Ragtime Tutorial 1/3 | The Straight & Swing Feels

Often, people think ragtime is played straight but it's often swung, as Scott Joplin himself would do. You must get this rhythm/pulse down first and then do the technical exercise I provide before moving on to Part 2 or even hoping to play any ragtime repertoire or improvisation. Good luck!

Thank you Dan for the Part 1 of “Ragtime basic pattern and rhythm” video lesson. For whatever reasons I have difficulties to learn playing “syncopation”. I followed your method and engraved the pattern in my brain. I divide 4 crotchets (quarter notes) into 8 quavers (eighth notes) at bass clef and see where each note at treble clef lands at which quaver note. I finally get it. Much appreciated, Dan, as always. Will view the Part 2 soon. 👍👍🙏

im pretty sure the literal explanation to what you couldnt put into words (the swing part) is that each beat is divided into three parts, on which you play, instead of even division

Coming over from having learned boogie woogie piano first (kevanaugh and such) I found it difficult to not syncopate ragtime at first!!

Nope. You would do better to internalise them mentally than be distracted by reading. I’ve never (or extremely rarely) written anything down that I’ve taught on the channel or on my own journey. You’ll find it helps to be free from papers and trust your mind more 🙋‍♂️
