Hello, Beverly! Several things lend themselves to the threads you can experience when you are creating your rugs. The type of fabric used (cotton vs. cotton/poly), the method you use to prepare the strips (tear, cut using shears, rotary cutter/mat, or commercial cutter), & if the fabric is straightcut or bias-cut. Bias cut fabric has very few if ANY threads! Hope that helps!!

@@lindaqualls8395 Thanks for the information! You are crocheting at a 3/4" gauge. I got that by taking your 12 rounds x 2 = 24. 18 divided by 24 = .75. There's absolutely nothing wrong with your stitch gauge. There is no right or wrong! It simply means you may need to add a few more rounds to get to your desired size! Being dyslexic, I've always struggled with learning the traditional way. Washing recommendations: We suggest hand-washing ( a bathtub works GREAT!), and laying flat to dry. Scotchguard is an amazing product that helps condition & protect the fiber in our rugs. You can find it at most stores & is relatively inexpensive! Once your rug is dry spray both front & back! Made my first rag rug ever today following this video. Made some sheet yarn for the first time as well. Length turned out perfectly 34” but width was 17”. I am pretty sure that my first several rows were too tight. Also my sheet yarn was cut horribly uneven. Since the rug was literally free unless you count the few dollars I spent on the Q hook I’m choosing to love it despite its imperfections. It’s my first, it’s cute, and I love it. I have found that if I use a different color marker at the end (# marked in red), than when I crochet if I see the colored marker than I know I forgot to remove it before I started my pattern. It helps me, hope it helps

Hello, Fay! Happy Saturday! The only thing I can think of is that possibly you are adding 3 stitches at the end of your foundation stitches BEFORE turning? Could this be the case? That could cause your rug to buckle. Step one: foundation stitches (chains), then turn and work those stitches with single crochet stitches and THEN add 2 additional single crochet stitches in that last stitch. Step two: turn and work the stitches, again repeating the 3 stitches on the last stitch. I wish there were a way I could watch you work the first round?

The way I figured this out was to take the rug width = 20" divided by the rounds completed x 2. 20/24 = .83 No doubt your rug is beautiful! "One single crochet around" will be on the final round of your rug AND/OR the round prior to converting to "Crochet on Demand" technique for our larger rugs. Hello, Cindy! That's correct! :) When your rug begins to "cup" or "buckle", an additional stitch or two is necessary in the corners - never on the sides or end after the 12th round. When crocheting in the corners, if it feels too far a reach without buckling your rug, you need to add a stitch to relieve tension. Keeping in mind, that adding TOO many additional stitches will cause your rug to waffle. We call it "Crocheting on Demand": The rule of thumb (after the 12th round) is: 1, 2 or none. One additional stitch in each corner, Two additional stitches in each corner, or No additional stitches. And remember of course, that what you do in one corner, you need to repeat in the other 3. Being attentive to tension concerns as your crochet is important. If the stitch is falling toward your hook, you have a tension concern. Your stitches should always be straight up & down.

Good Morning! First of all, thanks for watching! Second, I'm sorry for your frustrations. :/ Please don't be discouraged!!! The pattern itself is a no-fail way to make our rugs (crocheted OR twine-woven). Two things factor into the SIZE of your rug. The crochet hook SIZE you use & your personal stitch gauge are BIG factors. Assuming you are using a "Q" size hook, the latter is the reason your rug is smaller than you had hoped. You've done absolutely nothing wrong; your stitch gauge is likely different than the 1" gauge I used in the video. Could you share with me the size of your rug at the completion of round 10 - BOTH width & length, the number of foundational chains you started with, & the size you hoped to make.I can then determine your stitch gauge and share with you how many rows you will yet need to complete to arrive at that size!

I am using a size Q hook. My rug measures 12.5 X 16” at the beginning of rnd 10 . When you are holding your rug up I see yours has holes where mine does not. It is difficult to see just where you are putting your hook to make your sc. Hmmm ... did you complete Round 10 (both sides of your rug)? You say at the "beginning" of Round 10 - so I'm not sure if you just completed Round 9 and STARTING Round 10, halfway thru Round 10, or completed Round 10. Also, how many foundational chains did you begin with?

Me again! Without knowing more information, I'm going to assume that you finished round 10. You are crocheting fairly tightly .. at an approximate 5/8" (.63) gauge as opposed to a 1" gauge I use for my pattern. Absolutely nothing wrong with that! Some crochet tightly; some crochet looser. As a tighter crocheter, you will always need to crochet more rounds. I arrived at your gauge by by taking your Width / (Rnds x 2). 12.5 divided by 20 = .63. Here's the answer to your original question you were looking for! Hello, Gale! Flannel is WONDERFUL in our rugs!! There are 2 types of flannel: print flannel & yarn dyed flannel. Print flannel is printed on one side only & the back is a solid color (often white) It is thicker so we recommend cutting it narrower - possibly 1 1/2". Minimal threading. Yarn-dyed flannel is woven and looks much like homespun fabrics. Each thread is dyed separately - both sides will be the same. Cut this fabric 1 1/2 - 2" width normally. Some threading should be expected. Fleece is another wonderful fabric for our rugs! But a word of caution with fleece. There will be a lot of stretch so we recommend practicing your tension if a beginner before using fleece as tension could be a concern for you! Hope that helps!

