Thank you for making me feel better about not getting the acrylic tiles! I've been kicking myself a bit for not getting them after watching unboxing videos where they seem SO much more deluxe, but as someone who will be playing Castles for the first time, I think having the description right on the tile will be especially important for me!

yup, you didn't make a bad choice at all. everyone who keeps saying "you don't need the text tiles, you'll never use the text tiles" has never actually played with the text on the tiles. i've played both ways, and there's no competition the player aid is very well done, but it is still hugely inferior having to cross reference a separate game piece to keep up with what's what, rather than simply looking at the game and understanding how *everything* works :)

Having played burgundy 50+ times, you absolutely still need the text. I may just sell my acrylic files for that single reason.

@@phoenixhazard at some point you should just be able to memorize the tiles. There aren't that many, but the text is very helpful for new players.

Good job - I did pretty much exactly the same thing down to tossing one of the inserts and putting the neoprene board in the top ... I can't see myself ever using the acrylic hexes. The cardboard pieces are perfect. This solution is so good for breaking out and getting playing quickly.

Indeed a superior way .. thanks ! I did one small thing different.. you can put the small tray in the box, so you dont need that many zip bags but leave the components in the small tray. it fits perfectly if you put the small tray aligned with the map

Thanks for this, looking forward to fitting the playmat in the box! I do differ on the text issue though, i feel like putting all the tiles text up would make it difficult to quickly scan the options. Once youve played more than 3 times i dont think youd ever need the text anyway. I do wish they added it though just so its an option.

We got the 3d tiles - we are so happy we did :D I'm good with looking at the reference card, it's not that difficult.

I ditched all the inserts except the one that holds the castle minis. put everything else on top of the player boards and still had heaps of room for other things. Baggies are just the way to go to actually play and put away the game.

I’d love to see an after market 3D printed or wooden insert that organizes the game in a great way that makes set up and clean up easier and let’s us fit the mat! I like that you fit that in there! I wish more games had boxes that could fit that

After some attempts, I begrudgingly settled on this method and I think it will work fine. I’d prefer to use the whole insert but I did get the neoprene mat and it didn’t come with any way to store it, and since I plan on using it, this is probably the best way. (I also have all the acrylic upgrades in the box!)

You can actually fit It with acrylic and the rolled mat quite easily in the box. Remove the L shaped + little token box trays, put all the acrylic tokens in their coloured bags. Red/white tokens etc in the bottom vineyward expansion tray and/or a plastic bag (same with dice). You can also decide what you put in the bottom vineyard tray, vineyard bag + tiles in It fits, but very snug. Can also put smaller bags there and the vineyard bag on top. Keep the small acrylic tiles expansion box, put that one on the top of the player boards in the corner (so, top layer of the box), the mat diagonally and wrap the bags in the spaces left. It fits, without lift, can stored in any orientation and also super quick to setup. Alternatively, you could keep the L + small token tray instead of the vineyard tray. Then you have all your acrylic tokens sorted in their inserts neatly, ready to play. Everything still fits, but you have like 5 ~ 10mm lift, because that tray is a bit higher.

The Board Game Garden has the boxing 95% perfect. I made a couple adjustments vs. how she did it and got everything in the box with the inserts. The neoprene mat is separate which is how I prefer it as I put mats in neoprene mat tubes. 3D Terrain stays in its own box. No disrespect but this is much too messy for my liking.

imo, game trays are _significantly_ inferior to baggies as a tool for setting up, putting away, and storing your games :)

@@rahdo to each his own, for me aesthetics are more important factor than rapid set up when playing a game after awhile. I use ziplock baggies when there is no other options like for Zombicide tiles, but throwing or storing away trays ala Tom Vasel is far from desired or ideal for me at least. I loved the storage solutions of Viticulture World crate edition and the Big box for Western Legends and I disliked Everdell Big box that mixed all the expansions and expected to get rid of boxes with beautiful art. An important factor for me when reopening a game is that I want to see it presented as a pristine played once game not as a functional bunch of Ziplock baggies full of stuff, particularity when I do not play the game often enough to remember what each tile is for or if it belongs to the main game or an expansion.

the thing about aesthetics is that i'm not looking inside the box while playing, which is where the empty baggies are. the box isn't even on the table. and by the same token, i'm not looking inside the box when it's closed on my shelf. but as you say, everyone's got their own boat to float! :)

I don't think I would like to have the text side up because it might be hard to read each one. I'm familiar enough with the game and the player aids are so well done that it would probably be easier to look at that. Plus, I think it looks a bit better to have the art side facing up. Also, I only got the classic pledge and added on the acrylic hexes. That is the only fancy thing I got beyond the base set, so I will probably want to use those. I don't have the playmat, so don't have to worry about that fitting in the box.

my 50+ year old eyes have no problem reading the tiles from a distance, even in the darker than normal atmosphere of my filing room. but yeah, those acrylic tiles are super nice so i'm sure you won't regret getting them :)

There should be more re-boxing videos. For the most part, it's not a problem, but there are certain games where re-boxing the game is quite a challenge. I follow a similar approach and prefer baggies over having to separate out the tiles again. We have bags! Just use the goddarn bags to hold stuff. I don't know why publishers make these inserts that are for neat freaks but increase setup and teardown time. I have the 3D tiles so I'll probably do the cardboard + 3D combo and skip the acrylic tiles altogether. This way you know which powers you have and what the tiles do and it looks super neat. AT least that's my hope.

