for the average woodworker with high overheads and no KZbin channel outlet - you’re absolutely right, it’s be very difficult to price this and make a profit because most people aren’t prepared to pay what it costs in the real world...

Would it have been faster and easier to use a router for those dados? E.g. by lining them all up, clamping a straight edge, and making a few passes with a wide bit? I'm thinking of getting a router since I always make a mess of things when I make dados with my little table saw