Hello!! Thank you for reaching out! There are 2 sides to the foundation chains. First establish the number of chains by subtracting the finished width from the finished length of your rug. Chain that many. Turn and begin working ONE SIDE of those foundation stitches with single crochet stitches (just one piece of the chain) until you reach the end. Add 2 additional single crochet stitches in that last chain to make the turn & reduce tension. Turn your work again and begin working the OTHER side of the foundation chains & the remaining piece of fabric, with single crochet stitches. Hope that helps?!

Hello, Lisa! So happy you reached out! First of all you are doing nothing wrong!! Tension is definitely the one thing most beginners stress over. You're not alone! When I teach classes I can almost read peoples personalities by the way they crochet. Some perfectionists (like myself) or "Type A" personalities many times will crochet VERY tight, whereas "Type B" personalities (easy-going, relaxed) often crochet VERY loose in the beginnings of learning. I'm guessing you and I are like personalities? You might practice with an old worn out bed sheet. Connect your strips & roll into a big ball so you don't have to stop. Now just focus on the stitches. As you make a stitch look at the space directly below the hook. You should be able to insert the tip of your pinky finger in that space. (Just the tip not the whole finger). If not, open the stitch a bit & continue on. You should never have to PULL on the fabric to complete a stitch. It should just glide through with ease. It won't be long before your stitches are looser & consistent tension. Just a little practice & you'll be there! PROMISE! Just don't give up okay? Hope you'll stay in touch!!

Hi Lora Love your videos!! This is my first rug i am making. I may have used a smaller hook and not as wide fabric. so mine is approx. 14 x 20 inch. if i want to add a few more rows to make it a bit bigger, where would i make the increase or which row should i be repeating. nice time i will make my chain longer. this one is a practice rug! thanks

Thank you SO much!! Great questions! The first step before starting ANY rug is decide the size! Using a "Q" crochet hook will yield approximately a 1" gauge depending on your person stitch gauge. As a beginner practice to keep your stitches nice and open! NEXT, once you've decided your rug size, subtract your finished width dimension from your finished length dimension. As an example, is you would like your rug to be 20 x 38" - you will subtract 20 from 38. Start with 18 foundational chains. Another example: you would like your finished rug to be 15 x 45". Subtract 15 from 45. Start with 30 foundational chains. And THEN follow the pattern on the cheat sheet! Thanks for asking! The "Cheat Sheet" is an abbreviated version of a written pattern. A unique approach to creating rugs! You can carry in your purse or pocket & always have it handy. The pattern works for ANY size oval rug - small vanity rugs, hall runners or large room-sized rugs. The only thing different in the sizes is the beginning foundational chains. They are what will dictate the overall size of your rug. From there, you simply follow the pattern on the cheat sheet! And ... your rug will always be perfectly shaped & lay perfectly flat!

Hello, Jeanne! I AM! I would say 90% of the rugs I make are using 2" wide fabric strips. Occasionally, if the fabric is very lightweight, I'll cut the strips 2 1/2 - 3". Or, if it's heavier fabric like denim or corduroy - I'll cut it 1 1/2" If the fabric is print and the backside a considerably lighter color, I will fold as I go or use my trusty bias tape maker - fold & press method! (Works awesome!) However, if the fabric is a solid or a print where both sides are the same (like our batiks) - no folding is necessary!

Hello, Austin! Yes! Although I will say that 2" wide strips is pretty standard for me. Occasionally, dependent on the WEIGHT of the fabric, I have cut the strips to 1 1/2" (heavier weight fabrics) or wider (2 1/2 - 3") (lighter weight fabrics). I normally use one of 3 different sizes of hooks, "Q" for my rugs, "P" for placemats & "L" for small craft projects like ornaments! Thanks for asking!!

Hello, Joni! So happy you reached out! To end your rug, insert your needle in the BACK loop of the next stitch. (I generally end mine rugs in a corner) Then using you needle weave the tail through a few stitches on the back side of your rug being certain to do this in two directions to help secure the fabric! Pretty easy! As to the scallop! Yes I DO add scallops to my toothbrush rugs but I use crochet to do it. I'll add a link to my video on adding a scallop! Let me know if this works for you, okay?