Do you see yourself using the vineyard expansion regularly when you play?

not necessarily. i'd probably use it 50% of the time. it doens't increase the playtime due to mechanisms, but it does make the game take longer anyway because decisions are tougher with more options to weigh

if they're nice, definitely. like super thin plastic transparent stickers would be fantastic. my worry is that regular stickers would reduce the tactile loveliness of the tiles a bit, and really, the only reason to have the acrylics is because they feel nicer :)

I could not play with the cardboard tiles facedown with that tiny text. That is MUCH harder for me to read from a distance than a picture. I have zero problem using the player handout haha I also love the acrylic tiles + hexes, it just feeeeels so much better to me

I assume you meant played face up? My eyes are bad enough that I occasionally have to wear glasses while gaming, and imo the text is much easier to read than the tiny icons on the monasteries and the town buildings all look similar too. So the text is significantly better for smooth play imo :)

I got the acrylic tiles and I used this method. I put the extra tiles that don't go in bags on the bottom. The dutchy tray. Then I flipped the lid of the double tray to put the neomat and the bags filled with the acrylic tiles. I put all the board tiles in the acrylic hexes box and the board is outside the box as well. No lid lift for me and the tiles all fit. Thanks R. I hope someone makes stickers for the acrylic tiles.

Rahdo I agree, far superioir to just toss the top layer and get the playmat in and through everything in baggies! I'll DIY the text on the back of the acrylics though :)

nope, my acrylic tiles are long gone (though i do sort of regret that since they later released official stickers) and everything is still stuck in just like i showed!

I'll be doing the same but with the acrylics, wondering if the spaces at the bottom for the acrylic double hexes were used for them that would get rid of the lid lift 🤔 guess ill have to find out when i try my reboxing (when i finally get the game). Its disappointing the insert wasn't better designed really, seems they tried to please both acrylic and cardboard and missed the mark completely for both lol.

I’ll never use the tile with the text on them. I don’t want other players to see me lift tiles and see what I might be going for. You can use them as a bluff, but… if you’re not going to use them as a bluff then I’d imagine that the game would go quicker reading the player add while it’s not your turn. Then waiting till it’s your turn to start flipping tiles to read them.

why would you do that? you just put the tiles text side up on the main board (as i showed in this video and also demonstrated in my vinyards and solo runthroughs), so you and everyone else can easily, at a glace know what *everything* does, and once you take them onto your board you can switch them ththe art side :)

@@mikeputrino1203 that is a classic form over function debate, and there's no wrong answer. myself, i'll ALWAYS take function over form, especially in this case since when the tiles are farther away from my old eyes, the monasteries all tend to look the same anyway, and it's MUCH easier to make out the text than the icons :)

I think a lot of people will be upset about that. I was initially. But honestly, I think it’s better to use the player aid anyways. Would be super annoying having 3 or 4 people grabbing every tile and flipping them over while you are trying to see what you need etc. the player aid will reference everything faster in my opinion.

yeah, i did try to tell everyone in my video about the last of text in the acrylic a year ago, but you're right, it's a shame things weren't more clear to everyone re: usability, you don't need to grab at them. you simply put them on the board text side up (like you can see how i played in my 2 runthroughs). once you get your copy, give it a try! (although maybe don't, since you wouldn't want to come to regret your acrylics, which again, are lovely) :)

@@rahdo oh that’s a great idea. But I like having the artwork showing lol. But for new people that could be really good. For me, I really wanted the text in the monestary tiles so if I use the 3D terrain pack, the yellow ones I could just leave face up on that side board they provide. But oh well.

the art is quite nice looking, but when it's on the central table it's not that readable anyway (at least not for my 50+ year old eyes). so the art has the maximum impact when it gets on my board and it's close! also, their chose a very nice serif font for the text that has a classic feel that fits in with the board i think, while still being very readable from a distance :)

While I do agree the text tiles make game play smoother. However, the Acrylic Tiles and 3D Castles take CoB the next elevated next... making the Special Edition a complete Family Heirloom, to be handed down generation after generation. With this said, the Player Reference Aids are a minor inconvenience at best. The large insert tray that Rahdo removes, is not overly functional for either the Acrylic Cardboard Tiles. Sadly, the Acrylic Tiles come in perfectly suitable trays with snap-on lids, but they won't fit into the game box. Even if you remove the large component tray, the Acrylic Tile Trays simply will not fit. In general, the biggest disappointment, is the fact the large component tray does NOT have snap-on lid like all other inserts trays.

I packed up my ACRYLIC tiles in the box all together in original insert with everything besides the cloth which is small and you just take it with the box to friends... Second of all you are talking so much about how long it takes to check the meaning of each yellow hex while in the same time showing me its soooo quick to take goods out of your genius plastic bag? In the original insert I just pick it up from there and only count 5 of each pile lol.... people those days have tendency to watch some illusional grandpa's :) I don't get it fr
